I think the main reason that playing online in SC IV isn't exactly an enjoyable experience is because the character roster is so unbalanced. Just look at Cervantes-based fighters, for example: How can you call a fast character that can teleport and fly all over the place, in possession of several power attacks fair? It's kind of dumb of the game creators to expect that people won't abuse that.
That's why I prefer games like DOA 4. As long as you know what you're doing, then guys who play cheaply just become irrelevant.

Unlocking achievements can make them available, as well as getting the items from the treasure chests in Tower of Lost Souls (Ascending and Descending).
Descending stops giving items at floor 45, 45 being the last one. It gives them every 5 floors for the most part.
