Perhaps I haven't talked to you yet. I prefer mello simply because I haven't learned much on horn yet. I've been playing mello for 5 months and horn for not even one. Sure horn is fun, but it's terribly difficult compared to mello.

I like them both for different reasons. Mello is a bit easier to play, but horn sounds a lot nicer. I love both my (somewhat) shiny instruments <3

aaahhh don't worry about it. Tone just gets better over time. To take a quote and change it from one of my FBA judges one day soon you'll be getting a "Deep, Rich, chocolatey tone."

Or marching band camp brass technician got the nickname "Dark Chocolate" for telling the brassline to make a sound like an 8 mile deep Pacific Ocean of dark chocolate. Naturally, we proceeded to get in an argument with him about how deep the Pacific Ocean is. It's like 7.9 miles or something xD Hurrah for our nerd school. Good tone will come with time and practice. I'm still waiting for mine...

Haha I know. My tone used to suck on mello too and now I sound almost exactly like our section leader, except I don't blast my face off at every oppurtunity I get like he does. 3nodding

yeah our drum majors are both trumpets and you can tell when Davy (one of our drum majors) start playing because she over powers 70+ people even on normal range notes.

I'm going to be section leader next year and the only experienced mello. I was kind of thrown onto in July, even though I had discussed with my director me switching over from flute to mello. And I just decided this school year to learn horn, because I'll be the only one next year as well. I still cherish flute, but I wanted to play an instrument with more force and a different, richer tambre.

i play french horn at my high school and i hope to be a section leader for marching band next year.
Question: In anybody's opinion, what brand of horn do u like better and why? I have a yamaha horn that's mine and even though it's old and has some dents, which i plan to fix, it's tuning is great. My other horn, which belongs to the school, is a Conn. It has a great tone but it always seems to be sharp when i play, no matter how much i open up my throat.
If i could hear people's opinions, that would be great.

All instruments are made a bit sharp, and so if your always sharp I suggest pulling out your slides. Most of the professional players I met have a Conn, but its all preference.
