"I think you're right. I'm not personally assigned to his case any more but I'm going to keep up with it. People always tend to either hate everyone equally or hate their first agent slightly less. Sometimes." He went around and slid into the car and offered Maia yet another boyish smirk.
"Sure." Err. "You're welcome. I have a guest room for you and everything. It's nicer than the apartments. To be honest, I couldn't stand mine either."

"Oh, good. I've never met another Kelpie, so I can't say if he liked you. And he's too young to have proper manners." She supposed she wasn't one of those sometimes. "I prefer you and Dari," she said. She was a bit more cautious around the others she'd met, but they were friendly enough.
A guest room? She smiled at him. "They're awful."

"I have, and he was unusually pleasant," Toby said, eyes widening a bit. That said a lot about other kelpies. "Yeah, see? You're proving my point."
He smiled and glanced at her as he began to pull out of the parking lot.
"I know. It's the best we can do. Before the late sixties they didn't even have apartments so it's better than it was, it's just... well. It's federally run. People need somewhere to sleep and eat. Their own place. So they built stock suites and that was that. Nobody stays in them for long."

"I'm glad I haven't met others then," if the Kelpie they'd met was unusually pleasant she would have hated to see what his parents had been like.
"I know. I think I could've handled it if they'd allowed pets. Or friends to stay. But I haven't really got any, but you guys." A companion, any companion, whether furry or not was preferred to being in a lonely apartment with blank, white walls.

Toby nodded. Yes, he knew those feelings of lonliness well. Nights were hard. He'd dealt with it for years upon years. Company helped, to a point. It made everything easier. Nowadays he could honestly say he was mostly happy.
"Well, technically you can have friends stay, but if we're all just going to kip in the apartments we might as well just be at my place, right?" That was what he was telling himself anyway. "I mean, it's not very exciting, but we'll be there for you, okay?" Another quick glance, another smile. They were on the desert road and on their way away from HQ.

"Right," Maia agreed. "The pool's nice there, and I like Seamus a lot. Someday I'll get a cat when I get my own place. A job and stuff." And it was nice to have friends. Friends around her age; at least physically.
"I'm glad you came to find me," she said. "And that it wasn't someone else."

"I don't have a pool," Toby admitted. At the insinuation that he was someone special he just laughed. "Seamus is a pretty good... cat? Thing? Seamus is good people." He shook his head. "I've never seen a cat sidhe for more than a couple of seconds and he was all about the attention after we found him."

"It's because he's the best cat sidhe. I'd never met one before yesterday, and he really seems to like me. He helped me find you, and he came to visit me, and I played with him for hours and then he came to listens with me. He's like. Like a cat shaped Dari." She smiled.

"He is." Really Toby had no idea, but it wasn't hurting anyone to presume. He certainly was the most friendly. "I think he can understand us. I mean, he can understand us. For sure. I think they all can, but whether they want you to know or not makes the difference. In legend they could curse people to believe they'd been cursed for a day. That was it. Very odd. Unconfirmed too."
He gave an amused little laugh. "Oh? How so?"

"He certainly hasn't cursed me," Maia said. Strange legend, but maybe the angrier ones did. "I wish I could understand him." She smiled at him, "he's just so nice. Like Dari and you. I was nervous about classes and he came and meowed at me."

Rather than mention that Seamus seemed to have a bias toward other fae, Toby nodded. The sidhe was also far from nice here and there but Toby was glad that Seamus had been kind. He had likely sensed Maia's nervousness, and that combined with her genus had earned her a decent amount of attention. He could be fickle like any feline but his intentions were usually good.
"That's nice. We try to look out for the newbies here. Anyone inhuman has already gone through all of the same things, they know how it can be. I mean, not Seamus. He's been spoiled."

"I'm sure he knows about it," Maia said. "He seems loved, he must have met several people who needed him before." She nodded: the people she'd met had certainly been patient with her. "Do you think I could get a job here?" she wondered. "Not an agent. That's not for me. But maybe something while I'm here. Lori told me about making money."

Toby wasn't sure how helpful Seamus had been in the past but again didn't think Maia needed to hear about it.
"Oh, uh. Well. It can be hard to get a job at HQ what with all of the clearance and training and paperwork." That was for people who didn't plan on relocating very far. "I'm sure we could find something, though." He'd usually suggest retail or something simple but there wasn't much of anything near enough to headquarters that--
...
"You could probably even find a job in town if you really wanted. It can be hard. We'll need to get you set up with full identification before then, though." It could be a while. Honestly, maybe too long for her to be hired and work before relocation. "We go give every client a certain amount of money, though. You won't have to go completely without."

"Hm. I was considering staying a while. It's nice having people to relate with." And She wasn't sure she wanted to join with a clan of strangers. "I thought maybe I could work at a burger place, but that'd only be for a while." Long term, she really wanted to be able to help people.
"I'm sure I can do it," She assured him. "Then I'll be able to treat you to ice cream. And maybe other things! I want to try everything."

The economy was still screwed. The job market was struggling and stagnant. Maia would not be working, but that was okay. She needed to focus on herself for a while. Learning was her priority. She'd be able to get a job once she was more set, and if she decided to stick around a while he could help her with that.
"That's why you're here. We want you to try things and learn things and if you can enjoy yourself while doing it, all the better. I wouldn't worry too much about a job, though. Not until classes are over and you have a good amount of free time. Once we get you an identity and a bank account you'll have some spending money. The big day will probably be tomorrow or the day after. Identity, phone, a whole set of good things." He smiled but did not look to her.
