@Kizu: *takes lollipop (I hope it really wasn't a ladypop...) and sucks sadly on it* Thanks. I get depressed easily when people point out something I did wrong... And the fact that I just met him today and the day ended on a sour note makes it worse... Not to mention I might not be able to apologize to him until next Saturday or later...
I should stop before I plunge into full-blown depression. : (
And yeah, it's the Enchanted Book, first gen.

And here it is!
In the first section of "The Seafarer" the author is comparing the harshness of the sea to the easy life on the land. "Sweated in the cold of an anxious watch, with frozen chains alone in a world blown clear of love and hung with icicles." The poet is anxious because of the unpredictablity of the cold sea, and he also feels chained by the lonlieness of the sea. Also, because he is all by himself out on the ocean, he feels like his life is blown clear of love. On the sea, the poet has "No harps [to sing] for his heart, no rewards, no passion for women [or] worldly pleasures," and he "tastes [much misfortune]". The pleasures of the city that the poet describes should be enough to keep anyone happy. For some reason the poet can't help b be drawn bck to the cold unforgiving ocean. Even though the poet compares the land and the sea, the sea will always hold preference to him.
In the second part of the poem, the author talks about the transcience of earthly wealth. He says that" "The wealth of the world neither reaches to Heaven nor remains [after death]", and that "The praise the living pour on the dead Flowers from reputation.." The poet is trying to say that no matter how many things you have during life, none of it will follow you to heaven after you die. He is also telling us that the praise people give to the dead is directly related to their social status within the living world. He also states that "[If you] plant an earthly life of profit reaped even from hatred and rancor, or bravery flung in the devils face, and death can only bring you earthly praise and a song to celebrate a place with the angels..", and " No man has ever faced the dawn certain which of fate's three threats would fall: illness, or age, or an enemy's sword snatching the life from his soul." He is saying that If you're wealthy, but you have a bad personality the praise you receive upon your death won't give you any wealth in heaven, just a song. He is also saying that no-one can be certain of the threats that accompany each new day, and likewise no-one can be certain when they will die. So in general the poet is telling us that the riches of the earth are with us only as long as we are alive, which can be changed at any time on any day.
In the ending section on the poem the poet is talking about how his way of life is dead, and he is looking back upon it. He says that "The days are gone when the kingdoms of earth flourished in glory, now there are no rulers, no emperors, no givers of gold, as once there were, when wonderful things were worked among them and they lived in lordly magnificence," and "Those powers have vanished, those pleasures are dead." He is remembering the earlier times when Comitatus was the ruling law, and times were better for everyone. The poet is telling us that now the older, better, way of life and the pleasures that came along with it have passed on. He also says "All glory is tarnished, the worlds honor ages and shrinks, bent like the ment who mold it," "The weakest survives and the world continues, kept spinning by toil." The poet is telling us that now there is no glory within the world, and that the world is becoming corrupt just like the people who now inhabit it. When he talks about the weakest surviving he is making another reference to Comitatus because under that law, only the strongest survived and the weak were left behind. Clearly our poet is the survivor of a time long past, who often laments its passing. Nano - *hugs* G'night!
