Ginny nodded and uncurled only one arm to take her husband's hand. They'd already packed the car. She took a deep breath and turned to Toby one more time, offering him the house keys. "Thank you again."
"Of course," Toby said as he took the keys. Dari offered a soft, understanding smile as the couple left.
Toby peeked inside and then stepped into the house.
"Alright. Home base in the dining room?"

Maia followed after Dari and closed the the door behind her. Almost immediately activity was evident, at least to the selkie. Something took her hand. She flinched. It was something invisible.
"Michael, thoughts?" she asked.

Dari began to breathe more rapidly as he started to set things up. He wasn't sure what was strange, exactly, but something was.
Toby looked to Maia as she flinched. "What is it, love?"
Michael whispered through thin air: "Hello, little one."
Dari shivered.
Michael, invisible to the others, bent to smile at the boy and tilted his head slightly. This moment could judge the entire rest of the investigation.

Maia looked at Toby with wide eyes. "It touched me," she muttered.
The ghost studied Michael, attention torn from Maia. Hands went to touch the older man's cheeks. "You're like me." he said, then frowned slightly. "Have you seen my momma? She was here. She was here." The child was definitely frantic as he looked around. "Momma! Momma, where are you?"

Toby nodded and smiled slightly. "Freaky, isn't it?"
Dari was setting up cameras but didn't think many were going to be needed if the child was already touching Maia.
Michael nodded, allowing the ghost to touch him.
"I am," he said, "and your 'momma' isn't here any more."

Maia frowned and went to help Dari set up cameras.
The child didn't react well to Michael's words. He gave off a scream and his eyes went briefly black. "Liar!" he cried, once he regained control. One of the cameras began to shake.

Michael was unfazed. Yeah, he knew what that felt like. "Well have you found her? You haven't, because she isn't here."
Toby eyed the camera that had begun to shake and moved to hold it so it didn't tumble off of the tripod and shatter. He took a short video of it with his cell phone to show the couple.
"Guys, we had better be quick with this!" Toby called, "It's starting!"

The child glared at Michael. "Liar!" he said again, stomping his foot. Another camera began to wobble dangerously. "I can't find her. The doorknob was hot..." He looked distressed. "I can't find her."

Michael took a chance. This could be the shortest mission ever or, more likely, just like all the others with that enticing game of cat and mouse.
"I know where she is," Michael said, "She's like us." Dead, that is.
Dari held the second camera, then handed it off to Maia while he sprinted to set up the others.

"NO!" The ghost kicked at Michael before vanishing. There was nothing from the ghost for a while, then a crash sounded in the nursery. Another sounded closer to Maia, but when the selkie looked around, nothing seemed to have fallen.

Michael appeared in the kitchen, dressed in modern casual clothing. There were no cameras in there for a reason.
"He's here," the spirit said, "and he's looking for his mother."
Dari rushed from the side room to the nursery, a camera running in his hand, already attached to the top of a tripod.

Dari was met with a locked door. The doorknob was red and hot if the alien decided to try it.
"Poor thing," Maia muttered. "He's been looking looking for her all this time?"

Oh. Well. That was a little bit of pain. He waved his hand to try and cool it and shook his head. "He's made the doorknob hot!"
Michael nodded. "He said the doorknob is hot to him as well." He turned to Maia then. "I died in eighteen forty-three. Emotions can ground a spirit, especially anger, or fear... longing, maybe."

"How do we help?" Maia asked. Maybe the ghost was a frightened child, just like the ones that lived here now.
The nursery door swung open. Stuffed animals had been thrown in no particular pattern. A child, almost solid, was sitting on the floor cross legged. "I don't want you here!" he announced.

"He's had a hundred years to fester. Give me some time. I can see if I can get to him," Michael said with a sigh. Really he felt less like an ambassador on these cases and more like an obligated party; obligated by his own morals and state of living.
Dari swallowed and filmed the child. "We know you don't, but the people who live here with you want us to see if we can help you."
