Jack was tempted to try to break the thick, awkward silence that had settled over them. However, he decided to give Boone a few minutes to think things over. Besides, if he opened his mouth now, Jack was sure to screw something up. He sighed and tipped his head back, looking up at the stars.

Boone finaly snapped out of his `daydreaming`and looked back over to Jack.
''So how is everything between you and Kate?''
The words just slipped out of his mouth. `way to go Boone!`
He bit his lower lip, scared to see how Jack would react.

Jack laughed lightly at Boone's question.
"Things between me and Kate, hey? I'm not even really sure there is a 'me and Kate' anymore," Jack chuckled.
It strangely didn't upset him, despite how much he had felt for Kate in the months before.

Jack stood up and walked the few steps to the water's edge. He kicked off his shoes and waded in. It was refreshing and served to clear the cloud that had obscured Jack's senses. He turned around to face Boone.
"I envy you, Boone," Jack said simply.

"You're young, you have so much potential for the future, you have your sister here with you. Why wouldn't I envy you? We all have problems, but I'm thinking that I'd rather trade problems than have to deal with my own anymore," Jack said, shaking his head.

Jack probably didn't know half the story of Boone and Shannon. He would probably not envy him as much if he knew.

Jack sniffed indignantly.
"You not being able to get away from your sister on an island is not completely unnatural. I'm thousands of miles from my family and I can't run, either. That is a little less normal. Even if we are on an island, the potential is still and always will be there. You're not cursed, either. No matter how much you want to believe that. Accidents happen, to some more than others. It could just as easily have been me, or Sayid, or Hurley," Jack continued on.
He didn't want Boone wasting his youth on problems that people twice his age shouldn't be facing.

At this, Boone stood up and looked around. He leaned against a tree and looked up to the sky.

"Does it really make a difference if you can't run, though? I mean, at least she's here in case you need her. You can run all you want but you can also stop running and be there with her if you need to or if she needs you. With me, I can try to run from my family all I want and I can't escape, but then they're not here if something should happen to me," Jack said.
He tried to sort out his emotions. They were beginning to completely drain his resolve.

Boone sighed. He understood what Jack was saying..he was also begining to feel bad for him.
''Her be there for me..''
He mumbled before turning his attention back to Jack.

Jack was determined not to let anything happen to him on this God forsaken island. Jack might very well shoot himself if he wasn't in peak condition. It was all he had on the island. His strength and knowledge.
"On top of that you have so many virtues. No matter what the situation, what kind of a crazy swing shift happens, you have a lot more than most of the survivors can boast. You're lucky, Boone, I hope you realize that," Jack said wistfully.
He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly into the night air.

Boone rolled his eyes. He had some things others had..but he wasn't as lucky as Jack said. He sighed and decided to change subjects before he got any other moodswings again.

Jack's heart lurched at this question. He hissed in a breath through his teeth and swallowed the growing ball of dread forming in his throat.
"You could say that..." Jack trailed off.
He hadn't thought about her in a long time. He wasn't sure he was ready to think about her again. Still, grateful for the change in subject, Jack complied.
