True, but I'm sure if the insects sense the user is in danger they will start eating the chakra, and they can go through a behavioral mutation to make this happen.

Well, thier bodies are small, so they would have a set amount that they could eat. Say they just ate their fill, they can't fill up any more, so for atleast a day you are succeptable to genjutsu.
I guess if you wanted you could make a custom insect for that purpose. I honestly wanted to make little white grub like insects for Medical jutsu catalysts. I think that would have been awesome.

Genjutsu affects the mind.
The reason "Kai" Works is because it is simply disconnecting the flow of chakra from the brain temporarily, thus releasing the genjutsu.
However, Higher Genjutsu doesn't necessarily affect the brain but it could affect the Optics, Taste buds, Hearing and touch seperately thus making "Kai" inaffective.

So shino hid in some bushes while Kakashi and naruto fought gurne, a crystal style user who pwned Shino by crystallizing all his insects. After about five good minutes, He made his swarm attack and she crystallized the whole thing, insect by insect. But this time he had forced the bugs to eat away at the crsytal and break free, adn then her entire crystal style was useless cuz teh bugz mutated and ate away at it like rust on metal... except they destroyed it.
