Andarien flicked some water droplets from his toes. Without looking away from the water, he murmured, "I don't want to learn how to fight."
He stared at the reflection of the sun on his wet feet, then lowered his feet back into the water. He had stated his case quite simply - perhaps oversimplifying it a bit too much.

"Ah...." Triton nodded as he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, "May I ask why you don't want to learn?"
It really wasn't for everyone, Triton knew, but he wanted to double check as to why. Besides, the kid was pretty young. Provided Triton wasn't too off in his guess, Andarien was probably not even five physically yet.

Andarien sniffed and rubbed the back of one ear. "Because I'm terrible at it," he said miserably. "Nana and Ada tried to teach me but ... I can't do anything. I'm worse at that than languages. I can't do any of it at all!"
He felt a rage bubbling up inside of him, a rage he only felt when he was being pressured (or felt he was being pressured) about languages and physical training.
"They always say I have to do it!" he scowled. "And I have to learn how to fight, and I have to learn languages and ... and I just can't do it!"

"That does sound hard, went it's not easy it does take all the fun out of learning," Triton agreed.
He didn't quite understand what that was like, learning how to fight always came naturally to Triton, that was why he did what he did now.
"You're young though, it's alright if you don't get fighting right away..."
Though he might have to talk to Lin and ask her what they were teaching. Not that he didn't trust his sister, but she and Earendil were the same, they had no trouble learning how to fight. It was just something that came naturally to them, that and Lin had always been a stubborn child.
"Though, you know it might be, because you haven't quite found the right style," he finally added, "I don't know how much you heard, but there are many styles and methods to fight. Finding the right one helps a lot."

Andarien looked over at Triton at last, though it was far from a trusting look.
"You think ... there's something I could do?" he asked softly, almost suspiciously.
With all the failure he'd had he wasn't sure it was possible that there be anything at all that he could do.

Triton thought about it, "I'm pretty sure I can find something. If not, I can cobble something together that at least would leave you with some bit of self defense knowledge."
He peered down at the small boy.
"I'll try my best, all I ask is for you to keep an open mind," Triton told him quietly, "Your parents aren't doing this to upset you. They want you to stay safe and be able to keep yourself safe. That is why they insist on all these lessons."

Andarien looked up at his parents, who were waiting for him and Triton by the kitchen door. He was silent for several moments as he thought about what Triton had said. He wasn't sure how much he believed his uncle. Even if it did make sense that they wanted to keep him safe, how was it for his safety that they kept bringing up language lessons even now that he could speak - literally - any language at all?
"I'll come look," he agreed finally, though his tone made it clear that he didn't want to.

"That's all I ask," Triton smiled as he got up off the ground and dusted himself off.
He held out a hand to Andarien.
"Come on, it'll be fun. If for no other reason than the fact you'll get to see a number of things you wouldn't get to see otherwise."
Though Triton was not violent by nature, he was quite proud of his collection and the knowledge he himself had collected on the topic.

Andarien frowned doubtfully, but he took Triton's hand and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet. Without a word, he picked up his shoes and followed after his uncle back to where his parents were waiting.

"This way," Triton motioned cheerfully, "The dojo is on the other side of my home."
Not that it was far, the dojo took up most of Triton's home, just like the outside training ground took up most of his yard.

Earendil took Andarien's hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze as they followed after Triton, heading to his dojo. He didn't know what Triton had said to Andarien (well not exactly, his elven hearing had allowed him to hear bits and pieces of the conversation), but he was glad that Triton had managed to convince the boy to come with them willingly. He knew how stubborn Andarien could be, and he had no idea what to do when Andarien was in one of those moods.

The dojo was a plain wide open area with polished wood floorboards. In one corner was a pile of tumble mats in case they were needed. Triton slid the door open and led them in.
"Here we are," he stepped in, and checked to make sure Iris wasn't around.
He was going to lock the doors once everyone was in, just in case they decided to take live steel out, then he wouldn't have to worry about Iris getting in the middle. He wished he knew where she was, because then he could tell her to go play a game, which would keep her busy for a good long while.

Andarien looked around the dojo, taking stock of things that might not be so horrible for him.
"I wouldn't mind a training area like this," Earendil commented, his tone filled with awe. "All weather, all seasons ... perfect ..."
Andarien kicked at the floor, but that was the only indication of defiance that he showed.

Triton chuckled, "Almost, I can't use projectiles in here, of course. Things would get ruined."
His home wasn't made of concrete after all, if someone missed or put more strength than they realized into what they used, he would have a good size chunk in the wall.
"But for hand to hand and most other weaponry, this will do," he nodded as he locked the door leading into the dojo, and the door leading out into the training field.
Deciding it was better safe than sorry, he went and dragged out a few of his tumbling mats.
"Just for the hand to hand," he explained, "The mats are solid but I wouldn't use them for weapons unless they're wooden."
He threw down a few onto the floor, laying them out side to side.

"Do you have an archery range here?" Earendil asked, stepping out of the way so that Triton could set out the mats. "Or what other types of projectiles would you use?"
Andarien wandered over to one of the columns holding up the ceiling and sat next to it, crossing his ankles and hugging his knees to his chest.
