Concerning blitzkreig: Does it matter?

I just had to play a Iron Wariiors army yesterday with my Tau.
2000 points, he had four tanks (2 pred, a land raider, and a dug in basilisk).
It was a cleanse.
In the end he had six warriors left (in two seperate squads) and a pred with no main gun and immobilised.
I won by a 1500 point victory point margin, and I claimed all of the table quaters.
Six turns.
I did it by getting close and personal, point blank with my pulse rifles.
Just an example.

Remember: an army is only as good as the player.

Well, any vehicle heavy army tends to fall pretty quickly to our mass of high Str weapons. I remember a game against a Dark Angels where he had 2 Razorbacks, 2 dreadnaughts, a Predator and a Rhino. One Hammerhead rampaged up the side of the board and took out a Razorback, both Dreadnaughts, the Pred and the Rhino by turn 6. Heck, artillery like Basilisks and Whirlwinds can be destroyed by Deep Striking Gun Drones.

But you were rapid firing with your pulse rifles? How did you not get assaulted? Was he just stupid or were you useing the FoF?

Hello. I'm looking for some advice on getting a good army going. My main opponents will probably be Necrons, Eldar, and Tyranids. Since I'm new to 40k, any suggestions on how to start off my Tau army would be great. I was thinking of buying the battleforce, but I'm not really sure. Help, please?

A battleforce is a nice start, and probably the best value you can buy via retail now that GW has jumped all of thier prices. If you're on a budget, or just want to avoid paying GW's sky-high prices, I suggest looking at Ebay for both pre-built and still in box models. I bought my first 1000 points of of Ebay and saved something like 150 dollars.

To fill out both points and Force Org. choices, I suggest a Hammerhead (or at least two Broadsides, but the tank is cheaper), a Devilfish, some Pathfinders and Stealth Suits. Alot of people dump on Pathfinders because they are the most expensive unit we have and they're not too hot at doing all that much damage, but they the most cost-efficient way to get Markerlights, and the Tau NEED Markerlights to offset their less than stellar BS 3.

When you build your Crisis Suits remember: DO NOT GLUE THE WEAPONS ON! Either use magnets, or pins, or blu-tac, or just wedge them in, but glueing the weapons robs your suits of one of thier most useful abilities, the ability to be kitted out for any occasion. While I may use the same commander configuration every time, it took me a couple months before I found a configuration that works well for my play-style.

Don't worry too much about counter-race strategies until you have a handle on how the game plays.

If anyone knows how to play Tau, I do, my record is 63-7.

And concerning the earlier question of whether or not I was assaulted:
In one case I assaulted him (aun'shi).
In the other case he stayed back and rapid fired me instead of charging.

To take out vehicles I rely on my broadsides and seeker missiles.
With each broadside able to engage a different target, I can potentially take down three tanks a turn.

I'm curious, what is everyone's favorite XV8 configuration?

Ah. I can't understand why he rapid fired instead of assaulting. Marines of any sort should be able to put down unassisted Tau in a round or two of CC with minimal, if any, causalties of thier own. Maybe he just figured he was 7" out once he moved.

I try to field 2 tanks and a Broadside team, so that I can free up my tanks to either use the Submunition or carry an Ion Cannon. Although, if I could afford it, I'd consider fielding 9 Broadsides.

My favorite XV8 config? I like to kit out my Shas'o as a Fireknife with a Shield Generator. Fireknife (missile/plasma/multi) is probably my favorite config, but I use Sunforge (fusion/plasma) more.

Yes, he was just stupid, I think...
He blatantly broke all the WYSIWYG rules.
It was just too easy beating him.

My favorite suit config is Burning Eye (plasma/plasma) with each one hving a drone controller instead of target locks.
My other favorite, for Shas'os, is the TL missile pod and shield generator config.
Takes out light vehicles like crazy.

Well, I don''t sweat people breaking WYSIWYG, just as long as they tell me what it is instead. I''m more annoyed at people who break actual rules, like the kid I played in my first game with my Tau. He''s like, nine or something, so I can''t really hate him for playing like he did, but he knew less of the rules than I did, and he ignored alot of the rules for his own army. Lets go over some of this guy''s mistakes:

+ We played a 1000 point game, but he fielded Commisar Yarrick
+ His other HQ choice consisted of an entire squad of Heroic Senior Officers. (I''ve talked to some other Guard players since then, who thought it might technically be legal, but they didn''t have a codex on them, so they weren''t sure.)
+ He had a tank with a Ordinance weapon on it, moved it 6", then fired the plasma side sponsons in addition to his Ord. template.
+ He also gave the tank both a heavy stubber and another secondary (lascannon?), despite the text on the tank specifically saying it could be given one or the other, not both.
+ He also was unfamiliar with the insta-kill rules. I didn''t know much about them either, but I realized much later that his whole squad of Heroic Seniors should have evaporated under plasma fire, rather than sitting there for two turns.

Oh, and TL Missile Pods is Death Rain. wink

Yup, illegial, I think you have to have 1500 points.

Totally illegial. A heroic senior officer comes with four guardsmen. He wasnine, and apparently not very "in tune" with the rules. I really hate beating little kids, they cry to their mommys if you beat them, so I am always like "great job, you did really well" when all they do is kill some gun drones...

Yup, can fire ord if he moves up to 6, but it scatters twice as far. Can't fire anything in addition to demolisher cannon. Can only fire one primary (str 7 or higher) weapon if he moves at all.

Heavy stubber? Do you mean heavy bolter? You can have one or the other as the hull mounted weapon. It is possible to have two pintle mounted weapons, like a heavy stubber and a storm bolter. But, again, he cheated...

Yup.
Plus, if he had used that unit, it should've cost around 400 points...

If your wondering, I played Imp Guard mechanized for a time, so I know their rules intimately.
