[[Louis : Through The Looking Glass]]

From the outside, everyone watched as Kyle performed his spell, then promptly stepped into the black sphere, its surface pooling like water and just like that he was gone.

Kyle stepped right through the glass barrier, through the looking glass, and into a room. His feet felt the stone floor as he walked into the room through the wood frame. The click of his shoes were were the loudest noise in the peaceful room where the only sounds were the crackling of fire and the ticking of a clock. There was a small shuffling noise and the familiar hiss of a page being turned. The woman that Kyle could see from outside stood before him, blocking the view of the person sitting in the chair which sat at a diagonal angle to him.

Everything in the room remained the same, the only change was the sound from outside the dark window, a strong wind blowing with the pitter-patter of precipitation something against the window.

The woman looked at Kyle, eyes solemn and cold, but she nodded to him and stepped back with a boy, closing her eyes and retreating behind the chair.

The figure in the chair was unsurprisingly Louis. He was dressed in fine clothes, most noticeably a burgundy, suede vest with floral patterns etched in black and bordered in gold. The sleeves of his black button up shirt were rolled up to his elbows, a set of scars adorning his forearms... and while mostly covered by his neck tie and collar, one could spot black, bruised veins running up his neck from the back of his shoulder. The young man lifted his head from his book and looked over his shoulder to the woman, she knelt down and whispered something in the young man's ear.

At last he turned to look, at last making eye contact with his visitor, the edges of his eyes reddened, sore while even a small glimmer could be seen that could once have been tears clinging to the his eyes. His gaze widened for a moment as his lips parted in a voiceless breath, "Ajo-" his eyelids lowered slightly as his expression softened, then dropped entirely into an apathetic glare, "ah."

Louis closed his book and set it on the small table on the opposite side of his chair from Kyle, "Hello, Kyle," Louis picked the glasses up from his collar and put them over his eyes before looking to the woman and picking up a wine glass and sipping at it lightly, "Please, some music for our guest. Softly, I'm sure we've a lot to talk about."

Louis turned back to Kyle as the woman took a few steps away, making her way to a piano by the window.

[[BGM: Shadowlord ~Piano~ from NieR]]

"Well, it's good to see you." he said with a smile, rising the glass to Kyle, "I'm glad to see you're mostly unharmed, last we spoke... I think I was warning your friends that their actions might kill you, or at the very least, cause you immense harm. I'm glad to see I was wrong. Ah, but please, have a seat and get comfortable. Would you like something to drink? Wine? Tea? I'm sure you have a lot of questions. What exactly brings you here... you're earlier than I expected."

"He's fine," Ultima spoke up, keeping her eyes on the horned skeleton, her voice terse. "But if you're the praying type, go for it. Because when he makes it out alive, I'm probably going to kill him for not listening. Again."

{ Kyle : Through the Looking Glass }

Kyle's eyes took in the scene, from the black haired woman, to the fire, to Louis. And not just some amnesiac fragment, either, as it seemed this one knew him all too well. The beginning of his name even caused a stir in his chest, and he couldn't help but hide a chuckle.

"In their defense, I did tell them to do so," he replied, taking the offered seat adjacent to Louis, on the side away from where Kyle entered, and letting the 'expected' comment go for now; there were more pressing matters than his own predictability. "Nothing to drink, thank you."

"Whether it was your intent or not--and I'd wager it certainly wasn't--I'm here because the piece of yourself in Bobbi's heart has been causing some concerning side-effects," he explained, casually leaning back in the chair and appreciating the cushioning after the stressors of conflict. "I'd initially believed it a matter of desynchronization, but your conscious presence seems to imply otherwise. I don't suppose you could shed any light on that?"

The arcanist watched the flames wave in the fireplace intently, in his eyes as he lowered his gaze into a glare, "I'm not quite sure what you mean by piece of myself, but, I'm assuming you mean the spell I used to make contracts with each of you and open the door required for me to supply you with assistance and power when you needed it most."

