Isiah laughed a little, digging through the duffle behind Tsurai's head to find it. "Yeah, I still got it.. unfortunately.. but a book isn't the best way to learn to read, I don't think.. We should start with letters, and how they sound or something." He rubbed the back of his head uncomfortably.

Tsurai let out a shallow laugh. "I know the alphabet. And I know numbers. I can read and write numbers like no tomorrow. I'm pretty sick of numbers."
"Hey, Tsurai, go to this house for me, I'll give you the money to buy. No offense or anything, but your family's too expensive"
"Fine. Give it. But if the guy tries to beat me, you owe me for not killing him."
"God... I don't think I like numbers.." Tsurai grumbled in afterthought.

Isiah smiled easily, unconciously glad to be ignorant of the true difficulty of Tsurai's past. "Well.. then you know how each letter and vowel sounds, right? .. It'd be easier if you tell ME what you know. That way I won't have to repeat any old information."

Tsurai huffed. "Well, I'd sing the alphebet, but I think the world would be better off if I didn't. It's all I know. Forget I asked. This is stupid."
Tsurai rolled over on his good arm, back to Isiah. "Shouldn't even bother trying anymore." Tsurai closed his eyes and exhaled shakily, clearly upset that he was too stupid to read or write... Letters.
"Jake. We sold every gram for fifty, evaded with one million this year, and sold.. how many pounds... I think it was 500. How much profit did we make, boy?" "Do it yourself, Brian." "Don't talk to me like that! Maybe I'll go for the face this time, make you hideous to look at! I can have Alex do it, watch you scream! Or would you prefer I go after Sarah, instead?" "One mill, 35 thousand. Jesus. I'm going out."
"Just give it up, already," Tsurai grumbled, mostly to himself. Gah, the pain in his arm was bringing him back a little too much.
"Isiah. Say something smart. I need to get my mind off... s**t.."

Isiah snorted, smiling weakly. He mussed Tsurai's hair again, gently with his palm. "Braeden's a retard." That was his smart remark of the day. Evening. Whatever. "You want to tell me what's on your mind?"
It worried him, all the weight Tsurai carried on his shoulders. He didn't understand how he could be so mature, and simultaneously, naive.

Tsurai frowned. Braeden wasn't a retard. But Tsurai had gotten used to that insult, so it only stung a little. "Math problems, is all. Really stupid math problems. And.." He shuddered. "More of that split-second thinking s**t. My brain can't do that well, and hesitation isn't exactly such a great other option."
Tsurai groaned and pushed off the duffelbag, preferring to use his arm as a pillow, instead. Flat surfaces were easier to fall asleep on, anyway. Although he wasn't tired. Just depressed.

Isiah shrugged it off, standing. "Stay put, okay? I'm gonna go get the lighters and bunsen back." He rolled his head on his shoulders, leaning back to stretch, his back popping. He wanted to come off as casual, but instead, gave the impression that he was preparing for a fight.
He gave Tsurai another odd look. "You gonna be okay while I'm gone?"

"I said no," Tsurai growled, not bothering to get up, but glaring at Isiah from his place on the ground.
"We can live without the ******** burner and the lighter. Pick your ******** battles."
Tsurai groaned and put his face on his arm, turning onto his stomach.
"You go, I'll..." Tsurai couldn't think of anything at that moment. "Well. You won't like it when I think of it."

Isiah grunted. "Nothing personal, kid, but I don't let old faggots push me around. Especially old Kappas twenty years past their prime. It'll only take me a minute." He laughed a little at Tsurai's idle threat.
"You can come along and babysit me, if you want. I promise not to break more than two of his bones."

Tsurai sat up and glared at him. "I'm not kidding. It doesn't feel right."
The boy frowned. "I won't deny you're awesome at fighting, but only at fair fights. You know nothing about street fighting. If Braeden or that kid he was talking to has a weapon, you're screwed." It sounded kind of funny coming from a boy with a huge knife slash down his face, but it was true.
"You don't have any kind of.. I don't think it's a good idea to go. And it'd be a worse idea if I went. I'm pretty much useless and he knows hurting me is gonna kill your insides."

Isiah grunted. "Kid, you know s**t about Denziens. I've been in my share of knife fights." He was tempted to stick his tongue out. "I could beat Braeden if he had an eagle, with one armed tied behind my back, and a monkey humping my leg." Isiah blinked. That sounded better in his head.
He sat down after that one, grumbling. "I'm the last person YOU need to be worrying about. You just don't want Braeden to get hurt."

Tsurai picked up a nearby pebble and threw it at Isiah. "You have no idea what I want."
With a sigh, Tsurai stood up. "You kicked his a** once already, can't you just celebrate your stupid victory?"
After Tsurai said that, he forgot why he stood up. He couldn't remember if he was going to offer to go first or to track Isiah. Neither seemed like viable options. Tsurai didn't know what to say when he got to Braeden, and he didn't know this town well enough, so he' probably trip and fall or something and kill his slim chances of stealth.

Isiah had no intention to be stealthy or sneaky. He was going to walk over and ask Braeden for the pilfered merchandise, loudly. And if the old man gave him trouble.. well, he was more than prepared to take care of it. He watched as Tsurai stood, folding his arms over his knees, wondering what the kid would do next.
"Yeah? I might if you told me."

Tsurai slapped his hand to his head, the dogtags jingling outside the zipped up coat of Isiah's. "I don't know yet. My brain is still thinking about the damn math problems to think about a solution to this. Maybe starving myself and insomnia ain't the best conditions for smart thinking."
Tsurai closed his eyes and shifted his weight to one leg, letting otu a loud sigh. "Okay," Tsurai thought to himself. "It's possible this is nothing, but let's just think about it for a second. Go over what happened today. Rumors. Denzien kid. Unfair fights... I can piece this together... I'm useful.."
Tsurai lit up with a smile, taking his hand from his face and shifting his weight to the other leg. "I know what it is." Then he frowned.
"Wait."
Tsurai looked around, but it was too dark to tell if anyone was watching them.
"I'm still really cold," He lied. "Is there anything else you have that I could have? I'm gonna die here."

Isiah went into the duffle and yanked out the still sweatladen shirt he had been digging in earlier- it was little more than a glorified wifebeater, but it would have to do. "I didn't bring any other extra clothes. I never had any, anyway." He held the shirt out to him. "Might wanna put it on under the jacket though. Might look kinda stupid."
Isiah wasn't feeling cold at all. In fact, the weather was perfect for him. A little tinge of coolness.. But he felt warm all the time, due to the accursed sunburn, so perhaps he wasn't one to talk.
