A major influence on warfare that no-one ever thinks about is fashion. Who knows, perhaps sometime in the future running around with a sword will be a fashionable way of fighting again.

The lance is mightier than the stick, assuming the guy with the lance is stronger, smarter, and can emerge victorious, because the guy with the stick might be a martial arts master.