A sigh, "I'd share what I know if I cared to," he took a sip of his wine, and proceeded with a vehement growl, "I don't."

"Tell me, Kyle," Louis rubbed his forearm, "Do you know where I got these?" he referred to the scars as he massaged over one of them, "Think real hard. It should come to you."

And here I'd hoped to be cordial.

"Louis, I don't remember where I got the majority of my own scars," he said, glancing at the man's arm before dully looking up into the other man's gaze for a brief moment; he seemed about as apathetic as the other man had been when he'd recognized the dragoon's actual identity. Afterward, he looked back at the flames, leaning one arm on the armrest and his head on that arm.

Instances in which Louis' arm got wounded that I would know about... Mateus battle? Got nothin', even if I cared. During his stay with us? Replicas at the castle, maybe... Oogie? Chaos? The Dutchman? Or maybe something to do with Ajora? Christ, as if my own memories weren't convoluted enough.

"Spill it," he said, keeping his gaze on the flames. "I'm sure it's relevant somehow."

"They're yours," Louis replied simply, sighing and leaning back in the chair, rolling his head back and watching the shadows dance on the wood ceiling, "Or should I say, would have been... had Kyla not stepped in. Foolish girl used her power to try and take your injuries and supplant them onto herself. Would have left her useless, incapable of fighting further... pair of snapped and bloodied limbs aren't easy to heal quickly, so... I took them instead."

Louis pushed his glasses up and rubbed his temples, "It was my fault really when I think about it. If I'd had more power, if I'd been smarter, been more clever, maybe I'd have been able to save you from getting hurt at all. Maybe I could have saved him too."

[Kyla: Bobbi’s Heart: station]

“Kyle!?” What was he doing?! The young man disappeared from the safety of her fluttering barrier and into the dark sphere- was he nuts?! Damnit it- not again! Not another strange chamber of darkness, why – oh- WHY did he insist on throwing himself right into the thick of such things like that??
There was no telling fi they could yank him back out again. ‘what was that again about NOT separating?!’

"Oh for petesake-!"

“He’s fine-“ Ultima spoke up answering the girl’s panic- Kyla turned to the summon who continued with her less then pleased tone of voice, asking them to give a prayer for when she dished out her own method of punishment for his behavior. Kyla honestly didn’t know whether to sympathize or worry even more.
She bit her bottom lip and looked down at her page, deciding to prepare in case something went wrong-“I'll start in my head- in the meantime..-does he have a plan B by any chance?”

"Plan B?" the angelic valkyrie repeated, amused. "This is Kyle we're talking about. He has plans into the Greek alphabet."

"Sure, most of them are variations of 'if obstacle, blow up'," she continued, thinking back even to her own summoning a few moments ago. "All the same, he's figured out that maybe risking his life brings Joseph's anger, and maybe it's just easier to avoid angering the mother hen. He wouldn't have gone ahead unless he was sure you lot would be safe, and he would be safe."

The only question is what assured him of this.

{ Kyle : Through the Looking Glass }

Kyle bit his lip; no need to show all his cards so soon.

"Ajora was damned from the moment he woke up the Sun-Cryst," Kyle said, doing his best not to trigger that particular memory again. "Perhaps sooner, when he took the manufacted nethicite into his own being. Who knows if they would have had such a hold on him before the cryst's awakening?"

"Regardless, there was nothing you could have done for him. You could have been infinitely smart, infinitely powerful, but his curiosity never did listen, as I'm sure you know from personal experience," he said, now thinking back to the moments when Ajora was in Louis' head. "But I doubt he needs saving."

"The problem, Louis, is that you're so preoccupied with helping us," he started, eying the fire and trying to form his sentence properly. He wouldn't, but it was the attempt that counted. "that you're completely disregarding what your help costs. You say you want to help, but for whatever reason, the 'help' you've given Bobbi is damaging her heart, or at the very least turning it into something she doesn't want and hurting her in the process."

"I'm well aware of the costs," his gaze was steely, direct, and final, "the only thing I'm not quite aware of is why I even care."

