Honestly, I support that and hope it does get passed.
It's saying that orphaned works, in otherwords, works released from copyright, are free to use, barring the original owner doesn't ask you to cease and desist.
Being a huge supporter of FOSS, Free and Open Source Software, I highly encourage sharing and releasing things into the public domain for others to utilize and make better through their own personal touch.
Of course, those of you who don't like this bill, if it is passed, essentially nothing really changes. Your copyright is still automatically applied upon creation, and if you see somebody using your work, you can still have them cease and desist, on a legal basis. The only way they'd be able to use your art without any worries at all is if you release the copyright and make no attempts to stop them.
Essentially, sharing is caring, and if you're upset about this, then you're too lazy to protect your artwork and shouldn't mind if it's used elsewhere.

I need to come up with a better way to make gold than buying daily chance items in the marketplace from people who sell them cheaper than the store sell-back price out of ignorance.

BridgeChan Care_e Jenannen I stayed up late watching I Am Ledgend and now I'm totally freaked out. gonk *shudders* that movie was freaky. I jumped, even screamed, a few times ^^; I loved it XD Of course, being the Horror fan I am. I sooooo love the part where: He has the mannequin friend and surprisingly it shows up in a different place. That whole scene had me thinking "Dude....is he flipping out THAT bad?? I know I would have done that sooner @_x;." And then to only find out that it was a trap that the "infected" setup, ahhh I was impressed X'D The biggest thing is that it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be... I also scare REALLY EASILY!!! I can't even go on those cheesy terror/horror rides at amusement parks w/o screaming my head off. rolleyes
Anyway, it's been a really busy week and next week looks like it'll be busy too. I feel so guilty that I haven't gotten any of my orders done, but I just haven't had the time. I've hardly even been online... and it looks like I need to be boppin' off agian. Hubby asked if I was ready to come out for dinner. biggrin

I'm sorry Alex, but I have to say that I personally totally and utterly disagree with you on that. Granted the idea of making works that have been in copyright limbo due to a deceased owner is understandable; but for living artists out there, the artists that had their work copyrighted about 30 years ago, will have to do it all over again and pay even more time and money. That original copyright becomes a clean slate and useless.
And if all works become open sourced, what use is it for many art jobs if a company knows they can find a "workable" free piece somewhere on the net instead of hiring an artist to make a perfect product? Jobs for artists' would plummet, making the term "starving artist" even more of a truth than just a quirky history lesson.
In all honesty, copyrighting all of ones work, alot of people having thousands and thousands of pieces, could be considered more of a hassle to some than just choosing to stop expressing themselves to avoid having false credit go to another. In essence this could kill alot of passion and drive in many to make art because this bill makes art more of a business asset than an expression of one's feelings and soul. I mean seriously, even a person's doodles and sketch books of ideas have to be copyrighted to have any safety if this bill is passed.
Granted all of this is purely and utterly my opinion on the matter, but being an artist my self, I'd hate to see someone taking my work and using it for a business billboard and never giving credit to me just because I never had the money or means to copyright it. If this goes into effect, all of my galleries online are getting deleted and never getting scanned in again, thats if I decide to draw anymore without burning my original just to keep it safe from possible profitable theft seekers.
I may be over reacting to this, but I don't feel I can act any other way about this as it stands currently.

I've been doing that off and on these past few weeks, lol. I've made about 60k in unused pieces that I've just hoarded over the past few years X'D

Granted the idea of making works that have been in copyright limbo due to a deceased owner is understandable; but for living artists out there, the artists that had their work copyrighted about 30 years ago, will have to do it all over again and pay even more time and money. That original copyright becomes a clean slate and useless. I don't remember reading that in the article. Where does it say that? A copyright is applied automatically and lasts until 70 years after death, so why would time or money need to be put into it at all? And why would the original be useless? Quote: And if all works become open sourced, what use is it for many art jobs if a company knows they can find a "workable" free piece somewhere on the net instead of hiring an artist to make a perfect product? Jobs for artists' would plummet, making the term "starving artist" even more of a truth than just a quirky history lesson. I don't think everything should be open sourced, not at all. However, there will always be jobs for artists, especially in the digital age, because people making games, novels, et cetera, always need very specific custom pieces, and hence they need to hire somebody. They also have to take into account the style and skill of piece they're requiring, and so that makes it even more specific and worth hiring an artist to complete. (Example, me with web design.) Quote: In all honesty, copyrighting all of ones work, alot of people having thousands and thousands of pieces, could be considered more of a hassle to some than just choosing to stop expressing themselves to avoid having false credit go to another. In essence this could kill alot of passion and drive in many to make art because this bill makes art more of a business asset than an expression of one's feelings and soul. I mean seriously, even a person's doodles and sketch books of ideas have to be copyrighted to have any safety if this bill is passed. Like I said, copyrights are free and automatic, so I'm not sure how this plays into it? Unless I read the article wrong and it's talking about requiring paying and filing papers for a copyright? If you could point that out, that'd be nice. <3 Quote: Granted all of this is purely and utterly my opinion on the matter, but being an artist my self, I'd hate to see someone taking my work and using it for a business billboard and never giving credit to me just because I never had the money or means to copyright it. If this goes into effect, all of my galleries online are getting deleted and never getting scanned in again, thats if I decide to draw anymore without burning my original just to keep it safe from possible profitable theft seekers. I'm an artist as well, with web design things, and despite having the copyright on my works, I fully expect people who come across them to take them, mangle them, and release them again, or sometimes release duplicates. Unless they're trying to resell my sites, the issue is probably trivial, and I would let it go. ^^ Edit: I just re-read the official documentation again, and there's no mention of private copyright registrations, or fees, or papers, or anybody losing their work, or anything. ^^ Basically, all it is, is allowing people to use other's work under the conditions that a) the artist released it from copyright, and b) they attempted to contact the artist and could not. If the person was using the work for a non-commercial project and you ask him to stop, he stops and that's that. If he's making money off of it and you ask him to stop, you can be compensated in royalties for past earnings the person made. I'm not sure why this is so big of an issue, as it's pretty much already the same. ^^ It's just giving a more firm definition to conditions in which somebody may use works not made by them.
