It wasn't until the park was definitely closed that they decided to leave. Cody hadn't forgotten Maia's invitation to stop by. When they'd made the slightly unsafe trip down the mountain and got into the car, he looked to Dari. "Your mom-mode wanted us to come over," He said. "We'd better."

Dari laughed. "Don't call her that! She's my... ... well legally she's my future sister-in-law but you should have seen her when we first met her. She was this sweet, naive little thing. I turned into a seal to make her feel more comfortable. ... We probably should, though. I told Toby we'd 'see them later.'"

"Hm, no. I'm pretty sure she's your mom-mode," Cody said, and grinned at Dari. "Was she? What changed?" He pulled out from the parking lot. "Yeah, I figured they'd send a search party if we didn't. When we get service, call and let them know we're on the way?"

"Oh, she's just more learned now. She doesn't like you because you made me cry," Dari laughed, "Alright, alright. Maybe she moms me a little. You just haven't seen her at her best. We didn't go to the engagement party because we wanted Annie to be able to swim. Maia was pretty happy there. Yeah, yeah, sure. I'll call them." He pulled out his phone to watch the bars.

"Did you teach her, too?" Cody asked. "See? She mom-moded just there. She doesn't like me because I made you cry. Sounds momish. My mom didn't like you, for ten seconds, for the same reason." He grinned and followed the road leading away from the mountain. "I'll have to come visit your place more often, then. Toby and I became friends."

"Yeah. She could speak English, but only write or read Gaelic."
The bars began to rise and Dari began dialing Maia's number by hand. He didn't have to, he just wanted to keep talking to Cody. "When I first got the ring she used to tell me to eat all the time. Even after I told her I still didn't feel hunger."
He held the phone to his ear and listened to it ring.
"Really? Good!"

"You must be a brilliant teacher," Cody observed with a smile. "Every time I see her she seems to be reading."
"That's what people do when they care about you, love. My mom does that. 'Have you eaten enough? Make sure you don't go past your knees in the water! Did you wear your street clothes to bed again?'" He grinned and shook his head. "You really don't? But you seem to." He looked concerned. "I know you feel pain in this form."
Maia picked up. "Dari, you're late!" she announced, But she didn't sound upset. "Hurry home, alright? I think Toby's eyeing what I made you guys. And Peaches was up looking at it too!" Her voice became muffled, as if she had set the phone down. "No, kitty. We don't climb up on the counter."

Dari shrugged. "It's easiest when it's an adult who can already speak the language."
He nodded then. "I know. She treats me like a child at times, but I find it more endearing than upsetting, and no, I don't feel hunger. I just enjoy eating. I have no sense of taste in my natural form either. Eating does make me physically larger and in need of purging, but it's worth it I think."
"Late? I didn't know we had a set time!" Dari said with a little laugh. "Oh no, Seamus has been getting to him, hasn't he? Alright, we'll be quick. Quick and safe." He felt need for that final assurance, especially considering their conversation before Maia had picked up.

"That makes sense," Cody said, smiling. "It's always exciting to see students enjoy what you've taught them."
"We did!" Maia said, but didn't specify. She was teasing. "Alright. We'll see you soon!"

When the couple reached the house, it became apparent that Toby hadn't been eying anything, as he was the one to open the door rather than sneaking a piece of whatever it was while Maia went to get it. In fact, he didn't seem to know he was supposed to be sneaky at all as he traded Dari's newly-charged phone for his own back.
"Hey, you two. Happy engagement," Toby said. "It's kind of crazy, don't you think? All six of us all at once."

Maia came out of the kitchen with a tray of fudge. It'd cooled and hardened fast, she must have had It in the fridge. "Dari!" she set the tray on the table and hugged him. "Congratulations!"

Dari grinned and hugged Maia back. "Thank you, Maia."
He looked to Cody. Would Cody get a hug too, or was he still on the selkie's shitlist?
Now Toby was eyeing the fudge.

Cody didn't get a hug. He did get handed a cat, though, after Maia had released Dari and noticed Peaches lurking by the table. "He's been trying to get into the fudge this whole time," She explained. She looked at Toby and smiled.
"See Dari, I told you he was eyeing it."

"Hm?" Toby had caught Maia looking and smiled. "Seamus is a bad influence on him." He took a square then and, after a thought, handed it to Dari, and then a second as well. Dari held one piece to Cody's mouth as Peaches lazily sniffed the bottom.Toby got Maia a piece as well, and only then took one for himself.

"At least he can't curse us for not giving it to him," she said, smiling. "Seamus isn't getting any, either," she added. "Don't tell him."
Cody smiled and took a bite of his fudge. "This is good!" he said, after swallowing. He looked to Maia and smiled. "Dari's being spoiled today. I have something to give you tomorrow. He says you haven't had marshmallow fluff."