Another short sip, a swirl of liquid within the glass as his eyes followed the tiny whirlpool. The piano picked up slightly, but not by much, it was a pleasant sound, gentle and a little foreboding. Louis closed his eyes and listened, his breaths calming as fatigue seemed to trickle away from his face, only for him to continue and the tension around his eyes return, "Your friend, she scoffed at his death you know, took pleasure in watching Ajora suffer."

"In other words, she thought karma was being enacted upon him for the suffering he had caused others, and enjoyed it," he responded, taking note of the music, though doing little else. "It's a hypocrisy, yes, but humans are flawed, hypocritical creatures. I cannot judge her for the instinctive feelings that she cannot control."

"More to the point, however, is that if you didn't care about her being in pain, you'd be no better than her in that moment, would you?" he asked, the right side of his lips curling upward just so. "Or is that what this is all about? Teaching her a lesson. I mean, either you're doing it on purpose, or you've lost control, either or."

[[Louis : Through The Looking Glass]]

"Ah, my apologies. I didn't mean it that way. I meant, I don't know why I care, in that why I even worry about you or the others. After all, it's not like I was friends with any of you, yet I was willing to nearly kill myself at times to protect you. I endured so much pain for people who would despise me for little more than my use of darkness as a source of my power and a summon who couldn't control his desire for revenge. It all seems so pointless now and I can't quite fathom what came over me to go to such lengths."

Louis laughed, "But, to answer your question, if it's about teaching a lesson... hardly. I can't control the magic of my spell anymore. Something cut off my direct control awhile ago. Maybe it's what you said though, about karma. I can only provide support for my spell passively at this point by leaving the door open and sending power out in hopes it reached something. The rest is fueled by her own darkness, be whatever that is. If she happens to be suffering from that though, good riddance. Regardless of yours or her excuses, Ajora was the only person in this ******** up world who I considered truly my friend. No one else saw me as I truly was and accepted me as such. She and the rest of your pathetic band of hypocrites can burn for all I care. Whatever part of me that might have given a damn for your well being, at this point, was killed off a long time ago."

Louis finished his glass and placed it back on the table, the click against the hard wood surface against the glass sent a shift in the air, a flicker not unlike the one that the others had experienced before while Kyle was blinded by clarity, "Ah well, not that it matters."

{ Kyle : Through the Looking Glass }

Kyle's mood continued to sour as Louis spoke. Oh, they were at a crossroads, alright. And Christ, were his blinders on hard. Kyle had considered him at the very least a helpful ally, and he'd gone out of his way to save the guy at least once. None of them despised him for his use of darkness because, hello, Riku, and they didn't even know who his summon was--further, they didn't despise him for that so much as worry because his summon was an absolute douchesicle. Because ice.

Still... toward the end, Kyle couldn't help but grin again. And giggle.

And giggle a little louder.

"Ajora was the only person in this ******** up world who I considered truly my friend."

He outright broke into fits of high-pitched, uncontrollable laughter, switching from a cold giggle to outright cackling. He bent over himself, trying desperately to hold it back, that familiar laugh, his brown eyes watering, gleaming in the firelight--they were brown, weren't they? Perhaps they--no, it was simply a glint, a reflection of the golden-amber light of the flames, his eyes were definitely brown...

After a few moments of stifling himself, carefully pulling himself back in, regaining his composure, he caught his breath, sighing, relaxing again.

"Yes, I suppose you're right. Couldn't matter now," he said, oddly chipper for such a down conversation. "It is a comfort to know you're as hypocritical as the rest of us, though. Still, I knew you zealous, but certainly not blindly so. Are you truly so... cold?"

He stifled another soft laugh.

[[Louis : Through The Looking Glass]]

As Kyle laughed, and laughed, and giggled, chuckled, and laughed a bit more after some jabs at Louis' character. The boy simply stared at him with the same, apathetic glare, "You are more like him than you realize, though, still you fail to understand. But, if cold is what I am, cold was what I needed to be to do what needs to be done."

