"Oh, fun! Instant messenging hippies," Maia kissed Toby's cheek. "Want me to help?" She looked to Reese then. Would he invite them to see baby foxes?
"I want to swim," Reese said. "Come on. There's a stream."

"I should be alright, but you're free to keep my company if you'd like," Toby said. He smiled to Maia and ignored the urge to kiss her cheek.
"I can stay with Toby if you want to swim, Maia," Lori offered. He wasn't really one for stripping his shirt off in front of strangers.
"Sure," Dari agreed, "Can the baby come?"

Maia hesitated and looked between Toby and Lori. She'd been ready to help. "Alright," She agreed. "Where's the stream, Reese?" She asked. "You didn't show me on the tour."
"Yeah, she can come. We'll make sure she doesn't drown."

Toby winked to Maia. it would be fine, really.
"I've heard it before," Dari said. His hearing did have a limit, but it was a long stretch. He couldn't say how far the stream had been at the time, but he had heard it. "No, she won't drown. We'll hold on, won't we?" he asked the little nymph and bounced her a bit, "and if she doesn't want to come in, she doesn't have to." Her instincts might outweigh her trust.

The nymph looked concerned for a moment, before babbling at Dari. She didn't trust water. It was deep. And It moved fast. And usually it was a bad idea.
Reese led them off towards the stream.

It had been spectacular. The protestors had come a hundred on the first day, and only gained on the second and third. There was chanting, verbal conflict, and a whole lot of love for two unknown entities living in the woods via a story about rare foxes which, it turned out, actually did live in the forest. Go figure.
They had gone over the use of the beacon and the developers had moved out after the owner had a hot debate with Toby over the ownership of the land. Legal loopholes, which Dari enjoyed immensely, meant the buyer wouldn't even be able to get his money back. In what was probably an act of anger, the foundations and partially-built structures were left behind. That only meant more fun for them, and a bunch of improvised structures for the animals.
"I wished we'd found out about them sooner," Toby offered while Dari returned with pods from the magical tree in the secret glen. "We'll get you your acreage back, though, and now you're federally protected."

"You could've told me what animal you were using as the hippie lure," Reese had been amused when they'd found the one Toby had chosen actually lived there. "I could've shown you ages ago." He smiled at Toby and took one of his hands. "Seriously though, thank you." He'd have his trees back, and things would mostly go back to normal.
"...you'll still come visit though, won't you?" This was directed at Dari.

"You showed him!" Toby teased, pointing to Dari before accepting the hand-grab and smiling. "Of course. It's our job."
Dari nodded and smiled. "Of course. Plus you have the beacon for when ever you want it. Now do you want these outside the perimeter or to let the roots sort of... invade? Or both!"
Lori was happily chatting to a big cat that decided to perch on his mid-construction fuzzy-thing habitat.

"I didn't know those were rare ones!" Reese denied, but he was grinning. "Dari Really liked them." The alien had been pretty girly... But then, he'd been mushy in the time he'd known the agents too. Maybe they were rubbing off on him.
"Both," Reese said, smiling at Dari. "I think they'll grow okay. Then I can call you?"

"I did," Dari said, and plopped down. He experimentally planted a seed. Was there any magic left in these? "You can call us any time. I can't guarantee we can answer right away, but that's what the beacon's for. Yours has video too, just in case." Toby had insisted.

Once planted the seed began to glow. Reese bent down, looking curious. "It won't grow as fast as they do in that clearing," he said, "But I wonder..." Oh, video chat? So he could see Dari. "And you'll cone see me."

Dari smiled. Look at that! A magic tree grew magic seeds. Of course it did. He looked into the basket he'd picked and nodded. Reese had good parents.
"Hm? Oh, right. Of course we will. It may not be as often as we'd like, but we'll make trips."
"If humans even think about touching your forest, you tell us immediately," Toby said. He had scaled a partial structure and sat there easily.
The bobcat continued to pester Lori and 'supervise' as he worked on the new shelter. Maybe it had already claimed it? They were still a while away from the forest growing back here.

"Once every few months?" Reese guessed. He wished Dari had been willing to stay in the forest. He nodded at Toby and watched him climb. A squirrel promptly climbed and perched on the werewolf's shoulder.

Toby was more than a little surprised. He looked worried, like the creature might made a decision to chew through his ear at any moment. Dari laughed at him.
"Just about, maybe a little less than that," Dari warned Reese. "Missions are generally quick to start and require on-the-spot planning. I can't promise there won't be any interfering."

Reese snickered, seeing Toby's face. The squirrel, noticing the werewolf's concern, puffed up its tail in order to make itself more intimidating.
"I don't like less," Reese said. "Are you sure you can't bring your family here?"
