Toby was fairly certain of his own climbing skills and would easily survive a fall, so without question he reached up and took the ancient boy's hand. He began onto the branch Reese stood upon and Dari watched him go.

Reese watched Toby climb, and shook his head. "Not like that," he said. He held onto Toby's hand, and looked to him. "It's teleporting," he said. "You can go with me. But your friends have to stay. I don't know if your extratressial friend would survive. He's not solid enough. Want to?"

"As long as you don't have me killed, sure." He stood on the branch and took Reese's hand again. "Where are we going?"
Dari looked down at himself. He'd probably survive, right? "We're going to have to meet you there."

"Killing is for humans," Reese said, then. He looked down to Dari. "Go west," He said. "About a thousand feet, and stop. Don't go any further than that, you'll get hurt." He phased with Toby, and they arrived at their destination. Several prickly climbing roses were there. "I don't know what you want me to show you," he said.

Toby shrugged. "We're here to hear whatever you want us to hear, and see what you want us to see. The case is pretty clear-cut from what I can see, and I've already got some ideas." He looked the roses up and down. Pretty.
"That way," Dari said, and headed due west, mentally counting the distance as they went. "He doesn't seem to like Toby much."
"Hopefully he didn't just throw him into a ravine," Lori replied.

"This' my favorite spot." Reese sat on the grass, and looked to Toby. "Ideas? Tell me. I've tried for hundreds of years to keep the humans out. They come in with guns, I scare them. They come in with axes, I scare them. For the most part, it worked. They'd spin tales about how my forest was haunted and no one ought to come. It stopped working recently." Whether recently meant within the last few months or the last one hundred years, it was hard to tell. "Lori says people have become ruled by money."
Maia sent a frown Lori's way. "Don't joke like that."

"It's beautiful," Toby said, and then turned to face Reese. He joined him on the grass.
"Well, now it's all a legal matter. The state said they own some portion of this land, so they think they do. It's pretty common for us to bluff and say a forest is home to some endangered animal, but that might not be enough for the locals. I figure if we can get the public involved it might be a little messier, but a little more successful."
Lori snickered. "He's going to be fine."

Reese seemed to consider Toby's words, before slowly nodding. "You think they'd help protect something?" he asked, doubtfully. "I guess that means I can't scare them?"
He looked around. "Do you really trust them to do the right thing?" he asked.

"The developers, no. The public... well. There are still people out there who care about nature. Besides, there could very well be some endangered animals in here for all we know." He looked around as if he might see one right then and shrugged. "I think keeping the developers out of the woods might require a bit more scaring, but not too much. Not as frequently as it seems to have been. Let them be afraid, but don't let them get angry. Definitely leave their foundations alone. When they're gone it won't be an issue to break them up.

Reese nodded. "Breaking their foundations doesn't seem to do much than get them to move. They say it's roots or something equally as ridiculous." He started to smile. So scaring wasn't completely out of the question. "Want to scare them with me?" he asked. "You and me, we're the scariest things in these woods."

"Oh, no. It'd be a bad idea for me to show up furry," Toby said, shaking his head, "You'll have to keep the scaring to a careful minimum, though. Only tangle people who are coming in with bad intent. You want to keep them scared, but not get them angry. If they get angry, they could rip up or burn this whole place, and nobody wants that.
"There they are," Dari said, breaking through the trees to meet up with Toby and Reese. He smiled and joined them on the grass.

Reese seemed to stop listening at the word burn. His eyes went wide, and his fists clutched until his knuckles were white."You won't let them burn my forest, will you?" He asked.
He looked up as Lori, Dari, and Maia arrived. "You finally found us!" He said, as if he'd doubted their ability.
Maia sat on the grass, studying the roses. "They're lovely," she said. "Did you plant these here?" They didn't look particularly wild. These were cared for.
"Yeah," Reese said.

"Where did you get them from?" Dari asked, looking up at the roses.

"Perfect. Look out for big groups too. Like search parties or scouts. Watch out for them," Toby said and nodded.
"... yes," Dari said, "Seeds from within or seeds from without? Rosa setigera. I had no idea they grew around here."