Louis laughed, himself, Kyle's chuckle a bit infectious, "It really doesn't matter does it? Your pain is nothing... and soon you'll all be free of it. The pain I cause you now, will only save you a lifetime of pain later."

The soft brush of fabric against fabric joined the piano as Louis stood, looking at Kyle, "I think, it was Ajora who once told me, maybe it wasn't, but, someone once said, Death is too sweet a release. One requires pain to appreciate the release true death brings," in the blink of an eye Louis was standing over Kyle, knee on the chair, body bend over his as his fingers closed over Kyle's throat, squeezing.

[[Cue: Prison Strip from Umineko No Naku Koro Ni]]

Kyle could feel pressure, but, it was a ghost pain, like the touch of a dream. He could breathe, his throat was fine, but the fingers were there. The world flickered and shifted violently, "Come, Kyle-" Louis bent down and stared at Kyle so closely all he could see was his crazed, haunted, pleading, desperate, infuriated, pained eyes that ignited within from a familiar, gut wrenching crimson.

The world shifted, he was no longer in the study, he was pressed against a pillar that lined a massive throne room. Bodies and blood lined every inch and cranny of the massive hall. No surface was spared, bodies even hung impaled on the ceiling. A familiar armored figure sat upon the throne while Louis held a rapier in one hand, Kyle's throat in the other as his feet dangled just above the floor, "YOU WON'T GET AWAY WITH THIS!"

Kyle felt a voice surge up from his own throat, coughing and gagging as the grip tightened, "SOMEONE WILL STOP YOU!"

Louis' mouth didn't move but he continued to speak, flashes of Louis' eyes dominating his view flashed and intruded his vision repeatedly, "-let's see how much pain you can endure. I'll kill you as many times as it takes. Over and over and over and ovER AND OVER AND OVER!!!~"

Kyle felt the dull pressure in his gut as the sword pierced his diaphragm and moved up, but no pain. Still he screamed, a voice not his own cried out in vein, "AHAHAHAHA! That's right, you'll die as many times as you need to till you're satisfied. It will make when you finally BEG for release from the pain, that I will grant you what you really desire. Don't give up too quickly on me though. I wouldn't want you to miss out! Wouldn't want to spoil your reward!"

All that filled Kyle's ears now was the insane, wild laughter that Louis spewed form as the the vision tore away and Kyle was jerked back out of Louis grip and thrown somewhere... else. He stood on a stain-glass platform, the mosaic an armored demon curled up with chains wrapping around his limbs with a giant metal collar clamped over his neck. Louis stood there at the center some distance from Kyle, behind him, a demon similar to the one in in the picture, an entire squad of them all surrounded the boy with the largest one in the back that gave off an entirely different feel from the others, "Die. Die. Die! DIE! DIE DIE DIE DIEDIEDIE- Come KYLE!!! AAAJOOOOORAAAA! LET'S NOT KEEP THE OTHERS WAITING! LET THE FINAL GAME BEGIN! HAHA- HAHAHAHAHAA! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!"

His laughter followed Kyle even as the platform ripped itself from beneath him and he flew backwards into the Abyss, through a wooden door frame, where at last he felt as though he was falling, wind ripping past him. Sparks and light zipped around him, converging violently on a single point, growing with intensity before snapping together with a boom. He could see some thing, in the dark, there- a light, a small, glowing shard of crystal, wrapped in darkness that threatened to devour it and snuff out the light forever.

{ ATE : The Bright Side : 59 }
{ Kyle : Through the Looking Glass }

'More than I realize'? Oh, poor thing.

Still, Kyle remained silent, simply watching with an amused expression as Louis stood before him. The host was quoting him one moment--Attempting, anyway, poor thing, poor thing--and the next, he had his hand to the dragoon's throat. But, oddly enough, Kyle simply remained amused. Smiling. Staring back, as though his curiosity were at least mildly piqued.

