The bird moved closer to Lori, picking at his hair and then looking to the elf. It gave a happy chirp.
Reese nodded. "Yeah, you kind of do. Maybe I'll tell them to trust people I like..." He considered, and grinned at Lori's interaction with his bird. "She likes you."
"Really? So there might be a bunch of them..." The guardian looked slightly alarmed. He hoped they wouldn't all be as little as the first.

"Oh, 'she,' huh? She's a pretty bird," Lori said, more than likely to the bird. He rubbed the side of her neck gently.
"There could be," Dari agreed, "She might have come from an adult nymph. It's pretty easy to just pick a bud off your own tree and make a baby. I'm going to guess not, though, or we'd have an annoyed nymph on our hands most likely." Only most likely, though. If the baby had a mother, maybe she trusted them.

The bird in question puffed up her feathers and chirped. She was pretty, wasn't she? She nuzzled his hand after he petted Her.
"There aren't any adult nymphs in the area," Reese said, then. "I would've met them. I'd never seen one before her. I like her. But I don't think I'd like twenty toddling around and getting into everything."

"Oh, no. Nymphs are rare nowadays. In this forest you'd probably get three maximum, and that's if you get very lucky. With the people moving in, there probably wouldn't be any for a while."
Lori continued to murmur to his new bird friend in Elvish.

Only three? "Why are they so rare?" he asked. At least, the one could keep him company. Being a guardian became lonely sometimes.
The bird nuzzled Lori again, chirping in response. Dari's bird hopped onto his finger and leaned in attempt to peck his nose. Failing, the bird clicked his beak at him.
The nymph was beginning to wake. She stirred, eyes opening. Her arms went around Toby's shoulders. "Poppy!"

"Magic is hard to find these days. Humanity's moved in," Dari said, and then turned to the bird, "Hey! If you don't like me, why are you still here?!"
Toby chuckled and held the nymph close. "Hello again!"

"I don't like when humans ruin things," the guardian muttered. "Magic makes the world more beautiful." He looked over. "He likes you just fine," He assured. "He's just a tough guy. He's telling you he's in charge."
The nymph yawned in response. "Poppy," she said, and reached a hand to pat his cheek.

"You're in charge, alright?!" Dari laughed. He didn't comment on the whole humanity-ruining-magic thing. There was still a very small portion of human who still believed, and and even smaller one that worked to save it. "He certainly doesn't seem like he likes me."
"Oh, yes. Poppy." Toby laughed again and stroked the nymph's hair. "Do you want to go back to your tree now, Honey?"

Dari's bird seemed satisfied at this and gave a chirp. It settled comfortably back on the alien's shoulder. Reese rolled his eyes.
The nymph gave a sound of distress and her grip on Toby tightened. "No!"
"I think she's gotten attached," Maia said, and looked around. Maybe Reese would be able to convince her.

Dari laughed. Well, at least he had a bird friend now. Oop!
"The baby's awake."
Toby laughed and stroked the nymph's back. "It's okay! You don't have to go back if you don't want to! You tell me when you want to go back to your tree, okay?" Toby shrugged. "It's fine. It won't harm her to be away from the tree, as long as we keep her away from the developers she'll be fine."

Reese phased to Toby and Maia, reaching for the nymph. She didn't respond well to this, flattening herself against Toby and glaring at the guardian. "My poppy!" she said, and clung to Toby.
Reese frowned and glanced at Maia, then Toby. "I guess she can stay out a while longer."

"She's lucky to have you," Toby said, hoping to assuage the ancient guardian, "Most nymphs live alone and develop with no help. This one has someone to keep an eye on her. I think she'll do great here." He smiled to the spirit.
Lori and Dari began their walk back.

Reese started to smile. "I couldn't leave her alone, she's too little. I didn't want her getting hurt." And besides, it was nice to have someone who could talk around, even if they did mostly babble.
Maia moved closer to Toby, and the toddler turned to frown at her. "My poppy," she said.
The selkie just grinned. "Reese, did you abandon our friends somewhere?"

"I'm glad you love her," Toby said with a nod. He laughed when Maia came closer. "That's Maia," he said, looking to the nymph. "She's my special friend."
"We're right here!" Dari called. They were still a bit away, though.

"She's his girlfriend," Reese piped up, and grinned. The toddler turned to the guardian and reached for him. "Ree!"
Reese took her. "You're super heavy, you know," He complained.
"Dari! I was beginning to think you'd gotten lost!" Maia waved at the two.
