Dari accepted the taken hand, smiled, and nodded.
"For now, yes. We need to make our presence known for another day or two and then we can work on getting them out of here."
Toby piped up: "We could also camp out in the woods with you if you'd prefer."

"Really?" Reese smiled at Toby's words. "Yeah. I'd like that. You can come see my home. There's a stream that runs through near there." He released Dari's hand, and took Toby's. "You can camp there. No one else has ever been."

Toby smiled and nodded. "Sure. We'll have to bring our electronics out here, if you don't mind. That way we can keep in touch with HQ. It'd be easier for us to be as near as possible for the sake of the case." Nevermind the fact that he hated camping. This was different, though. He was the most dangerous thing here, and anyway it was for work.

Reese nodded. "That's fine." He said. He didn't mind them. "Do they all have robotic voices?" he asked.
"No," Maia assured him, kindly. "If we have time, I'll show you something on my computer." She'd never gone camping before! If it hadn't been for work, she would've looked forward to it.

"Alright, so we'll pack up at the hotel, check out early, and head out here. We'll still have to leave to eat and such but we can spend the majority of our time in here with you," Toby said. "We'll be back as fast as possible." He offered the guardian a smile.

Toby was being reminded of how much of their technology had to be concealed as something more modern and normal. Anything futuristic was as damning as catching Dari without his ring on. At least, it was in theory.
His hands were shaking as he helped pull the tent up with its multiple rooms. It was nothing like that tent, but it was clearly working at his nerves. Lori had offered to take over his spot, but the werewolf had just waved him away. So be it. He went back to setting up their wireless and cell signals.

Maia may not have put up a tent before, but she had witnessed unease in Toby. She knelt beside him and took his hand. "C'mon, love," she said, gesturing for him to stand. "Talk to me." She knew he'd gone camping before, with Carolyn. This must have been hard.
"Your tent is... Weird," Reese observed. He peered inside. "Its got more than one room. This is new! Last one I saw was pitched with sticks!"

Maia got the same treatment as Lori. Toby waved his hand at her and staked the post before moving on to the next.
"Yeah. We go on a lot of outdoor missions, so it's useful to have a tent big enough for a small team."

Maia frowned slightly, and didn't get up. She did take her hand back, though. She was concerned. She could tell Toby was unhappy and wanted to help.
"It's nice," Reese said, and smiled. "I've never used a tent," he added. "I don't really sleep, but I like relax there," he pointed up overhead. "That branch."

"Oh good, so we'll be right nearby," Toby said.
"I never had to sleep. I still don't," Dari said. "It's still fun to do it sometimes, to just drop out of consciousness and hallucinate for a few hours. If you need anyone during the night, feel free to come get me. These three need rest, but I don't."

"That's why I brought you here," Reese said. "No one's ever been this far into my forest. Just me and the animals." He looked to Dari then, and smiled. "Did you know trees sleep? In Winter. They stop growing then, and everything's silent. I don't like winter much." He always felt weaker during the colder months. "Alright. If anything happens I'll get you."

"Oh, well. Thank you, then." Toby stood and brushed his hands on his pants, then started filling up the tent with supplies. He needed to be strong. He needed to keep working or it might get him. If Maia hadn't been here it wouldn't have been so bad.
"I did, actually!" Dari chimed, "Does that affect you at all, for the trees to sleep?"

Maia stood and let out a breath. This reminded her of the night she'd found Toby baking pies at two am. Keeping busy was his way of dealing with stress, she knew. When keeping busy stopped working, that was when things got bad.
"Yeah. My powers don't work so well," Reese admitted. "And I feel all weird. Kind of... Groggy? Is that the word? Like bees are buzzing in my head. It's worst towards January. It gets colder and I start feeling it."

"That's very interesting," Dari replied. It was predictable, but interesting. If Reese was growing with the woods then it made sense that its seasons would match his. He was glad it wasn't winter. They might have had a much larger problem if Reese couldn't defend his forest as well as he had so far. They might have never known until the spring when people started dying.
Lori gave Maia a Look and then looked toward the tent where Toby worked busily, ignoring every glance. Was he going to be okay? He had never been like this while camping before. They'd done this before. She was the only outlier.

"I guess. I like spring and summer best. I feel the most alive then. And they're beautiful seasons. I live when the trees start to bloom. Even the ones that don't flower. The new green is my favorite."
Maia noted Lori's look and turned her attention to Dari and Reese. "My favorite season is spring, too," she said. "Where I used to live, winter was a really lonely time. Almost one came, and all the businesses on the beach were closed. It started livening up in Spring."
