Lancaeriel tilted her head slightly as she considered the question.

"Well ... yes, water isn't really an offensive force," she mused aloud, "just because on its own, it really doesn't cause a lot of damage. No pain. It makes things wet. And of course, if you're traveling, it ensures that you won't die of thirst."

"Is this going to turn into a lesson?" Wren interrupted, arching one eyebrow.

Lancaeriel giggled. "It may."

"Uh huh." Wren grinned. "I'll catch you up later then. See you all."

And she left the room. By this time, Andarien had also left to go back to his designs, and Earendil was listening out of sheer boredom.

Miyuki laughed as she settled herself to listen to her teacher. She was use to conversations becoming lessons.

"Ah well, she's missing out," Miyuki replied cheekily.

Lancaeriel laughed heartily at Miyuki's comment.

"Personally, I agree," she giggled, "but it's not for everyone. But perhaps she has a point. Maybe we should move our conversation to your tent."

"Don't go on my account," Earendil said quickly. "It breaks the tedium."

Lin giggled from where she was snuggling up against Earendil. She had taken to slowly cuddling up against him while listening it. Magic wasn't her thing, but she recognized that it gave Earendil something to mull on, or at least listen to.

Miyuki also grinned, "As long as no one minds."

Earendil put one arm around Lin and stroked her shoulder tenderly, and he was also grinning (albeit tiredly).

"I might as well learn something while I'm sitting here," he said cheerfully.

Lancaeriel smiled and shook her head bemusedly. "If you insist."

She turned back to Miyuki. "Fire is a force that even on its own, whether in large or small amounts, is dangerous and harmful. Water on the other hand is a source of life, and to use it offensively is far more difficult. For example, if I were to throw a fistful of fire in your face, you would likely be burned, possibly blinded, and definitely in pain. But were I to throw some water in your face ..."

She flicked her hand towards Miyuki, and a jet of water spurted into Miyuki's face. While there was some force behind it, there wasn't much, and in quantity it was like having a cup of water thrown at her.

Miyuki jerked back and shook her head, droplets of water flying everywhere. She brought her hand to her face to wipe out the rest of it, but she was quite well aware that she couldn't see.

"It doesn't hurt, but I can't see through the water all that well," Miyuki murmured.

Part of it was that the water drops if allowed to drop from her lashes would get into her eyes. Causing her to blink and impair her vision.

Lancaeriel stepped towards Miyuki and passed her hands in front of her, and the water dried in seconds.

"It serves as a distraction and can buy you time in a fight," she explained patiently, "but when used as a summon wields very little ability to injure or subdue. Even using it repeatedly will do little to aid you. Having used it once, your attacker is aware of the risk, and will take steps to defend himself against it. Raising his hand to protect his eyes, using a shield to deflect it back at you ..."

Miyuki nodded, it wouldn't be useful once it could be deflected back and the moment of surprise was gone.

"So, as a distraction it could only be used once," Miyuki mused.

But there was more to water than that, she noticed water was a bit... odd.

"After all it is a liquid, liquid gives way..." Miyuki tilted her head and then amended, "Unless you hit the surface of the water really hard, I hear that can hurt."

Lancariel giggled softly. "Yes, that's true, but unless you're planning on dropping your attacker from a great height onto a large body of calm water, I'm afraid that fact won't help you."

She sighed. "Water does have great power, but really, only in large quantities. Now, if you had the ability to freeze it, that would be different. Ice can be devastating even in tiny pieces - sometimes even more so when it's that small."

"Ice...." Miyuki thought about it and then glanced over to her mother, "Isn't there family who...."

Lin nodded at this, "Yue, Yukito and Miyu all use ice and snow to a certain degree. Yue will throw ice shards, Yukito likes to dump snow and Miyu... I'm not sure what Miyu does with that..."

It was obviously something the girl inherited from her father, but Miyu was such a gentle person that Lin couldn't imagine her doing anything harmful with it.

"I mean... besides make ice cream."

"Unfortunately, while ice makes a wonderful weapon, it has very little practical use in traveling, so you might also want to consider that while you decide which element you would like to learn," Lancaeriel cautioned Miyuki with a smile.

After a moment, she added, "Not that you are limited to only one, of course, but you would want to start with only one. And aside from fire, water and ice, there is also wind, earth, plants, lightning, darkness ... each of them with their own uses and usefulnesses."

Earendil shook his head slowly, though he had to stop quickly to keep from dizzying himself. "No wonder you were amused when Kyrie looked doubtful about your ability to defend yourself," he muttered.

Lin giggled, "And the reason why you wouldn't give a list."

Though even Lin, who wasn't really a learner of magic, knew that there were very few limitations to magic. To ask someone as old as Lancaeriel to list what she could do.

Miyuki thought about it, and since she couldn't really imagine using elements for traveling she had to ask.

"What other elements would be useful for traveling?"

Lancaeriel smiled at Lin. She was right.

"Fire of course can be used for starting fires for cooking and heat," she said, turning to Miyuki once more, "in addition to being very powerful offensively. You might use wind to help with the weather ... divert a storm, I suppose, or create a breeze in stifling heat ... though it is always dangerous to tamper with nature. Earth magic can be useful in creating comfortable places to sleep, or making it easier to climb cliffs. With enough knowledge you can sense changes in the earth and use the information gleaned to your advantage."

She paused. "Plant magic is very useful, offensively, defensively, and in travel, but because you are dealing with living things, it requires the most strength and is by far the most difficult to master. Plants can be used for food, to sustain life, provide shelter ... offensively, vines are extremely helpful in ensnaring opponents, or making it difficult for them to get to you by simply making the underbrush too thick for them to pass through."

Lightning and darkness really had little to offer by way of making travel easier, so she left those out and gave Miyuki time to think about what she'd been told.

Miyuki didn't say anything at first, because she really wanted to think about it. Logically, she knew fire would be the best choice, it was versatile, good offensively and good for travel.

Water would only work if she could summon a lot of it for combat and what Miyuki didn't know was that water going at fast speeds could do quite a bit of damage, but properties of water wasn't something she was familiar with.

Ice would be certainly more keeping with her mother's side of the family, but it really didn't have any use outside of battle. Though she did wonder how much of a leap it was between water and ice.

Earth was good for defense and offense, she could already see that. It would be useful for traveling, but she wasn't quite sure if it was something she would want to use.

Wind, could also be powerful and she could probably use it along side her battle fans, but she wasn't comfortable with the idea of tampering with the weather for travel purposes.

Then there were plants, that sounded hard but there was a lot of potential there. She understood why it was hard though, you were pretty much giving life to a living being to grow and that took energy. She wasn't going to by pass it because it was hard though, there was an old teacher of hers that would whack her with a staff if she did.

Finally, after much thought Miyuki replied.

"Plant magic."

This both surprised and didn't surprise Lin. Kitsunes were supposed to be well known for fire magic, but she was sure seeing Yasu burn a soldier to death had a lot to do with her choice.

Lancaeriel wasn't in the least surprised by Miyuki's choice. While plant magic was very helpful - both for defending and traveling - it was difficult to go overboard and kill someone with it, which was exactly Miyuki's nature. Even in defending her own life, she was loathe to take another's.

She gave no thought to the fact that she'd cautioned Miyuki that it would also be the most difficult of the magicks to learn. Difficult hadn't fazed Miyuki before, why would it now?

"Then while Cael is gone," she told Miyuki with a warm smile, putting one hand on the girl's shoulder and giving it a light squeeze, "you and I shall work in the gardens."

"What about the conservatory?" Earendil suggested, recalling Miyuki's and Andarien's desire to bring life back to the room.
