Lin blinked at Shiro wondering if his tablet had been acting weird since being among elves tended to make the air more magically charged than Gaia, even on clan grounds where nearly everyone had a bit of magic to them.
"What does receptive mean?" Miyuki asked Shiro not understanding a word he just said.
Lin sighed and then answered Arahad, "It's called a tablet, there is utterly no equivalent I can possibly use to describe what it is. All I can say is that it allows Shiro to get some of his work done here while he is away from home."
Honestly what was she supposed to say? It processes data, that meant nothing here.

"Sorry," Shiro apologized, reaching over and putting the tablet to sleep with a touch. "I shouldn't have it out at meals. I apologize."
"Don't worry about it," Haradhel assured him. "We're just curious, that's all."
Shiro pursed his lips thoughtfully. Was there a way he could explain it that would make sense to the elves? Technology this advanced was completely foreign to them - even something as advanced as a shower was!
"It's just difficult to explain," he said finally. "Perhaps if we have time, I can show you a bit how it works, that would be the best way to explain."

"That would probably be the best way," Lin replied going back to her food, "It's hard to explain something like that. Considering you're always on the cutting edge of technology."
Most Gaians didn't even own something like that, or if they did, they probably owned a less complicated version of it.
MIyuki blinked as she watched it become blank, it looked like nothing more than a piece of plastic and metal now. She still didn't get what Shiro wanted to do with it, but began to eat her breakfast again slowly.

Shiro chuckled. "And in this case, I'm trying to get ahead of it," he told Lin as he started eating. "What I want to do is see if I can figure out some way to make it bridge the worlds. Connect to Ura on my computer when I'm here. I'd never have to leave here again, but I'd still be able to do everything I used to - but much faster!"
His tone grew enthusiastic as he talked about his idea.
"Even without radio signals, I believe that magic, as a common element between our worlds, could be used to transmit messages and information," he went on. "It's clear that Gaian magic works here, and Kaa-san's magic works in Gaia, so they're compatible. In theory, it should work!"

Lin smiled wryly at Shiro, at least she understood the gist of what he was saying. She was pretty sure he lost everyone else, but she understood the concept. After all, she owned a cellphone.
"Shiro, wouldn't the time difference cause problems though in transmitting the data?" Lin inquired.
Let it be known that Lin at least tried to understand classes back at home.

"Does your body spend days in limbo waiting for the remainder of your arm to pass through the portal?" Shiro asked in reply, challenging her. "Or does the time between the two worlds temporarily equalize? Would the information arrive in spurts? Or would it be instantaneous?"
He looked at her intently. "You remember how part of the reason Ura stayed home was so that he and I could experiment and see if we could still send messages to each other across the worlds? Read each others' minds, as it were?"

"Yes, I remember," Lin had wondered about that actually.
Mainly she wondered how many times in a day Ura could be bothered because Shiro would send many more messages than Ura would in theory.

"It works," Shiro said simply. "And strangely, I don't have to wait for replies. When I talk to him, his answer is right there, as if we were standing right beside each other and having a conversation. As if somehow we're bringing the two worlds together, slowing down the time rift between them."
It didn't make sense to him, but he had never studied magic. All he could do was observe.

"That... honestly makes my brain hurt," Lin admitted.
In so many ways it wasn't even funny, well it was funny but on the other hand it wasn't funny at all.
"Well... if you figure it out, I don't suppose a cellphone would be possible in the future would it?"
Calling once a month or two would certainly beat shoving letters through the nearest portal.

Shiro clucked his tongue thoughtfully. "Maybe," he admitted, "though they do work differently. Still, I can see what I can do. I have to warn you though, if I did that for you, it would be the only one of its kind - I wouldn't do it for anyone else, so I'd have to trust you to keep it to yourself, not tell people outside of the family."
Earendil frowned slightly at his cousin. "Why is that?"
Shiro grimaced. "I'm a programmer and engineer," he said flatly. "I have no intentions of expanding my horizons, and to be honest I don't see the need. I'd do it for Lin because she's my aunt, and for myself for my work, but beyond that ..."
He shook his head.

"Mixing magic and technology is a completely different field, there are people who have done it, but that's their specialty, " Lin added, "Honestly, if people found out that Shiro has only been scratching the surface of what he's capable of doing people would not leave him alone, and already I'm sure people tend to not really leave you alone."
She added this wryly, in which she found Shiro's request completely reasonable. It was really only going to be used to contact people in the family, so that was fine.

"That's one of the reasons I want to be able to contact Gaia from here," Shiro admitted reluctantly to Lin. "To get away from some of it. I mean ... as fast as I work, I don't get a moment's rest at home. At least if I'm here, I can take my time and have time between projects. It's nice to get away from the rat race."
"Rat race?" Earendil looked confused again.

"It's a saying among Gaians, it means to work excessively for what seems to be little gain. To not get anywhere," Lin explained, "I'm assuming you're referring to specifically the fact you take on a lot of jobs to pay that electric bill for your personal work."
Really, if it weren't for the fact that Shiro had bills to pay, she was sure he would work on whatever he pleased, there was much more Shiro could do if he had the chance to work on things as he wished.

Shiro shrugged one shoulder. "Now that we've got the solar panel roofing, I'm not worried about that anymore," he replied. "Whatever I get now is profit. I just don't want to be constantly working, but on the other hand I don't want to have to turn people down, I feel bad when I do that."
Leave it to Shiro to have a guilty conscience where he didn't need to.

"Shiro....."
Lin blinked at him, Shiro was often so practical she would have thought he would have been more practical about what he accepted.
"If you had to turn a project down no one would fault you for it, you're in high demand and there are only so many hours in a normal Gaian day."
At this rate with his conscience he could possibly be one of the wealthiest Gaians in the city, or even the world.
