Baklava is of uncertain origin. Usually associated with Greece, as that is where it achieved its most mainstream proliferation, it is actually an import to Greece from the Byzantine era. Most culinary anthropologists lean towards a central turkic origin, which would match the distribution of similar layered breads throughout the Eastern mediterranean, caucasus, balkan, and non-penisular zones of the Asian middle east.
