"A cat fairy?" Cody asked.
"He liked me best before I gave him sweets," Maia teased. "He came over before I knew how to cook, when I invited him the first time. He really likes cake now..." She shook her head and grinned.

"That sounds way cuter than it actually is," Toby replied.
Dari nodded. "He did always seem to like you." Then to Cody: "Alright, Love. Are you ready to go?"
"Oh, you're not staying the night?"
"Cody didn't bring anything."

"So does a fairy-horse, but I read stories about Kelpies," Cody grinned at Toby. Oh? Time to go? Cody looked to Dari. "Alright," He agreed. "If you two aren't busy tomorrow, you could come out with us."

"We'll see," Toby said with no real intention of going with the pair. They were going out to the country and they were going to tell Cody's parents about the engagement. Unless he and Maia were needed for moral support, Toby thought Dari should spend some time alone with his fiancee. "Have a good night, guys. Drive safe."
Peaches had fallen asleep on the couch.

When it was about noon the next day, instesd of heading straight for the fields; Cody suggested popping in on his mother to tell her the news. "I mean, she knew it was coming, but I think she'll be excited," he explained. "She's probably planning to keep us all day, so plan for a quick escape."
When they arrived, and Cody had parked, his expression fell. There were congratulatory balloons tied to the pillars on the porch. "...Maybe we ought to escape now. Before she sees us."

"Aww, did you already tell her?" Dari asked with disappointment when he saw the balloons. He turned to Cody though and saw the man had likely not. Did Hannah know her boy that well, or...? "Maybe someone had a baby? Or...someone else got engaged?"

"I told her I was thinking about it," he admitted. "Then..." He paused and watched as Hannah opened the front door to see who'd driven up.
"There you are, Cody! Hi Dari!" She smiled at the two of them. "Get inside, you two. There's ice cream cake."

Then? Then what? Had he told her they were coming? If he had, how had she gotten all of these people to come? He didn't remember there being this many cars the last time they came.
Dari raised his hand and smiled. "What's the occasion?" Not them, hopefully.

"I told her we were going to the park." Cody looked at the cars and groaned. "Dad's here. And my aunt." He sighed nd tried to shrink down in his seat.
"You two, silly. I didn't know when you might show up, so I didn't invite too many people--Cody, none of that. You'll come in and join us for ice cream."

"Oh...boy..." Dari kept grinning, though, and turned to Cody. "Love. Come on. It'll just be for a little while." He was being reassuring, but not really speaking his true beliefs. He'd pretend they had reservations or that he had been struck ill if they were asked to stay around too long.

Cody made a face, but got out of the car. He went to Dari's side and offered him his hand. "Lets get this over with," he muttered, and led Dari into the house.
A hand clapped down on Dari's shoulder. Cody's dad had been waiting for him. "Er," he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, "Hannah told me how you saved Cody's life. Anyway... I'm sorry for treating you the way I did."

Dari accepted Cody's hand and walked with him to the door. Reasonably enough, Dari tensed when Cody's father appeared to clap him on the shoulder. His eyes flickered narrow for just a moment. Was he supposed to believe this guy now? Hannah had let him back into the house, at least for now. Finally Dari smiled and nodded.
"It's alright," he said, "Totally understandable."

"No it's not," Cody frowned, looking between his father and Dari. He wrapped his arm around Dari's waist.
"Cody--" his began, and sighed. "I came to congratulate you two. I'm happy for you. When your mother told me what'd happened..." He hesitated, seeming to notice the still-there marks on Dari. "Well! There's cake. And Susan is waiting to see you."

Ah, a good near-death experience humbled any parent, it seemed. Dari just nodded and stroked Cody's back with a hand.
"Thank you," he said and nodded. He turned to Cody. Who was Susan?

Cody didn't have time to explain before a woman came into the hall and hugged Cody, and then Dari. "You must be Dari! Hannah told me how sweet you are!" Apparently this woman didn't share Cody's parents' concerns. She released Dari to study him. "Cody, I never knew you'd find such a good catch!" She looked over at her nephew.
Cody groaned. "Dari, this is my aunt. She's dad's sister."
