Smoke began to filter in from the the hallway. It was thick and dark. The facet went on again, this time at full power. The kerig started on it's own.
Maia put a cup in to prevent the water from ruining the coffee maker. She started closing each of the cabinets.

"s**t. Shitshitshitshit." Toby rushed from the kitchen to check the hall. He choked on the acrid smell of smoke and tried to find the source. Was the kid actually strong enough to light things on fire?!
Dari closed his eyes hard as if it would make it all go away.

There was no obvious source for the smoke, but it kept coming. It filtered into the living room and into the kitchen. Maia followed Toby into the hallway. She coughed and held a hand over her mouth and nose. It definitely smelled real... Could this be an illusion?
"They're not being funny anymore," Alex complained, looking to Michael. "Can you do really scary stuff?"

Well he could set a fire, but he didn't particularly feel like traumatizing any children or ruining any families' lives today.
Toby had his shirt up over his nose. Michael disappeared from beside Alexander and appeared in the hallway, a juddering, blackened image, smoking, smelling of sulfur, skin indeterminable from clothing, head tilted, jerking, skipping frames of ********." Toby thumped against the wall and slid down it. Hm. The smoke wasn't any thinner down here. Definitely an illusion. He stood and skidded back into the dining room. "Get outside!"
So, child or child-looking demon? He ushered Maia outside and Dari followed.
When the door closed, Michael reappeared as himself, chuckling deeply.

Maia leaned against the house and slid down into a sitting position. She was definitely shaken, shuddering. "...Can we not go back in?" she asked. But they had a job to do. They had to help that child find peace.
Alexander took Michael's hand. "I think we scared them really well," he said, and smiled up at him. "Do you think they'll come back soon so we can scare them again?"

Toby was short of breath. "I'm not sure what the ******** that just was? We'll have to ask Michael." He did not address going back inside.
Dari, however, was just happy to not look like he was on fire any more.
Michael smiled and took Alexander's hand. "Mm-hm. I think we did," he said with a laugh, "I don't think they'll be back all too soon, though."
The microwave in the kitchen finally went off, and for some reason Michael found it funny. So much for a seance.

"I like them not being back too soon," Alex admitted. "You should stay here. You're like me. I've never met anyone like me before. We can scare anyone we like!" He smiled happily. "Should we go see what they're doing?" he asked.
Maia scooted closer to Toby and wrapped an arm around him. "Do you think it's a demon?" she asked quietly.

"I have no idea. A demon could take on the guise of an actual dead child, and it definitely smelled like sulfur, not burning flesh. On the other hand, it didn't actually hurt anyone," Toby said, "I saw it. In the hallway. I don't know if it was Michael or the kid but... I saw it." Sort of. He'd seen something. They could go over the footage when they got back inside. After things had calmed down. Toby's hands were shaking.
Michael just smiled. No, God or whoever had better plans for this boy than to keep him earth-ridden for the rest of eternity.
"We're a rare sort," he said, "We don't usually cross paths."

Maia took Toby's hand and massaged it with her thumb. She was shaken and pale, but she hadn't seen whatever Toby had. Whatever it was, it had to have been bad. Something small wouldn't leave her fiancee like this.
Alex peered outside, appearing to the three. "Hey you guys! Come back in. I was having fun!"

Michael laughed when the boy teleported and opened the door behind Toby. He was solid, what with the open view of the street. "I'm sorry, you three."
Toby stood. "That was you?"
Michael nodded.
Toby reeled back to punch him, overcompensated, and fell arm-first through Michael and into the door frame where he stopped, rested his head, and laughed. Oh, thank god. It had just been Michael.
"Alright, let's go back inside," he said, waving for the others to follow. He grinned at Alex and gave him a little nudge in the shoulder. "That was pretty scary."

Alex beamed. "I'm really scary," He said, and offered Toby his hand. "Come on. I want to scare you again!" He led the werewolf inside. "But we can't while you're expecting it. That's no fun! Did you like my smoke?"
Maia didn't feel very reassured. She followed Toby in and looked around. Alex followed her gaze. "I scared you, huh? I just wanted to scare your tech guy!"

Toby let out a short exhalation and smiled. "Oh, that was you?! That was pretty amazing. It seemed so real!"
Dari shook his head when they entered. Of course he had been the target. They'd lit him on fire. He closed the front door behind them.
"Sorry, guys. It was hard to resist," Michael said.
Toby waved his free hand dismissively. "Listen, compared to some days? This is cotton candy."
Michael laughed.

Alex smiled up at Toby, proud of himself. "Yes. I did the fire too. I frightened you really well, didn't I?" He looked to Michael then. "Can we scare more people together? You're really good at it."

"I thought that might have been you," Toby said with a nod, "It was pretty scary, yup."
Michael offered a smile and a polite nod. He wasn't sure how much longer they'd be here, but any chance to bond with the little spirit was to be taken. A relationship might soften the blow of the realization that he was already dead.

Alex led them in and seemed to study Toby. "Where's Winser?" he asked, smile fading suddenly. "Why'd you leave him?"
"He's taking a nap," Maia invented, hastily. "He's had a long day, meeting so many new people. He needed to rest."
"Oh," the ghost child considered this and seemed to calm slightly. "Well. You've got to take good care of him." He looked to Michael then. "Want to come color with me?" he asked.
