i wish our school have a orchestra. Or we could always form bands with only oboe and bassoon......i wonder how that will sound. But being a fellow band member, i have 2 say, double reed players works harder and practice more, when we feel like it.

I've been on oboe for just under two years, but I've worked my way up to a level higher than I "should" be at this point. :]
Because I play oboe and am the soloist (mainly due to the pieces we've played), I have a bit of a fan following of various other people in band, which now includes the two new freshman oboes. One of them is freely singing my praises to the musical class of 2012. XDD
I don't intend to give up my chair any time soon, though. I still have two years to live it out. ;]
I'm also joining a local group that my private lesson teacher plays in - the local youth symphony wasn't really my cup of tea as far as playing level is/was concerned.

I'm a bassoonist, mainly. I play 15 other instruments, but bassoon in school. I don't have marching season up here in canada. Any ambiture suggestions? I play with medium reeds and have only started playing in september, and already am tackling university level pieces (Bayou Breakdown and Nalukataq, both fairly new pieces with extremely insane bassoon solos reaching high high As.)

I just recently started Bassoon...
I need some advice on said instrument, actually...
See, I've noticed that when I play my bottom lip gets small cuts, and I need to know... Is that normal when you start on a double reed instrument (keep in mind that I'm used to brass), or should I have a spazz attack and not play the Bassoon?

Oboes are amazing. 'Nuff said.
Just kidding. Actually, I don't think I've even gotten a cut from my double reed, but the oboe reed is sufficiently smaller than the bassoon read. Maybe you're applying too much pressure? Maybe your reed just sucks/is too hard? I'd ask a pro. ^-^;

BTW, I've been a member for a while but never posted. I play oboe and english horn! I make reeds for both instruments, but I'm still quite new at the ones for English Horn. If anyone has fingering questions for oboe or EH I'd recommend the fingering chart by Martin Schuring. You can probably get it off of the website for both forrests and MCW.

i play the oboe, and i love it! everyone says i sound like a dying duck when playing or a misquito dying when i play really high, i am the only oboe in my band(only in 7th grade) and there is one in 8th, but we only have ONE bassoon in the school! hes really good though. I hate marching band because i play clarinet and i suck and when i go back to oboe it messes me up! i want to try flute in marching though
