Emma sauntered back into the tavern, the laces of her bodice looking slightly rumpled and the stones of fire in her hair in a state of disarray.

"Well don't you look nice." The doctor was slumped in a chair by the fireplace, drinking a beer.

"I would take that as a compliment, but I have learned to know better when it comes from you." Despite the fact that her mind and senses were...elsewhere, she could still sense the discordance in the Doctor's aura.

Kaok sat in her customary booth again, the same tiny, one-eyed doll as the day before clutched in her hand. She'd done some thinking, about her own feelings at what she'd heard from Emma the other day. And she'd come to a conclusion for how to approach the situation - gifts. She didn't know why exactly, but gifts were perfect for any occasion, especially for humans. So she'd found a few more pieces of fabric and a few strings of yarn and got to work on making one of her creations look less mediocre. The little doll now had a regal cape and a bit of black hair.

"Coming together nicely."

(Edit: Bah. D: I have to go. What IS this?)

"Hey, you'd be bitter if you woke up from a coma to find that your one objective in life has been utterly failed." He took a sip from the beer and closed his eyes.

Emma smiled warmly at the Lieutenant, the afterglow she possessed transferring somewhat into her eyes. "So it is."

But her features hardened soon after that, and she turned back to the Doctor with her usual quiet chill. "Hmm."

He pulled out the doctor's journal. "So... 'Emma,' it would seem that you usually wear black and silver. Why the change?" He figured if he studied the doctor's notes, he'd get better at socializing eventually.

"I have a reason for brightness, I suppose. The attacks have stopped...for now." Not to mention she had just had an excellent....celebration.

The doctor smirked as she mentioned attacks. "And once more, I am reminded that I am no longer suitable to fulfill my purpose."

"Enlighten me further?"

The gems in her hair flickered again, all the hues of flame within their depths, along with a dot of blue-silver fire at their center.

He sighed. "I was created as a guardian. My purpose is to defend the Earth from certain danger, regardless of my status." He flipped through the doctor's journal, not reading it. "But I don't even need to read this rag to know that the Earth has been ravaged greatly while I was in my coma." He tossed the journal into the fire. "All because of the mistake you know as Dr. Question."

A subtle preservation spell saved the journal from the flames, and it reappeared in her hand, unscathed but warm. "The Earth has been decimated, but there is still life."

And hope.

"Meh. What's the point? I can already tell you that if a barrage of nuclear missiles rained down across the Earth, I would be powerless to stop it." He took another sip of his beer. "Purpose... destiny... It's pointless. I let my purpose become the center of my existence, so what now? I even named myself based on my purpose."
