"Sorry," Axel mumbled. He reaaaaaally didn't feel like getting into a fight with Preacher now. Especially since Preacher looked like he was about to die from a coughing fit. Zin was already urging Preacher to sit down, so Axel sat himself, leaving room for Preacher should he choose to take Zin's sensible advice. Axel wasn't about to try ordering Preacher around. He didn't want to unleash a storm of bitching (and coughing).

Axel turned to Tala. He'd heard something about her wanting to join the military. It was surprising, to say the least. "You want to join the Scouting Legion?" He had a difficult time picturing shy Tala battling Titans. "That's so dangerous, Tala." He kept his voice neutral. He didn't mean to sound like a scold, but he felt a twinge of sadness looking at the bronze-skinned girl that surely showed in his face and in his voice. If she did join the Scouts, there was a better than even chance that he would never see her again.

Shun placed a hand onto his head and groaned, wondering what he did to deserve this cruel form of punishment. ... Quite a few things actually, when he really thought about that, but nothing particularly recent. He had actually been fairly helpful the past few days in general! Saved a few people, caught a runaway horse, and even cleaned up some trash.

"No. That would be a bloody nightmare. Seriously, ******** off already. Rikki's probably drowning right now or some s**t."

Shaking his head, he pushed himself off of the wall and started to try and go to a different spot, hopefully away from his source of irritation right now. Danny was bad enough without her also being drunk to make things worse. Maybe he'd have to try and get onto one of the rooftops to get a bit of seclusion before the bulk of the food was presented.

Shakuntala nodded her head to their warnings, but at the same time, it awakened the internal apprehension she had swallowed back. Bowing her head, she ran a thumb over her knuckles and replied, "I-I'm... aware of the... d-dangers. Q-Quite aware... B-But I made a promise... A promise to live. S-So I can't die." Her eyes averted to the side and she let out a bedraggled sigh with another sniffle. "Goodness... I-I must s-sound like a child..." she muttered to herself, but to a point it was audible.

"Yes!" Danny barked, holding up her little circular part. "And I brought glue!"

She threw her arm around Shun and said, "I can use it for my wedding veil!" Turning back to Rikki, she very matter-of-factly stated, "We're getting married. Shun loves me."

Zinnia's eyes widened as she heard Tala's statement. She stood up suddenly to get a better look at the young woman, as well as to draw attention to herself. "You made a promise?" she asked seriously. "So you can't die?" She fell silent for a moment, and her chocolate brown eyes passed from person to person at the table.

"Let's all make a promise!" she demanded forcefully. "Right now! Everyone! We're going to promise not to die. Ever! No matter what happens, we'll stay alive. Okay?" She glared at everyone around her, daring them to laugh. It was unusual for her to behave so seriously, and sure enough, she couldn't keep a straight face; her familiar grin broke through.

"Okay," she said in a lighter tone, "Everyone put your hands out in the middle of the table like this." She demonstrated by stretching her arm out as far as it would go. "Stack your hands up like that, and then everyone at the same time say, 'I promise to never die!' Got it?" She waited imperiously, an impish smile on her face.

At this point Axel was tempted to mention that his father had been eaten by a Titan, but it seemed like a rather heavy thing to drop into a mostly-pleasant conversation at the end of a long day. So he just shrugged, moved his arm away from Preacher's, and picked at his quiche. "I hope you keep that promise," he said quietly. He didn't know Tala very well, but he didn't like to think of the shy horse-loving girl being eaten alive.

Then Zin stood up and Axel was completely taken by surprise. He stared at her. Was she joking? Her glare turned into a smile, and, as stupid as the promising-not-to-die was, Axel didn't really have the heart to say so to the trainee. He reached out and put his hand on top of hers, trying not to elbow Preacher as he did so.

"I promise to never die."

He didn't sound terribly enthusiastic, but he smiled at Zin anyways. She really was a nice girl.

"I don't love her. I don't even like her. I don't even know where the hell she got that idea," he grumbled before fixing his hair after Danny messed with it. He hadn't picked up on the way Rikki reacted, being too distracted with his own issues right now. At least the girl let go of him.

Shun soon grunted and moved to walk away again while Danny was seemingly distracted, this time going around Rikki. As he moved off, he passed up the other group, overhearing more of their little conversation. Upon hearing Zin's words in particular, he couldn't help but shke his head. How naive.

"Don't make promises you can't keep. Everyone dies eventually," he muttered under his breath while continuing on his way.