However, the scene played out as Louis intended, and Kyle was strung along, thrown here, held there, a voice not his own forming in his throat. The illusion was a fancy bit of work, to be sure, and perhaps under normal circumstances he'd have struggling for dear life like a panicking rabbit. Well, a panicking rabbit who could nuke things. Ah! A murderbunny with a holy hand grenade--dangerous. Regardless, these were not normal circumstances.

The armored form of Louis, sitting and watching a different Louis toy with him, was an interesting touch; Kyle couldn't help but ponder how far down Mateus' rabbit hole Louis had stupidly gone if he was so thoroughly split. The scene played on, and the puppet fulfilled his part, Louis raving around as though he were truly unleashing himself upon his guest--How rude--insisting that he would beg for death or something of the sort.

Again, under normal circumstances, Kyle had a feeling he'd have been freaking the ever-loving hell out. Being physically restricted was anything but his cup of tea; even a locked seatbelt usually made him instinctively struggle. But his heart remained cool.

Next thing he knew, he was on a spooky station, filled with the image of a demon, staring at Louis with his horde of similar-looking demons. Louis then started screaming again, both the dragoon's name and his counterpart's, and his laughter erupted as Kyle was swept away once more, like a magic carpet ride.

As Kyle floated downward into darkness, he couldn't help but be grateful for a more stable change of scenery, echoing cackling notwithstanding. And there...

Ah, here you are.

He propelled himself forward enough to gently grab the shard in both his hands, his form unfazed by darkness. The aura of light that had attached to him made itself visible once again, and as it did, it spread its warmth, around him, through him, into the shard. The light did not attempt to sear the darkness; rather, it tried to calm it, sooth it, and repel it. If it persisted, well then yes, the searing would commence.

More importantly, the circuits of Kyle's body became blindingly radiant instantly. He had made no mention or attempt, but the young man had been charging his magic the moment he stepped into metaphysical doorway, in the unlikely case that he would have truly needed to defend himself. He had been assured of his safety, but back-up was never a bad idea.

"Hey there, fella," he said, his tension calming, his smile soft but genuine. "Bobbi's been looking for you."

The fighter kicked around what was left of the skeleton he kicked. It seemed to be not...doing anything. Which was a little anti-climatic for him, but he did have an emotion other than disappointment. Anger, really, as Kyle just kinda went right into that damn orb. Ultima didn't seem too worried, mentioning killing the dragoon later. Of course, she might have caught a muttered "Not before I do..."

As he kicked the toe of his boots against the platform to get the bone dust off of his boots and pants, he listened to Kyla and Ultima, lightening up a little. If Kyle was taking him into consideration and actively wasn't trying to risk his life...maybe he wouldn't kill the dragoon. Only maim him. Out of care and worry , of course.

Still, they were outside and waiting. Which was never fun for the waiters.

Bobbi hardly knew what to make of the situation when Ultima yanked the skeledemon out of the dark sphere. That was kind of the opposite of where the archer wanted that thing to go. But still, the creature only laid on her stained glass mosaic and hissed, hardly posing much of a threat. Unless you counted being an unsightly blemish as a threat, at least.

She split her attention between the hissing pile of bones and Kyle, wondering what he was up to. When he stepped into the dark sphere, though, Bobbi sputtered for a moment before calling his name, loudly, sharply. Even she wasn't sure if it was an admonishing yelp as in "get back here before you get hurt, young man, you're grounded" or something more in keeping with fearing for her friend's life.

"Can I shoot him when you're done with him?" the brunette asked of Ultima through gritted teeth. "Please?"

I'm going to deck 'im. Swear to god, as soon as his stupid face comes out of that, I'm punching him right in the nose. It's my heart, dammit, if anyone should be taking stupid risks in it it should be me.

Not even Ultima mentioning how Kyle wouldn't have done this stupid thing without being sure everyone would be okay helped cool the archer's temper. She was still nearly sick with worry, fuming, and on the verge of panic. Although since now they were down to the waiting and Bone-Bro over there wasn't doing anything threatening except imitating an angry cat, she was starting to calm down.

Starting to.

She was still going to deck him.
