Earendil raised one eyebrow. "Sadism in humour?" he asked. "Dare I ask what you mean?"
He grinned at Lin. It wasn't often that he got to hear about her when she was younger during her time in her own world. So often the roles were reversed, and she got to hear about him when he was young. This was a rare opportunity for him.

Lin groaned as her father got a wicked grin on his face.
"You have to understand my cousin is clan head, so technically he doesn't train our future fighters. Though it is his right as a Lau clan head to choose to train a single person if they wish. It's often sudden and unexpected and kind of created this rumour that if you train on a day off the clan head will make you disappear."
Donovan laughed at that, because it was funny.
"Really the only reason why I think it seems like it happens, is because it allows the potential... ah.. trainee to show off what they have, and training on your so called day off is impressive. Anyhow... Lin decided since the trainees had the day off it would be a good time to use the training yard. So lo and behold Vincent happened to wander in, from what I managed to gather from Lin's mutterings about insane trainers and Vincent's offer. Apparently he decided he wanted to have an sudden spar, and didn't give Lin a choice in the matter. To say the least he was impressed."
"After giving me some nice black and blue spots," Lin muttered, "He didn't even give a warning."
"Yea well, that's Vincent for you, I wish I could have seen the look on your face when he told you to show up for training the next day right after landing you on your back."

"Clan head," Earendil mused. "So that's a sort of special training, since no one else gets it? Specialized, rather than general?"
He looked at Lin thoughtfully. That was something he hadn't known about her. Then again, the only things he could know about her were things that she had told him herself - he rarely saw anyone else from her family, after all.

"It's more than just the training," Donovan explained, "It's the education, clan heads are our leaders, they look after the family interests. So it can be as you said specialized training, such as sword fighting, but it's also expands to whatever the clan head thinks would be useful. Such as putting Lin into lady lessons and teaching her about how the other clans work and their ties to one another, or taking her to a social gathering...."
"I'm going to point this out now, that I really, really did not like those lessons," Lin tried to best to hide her embarrassment, "I especially didn't like the parties."
"Aww.. but Fluffy said you looked so cute in those pretty formal robes you had to wear."
Lin gave her father a sour look, "I hated those robes."
"He has pictures," Donovan smiled not caring that Lin found this utterly embarrassing, "I have a picture."

"Pictures?" Earendil grinned, looking like the cat that got the canary. "May I see?"
Not that he had particular interest in embarrassing Lin (which he knew he was doing), but simply because he had only once seen Lin wearing anything remotely "dressed up".

Not that Lin could blame Earendil, besides it was so much easier to blame her father because she was sure he was doing this to push buttons. It didn't help to know that it was working
"Dad!"
Donovan chuckled as he reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out his wallet. Flipping through it for a moment, in which if Lin hadn't been so embarrassed in the first place, she would have realized what a sap her father was. The rustle of something could be heard as he pulled out a glossy photograph and handed it to Earendil.
Sure enough, there was Lin dressed in what looked to be a blue and white Chinese robe, complete with intricate embroidery on the outer robes, flowing sleeves longer than her arms and she even somehow managed to get her short hair up so she could place hair sticks in them.
She wasn't standing alone, towering over her was a boy who looked to be her age. He had black hair and was obviously Asian in looks, but he was also obviously not human as the dog ears gave it away. He was dressed like a western gentleman.
"Why do you have that picture in your wallet?" Lin finally asked.
"To say that yes you are capable of dressing up if someone makes you?"

Earendil took the picture from Donovan, noting silently the strange feel of it, and looked at it closely. He couldn't see why Lin was so embarrassed ... she was beautiful. There was nothing to be embarrassed about there. With a start, he realized that he had never seen her with her hair up before, had always thought it too short for her to do so ...
He glanced up at her. Her hair was longer now, maybe she could ... but it wasn't his business. Not really. Much as he would have liked to say something about it.
He tapped the boy in the photograph. "Who is this?" he asked Lin, holding it out to show her who he meant.

"That's Kin Inutaisho," Lin murmured looking over at the picture of the two of them, "His uncle and him share the same birthday, his uncle had no children so Kin was his heir. He was very relieved when Blake came along."
Though there was still his father's portion to deal with but Lin was sure maybe Kin could convince his sister to take over if the unthinkable happened. Tradition be damned Kin wasn't so good in parties like that one.

"Blake?" Earendil looked back at the picture. He was curious about Lin's friends from her home world. She rarely spoke of them, and he knew very little of them. He tried to think back if she had ever mentioned Blake ... but nothing came to mind, at least nothing special.

"Blake is a Second who somehow ended up adopted by Kin's uncle Nikki," Lin murmured.
It wasn't a surprise for Lin at least that she didn't mention Blake because he was so young, still young really. She didn't know much about Blake except that he was stuck with the biggest womanizer for a father.

"Ah, I see," Earendil nodded. He wondered if perhaps he should give the picture back, and he took one final look at it before he passed it back to Donovan.
"And Lin," he added, smiling softly at her, "you really have no reason to be embarrassed about a picture like that. You should dress up more often, at least once in a while."

Taking back the picture Donovan chuckled as Earendil's words did nothing to stop the pinkness that graced her cheeks.
"There's not a point to dress up without good reason," Lin murmured.
To her dressing up was too troublesome really, even though she had dressed nicely before, she had never done anything that extreme except when she was made to.

"Any reason is a good reason if you want it to be," Earendil grinned at her. "Would you dress up for a party? A feast? A celebration of a return? Or any celebration?"
There were occasions enough if one looked for them. He had never mentioned such occasions to Lin, but he had an idea that he might be making some suggestions in the future. It could be fun.

"I'm not so sure..." Lin murmured.
She simply wasn't a dressy sort of person, even getting formal clothes for her was like pulling teeth and she knew it. Of course she was perfectly happy without any dress clothes.

Earendil chuckled. He would find some reason, someday.
"So what other times would you have for celebrations in your world?" Earendil asked curiously, leaning back in his chair again. "You've told me about Christmas and the Lunar New Year ... and then there was that celebration of the end of your training ..."
