we just mostly play percussion (im an oboe player) but my director says that if we REALLY wanted march, we can "fake" playing an instrument on the field. oh, you guys are lucky! this year, we're going to have EIGHT FREAKING OBOES. 3 in each band...its actually a little frightening/creepy, because this is the most the high school has ever had.

Wait a tick, why can't you march with oboes and such? Not that my school has a marching band, but I've jumped around and done all sorts of dumb things with and oboe in my mouth...

This is my first year of marching band(started as a sophomore) and I'm marching alto sax.
there are 3 oboes in concert band, but I'm the only one in my grade V_V There's a senior and an incoming freshman who's not sure if she's stayin in band!

DoktorPhil Wait a tick, why can't you march with oboes and such? Not that my school has a marching band, but I've jumped around and done all sorts of dumb things with and oboe in my mouth... you can't march double reed instruments because the reeds don't have any protection, so if you were to suddenly stop, the reed could break or injure you. Unlike saxes and clarinets, double reed instruments don't have a mouthpiece. The reed is just there.

Me too! I'm in the symphonic band, but either way, I'm first and last chair oboe, too. That's my band nickname, is Oboe Hobo. So, I gave the flute players a nickname that they just love, Fluteloops! That's freakin' awesome dude!!! XD

Hey, I play basson 2 and I play the crash cymbols at Marching Season. The oboe players have 2 play saxiphone or flute. Our band only have 1 bassoon, yes me. We have 2 oboe players but 1 of them is a total slaker, she doesn't play at all. But the other oboe players play really loud.

Hey everyone~! I've been a proud oboe player for 2 1/2 years and I've been my youth symphony's principal oboe for 2 years (in the 4th and 3rd groups, of course. not the top. ^^; ). I hope to move up again this year (and stay principal 0.0 please no one really good come along to audition~! <3 )
Has anyone else kind of gotten used to solos? I think maybe I'm just weird. But last year we played the overture from Mozart's 'Cosi fan Tutte' and I feel unaffected by solos now...
Nice to meet everyone~

Aquamarine2011 DoktorPhil Wait a tick, why can't you march with oboes and such? Not that my school has a marching band, but I've jumped around and done all sorts of dumb things with and oboe in my mouth... you can't march double reed instruments because the reeds don't have any protection, so if you were to suddenly stop, the reed could break or injure you. Unlike saxes and clarinets, double reed instruments don't have a mouthpiece. The reed is just there. That and the fact that double reeded instruments are expensive and much harder to play then the other istruments. Besides, anyone who's played one woodwind instrument and has gone to a double reed knows exactly how hard it is to get air through the reed as compared to a flute or clarinet. Most people lack the lung capacity to march a double reed. Besides, if you get hit that reed is going to jam in to the back of your skull. That means you're out 2,025 dollars. 2,000 to remove the splinters from your mouth, and 25 for a new reed. Besides, rarely do you ever have many double reed players just because of the price of the instrument. They're loud... but not that loud. You wouldn't be able to hear them anyway... unless there were a lot of you. But anyway, I'm a bassoon! (Blah, imagine marching that... neck pain and arm pain for life...) and I march the piccolo. But I can also play cymbals, drums (not drum set though), various percussion (except the keyboards...), oboe, flute, and I used to know how to play violin. I think I could learn again. My next instrument is gonna be Trumpet. I heart the trumpet! But not as much as bassoon... double reed all the way! We have to stick togethor!!!

I don't know what you guys ae talking about the bassoon rules over all double reeds. Nothing can stand in their way.
