I think all of Kael's weapons so far count as mundane.
He's broken three swords. The one he borrowed from the HoH staff and used in the post-HoH events got beaten up really badly and then returned. And his current blade he had forged using his prize money is just another standard one. Actually, all his swords he's either borrowed from the HoH equipment for fighters, or paid to have forged for him. If he hadn't placed in the top four this HoH he probably would be without a sword right now due to lack of funds.
JB is giving him something special, for sure. Whether it'll be outwardly magical or most just supernatural because of plot significance, I've no clue.
