"Of course. I'd bet your trees do as well!" Dari agreed. "It's exciting to see new life form." He disappeared into the tent behind Toby. Someone had to talk to him before he ran out of things to do.
Lori nodded. "Everything got harder in winter down in the rath, then when we moved up to the surface it was even worse."

"They do," Reese agreed, smiling. It was nice to talk to someone interested in nature! Maybe he'd take Dari up on that offer to talk during the night.
"I liked the snow in New England," Maia said. "We got a little bit in Oregon, but it's ugly. It gets gross and gritty because of the sand." She watched Dari enter the tent. She was intending on leading Toby a little ways off to talk to him as soon as he left the tent.

"I've seen it snow twice in Arizona in all of my years," Lori said, trying to draw attention away from the men in the tent. "People went pretty crazy the first time."
There were hushed voices inside the tent and what sounded like a bit of a struggle.

"Really? I hope it happens again," Maia said. Snow in Arizona sounded lovely, if a bit impossible. She looked towards the tent again, looking concerned.
"I don't like snow," Reese made a face. "When it melts it turns everything into a mud puddle. And it floods the streams. I don't know why people seem to think it's so good for the environment." He shook his head.

"It's just a novelty out here. Any precipitation is good in Arizona, though. We've always got droughts," Lori said.
Toby came out of the tent, ignoring everyone, and walked off with a hand at his forehead. Dari emerged a few moments later. He looked to Lori and Maia and offered an apologetic smile.It had gone well, considering.

Reese nodded. "We have droughts here, but not close to my forest. I heard the developers talking about it. They're always complaining that back home they can hardly take a shower." He frowned. "That won't come here, will it? I don't want my forest turning yellow."
Maia hesitated for a moment before following after Toby.

"No, the climate won't change," Lori assured the guardian. He might have told Maia to stop were he not trying to keep Reese's attention.
Dari offered a smile. "Sorry about that. No, he's right. Nothing will change in your forest except for the temporary dwellings. We should have no problem breaking them up when the developers are gone."
Toby had stopped a decent way away, thumb and pointer finger spread across his forehead. He was clearly distressed.

"Oh, good," Reese smiled at Lori. Good. His trees wouldn't be without water. "I like predictability." He looked over his shoulder towards where Toby had gone. "Like that," he said, in a lowered voice. "I knew she was going to follow him. Just like birds." He shook his head. Twitterpated.
Maia stopped to stand beside Toby. "Love?" She began. "Are you alright?" She wrapped an arm around him.

"...yeah. That'll pass, hopefully," Lori said. "Well, not the relationship. The drama. It's hard for him."
Dari nodded.
Toby tensed under Maia's arms and wrenched away.
"Love, I'm fine."

"I'm sure it will," Reese assured Lori, and looked around for a distraction. "Why was he so shaken up about the tent, though? There aren't any bears in this part of my woods."
That caught Maia off guard. She let her arm drop to her side and nodded. "Right," she said. "What's wrong?"

"He had a bad experience camping once," Dari offered in short terms. Hopefully even a young-at-heart guardian would know not to ask any more, but then again he was fae. Who knew which way he rocked?
Toby laughed, looked to Maia, and furrowed his brows before releasing them. He'd told her, hadn't he? "If you weren't here it'd be fine."
Oh. s**t. He closed his eyes hard and sighed.
"That came out wrong. I mean we've never camped out before, you know? You can me."

Reese nodded in understanding. "He's afraid of a repeat, then." He looked around again, and then pointed in a direction. "Hey guys! I think I saw a snipe. Its a really rare bird that lives around here. Let's go see if we can find it." Never mind that the agents probably knew there was no such thing.
Oh... Maia's expression crumpled. "I could go get a room at the hotel," she offered.

Lori arched a brow and half-smiled. Dari laughed and shook his head.
"We need to finish setting up. You can help, if you like," Dari offered, "Or you can go do your own thing, we don't mind."
Toby narrowed his eyes at Maia. "We're on a job. This isn't recreation. We need you here."

"And you need to be able to focus on your job," Maia sighed. Reacreation? --No, she'd-- She hadn't meant to imply she wouldn't be working... "I'll go help the guys," she said, and turned away.

Dari clacked his teeth. Hmm...
"We'll make a factory line. You grab things from the bag, give them to Lori, and I'll be in the tent to put them away, alright?"
Toby nodded. Yes, he did. She was right there. Imagine the stories, though? Head agent can't spend night in forest protected by guardian. Jesus.
"No, no. Maia. C'mere." He took a deep breath and let it out. "I told you, right?"
