What was beneath the surface? Iden was beneath the surface. After all, he fell straight into the hole. Once he was free from the ringing, though, his senses began to recover as his eyes and ears began to regenerate.
When he hit the water, he sank. It was a simple equation. But at least he could see now.

*If only it was Iden alone down there and that was all Az had to fear.
Insitially, Iden would sink and the water up top would calm. Calm deceptively fast in fact....
Swiftly, ice started to cover the surface of the lake, spreaing in mere second to form a thin film, then taking a little longer to thicken and form a lid, traping Iden beneath, leaving Az staring down now at a hard surface into which his brother had just vanished.
Beneath the surface, something was moving in the deep black darkness of the deeper water. Tentacles glimmered in what little light there ws, and then a MASSIVE red eye opened, rotated, and focused on Iden*

THAT....was a sight that brought back the most horrifying and disturbing memories Iden had recently aquired.The ice didn't bother him. He could cleave through it easily enough. No, it was the tentacled eye. It looked familiar. Even if it wasn't the same thing as last red tentacled eye he dealt with...
The reaction was immediate, and violent.
Iden shot upwards. The spear was in his grips, manifested once more, and he was going at a deranged full fever pace straight upwards, pointy end of the lance first. That meant the ice would suffer something with the effect of a ballistic missile striking it, as Iden slammed into it. Then again. And again. The repeated hammerblows were wrought of utter panic and the need to tear his way free of the creature that had taken a grip upon his nightmares.

*Azrael was startled by the commotion and sensed his brother below, so he stomped hard on the growing icy film to shatter it, and dove into the water below. It took his eyes a few seconds to focus and he noticed the creature. He stared into the large red eye, attempting to analyse it, and hoping his eyes aura would have some effect.*

*Tentacles shot upwards, seeking to wrap around Iden's ankles and draw him down, the ice atop the lake reforming far too swiftly.
After Az's entry, the hole HE had come in through sealed as well, and furthe rtentacles reached up to claim him also.
The beast was hungry. Two meals looked good. The creature was mor eakin to a Beholder than a Kraken, revealed as more eyes opened on it to watch the pair above, but it did have the beak like mouth and tentacles of a squid, though if one cut the tentacles, it reacted like a hydra and simply grew two more VERY swiftly in its place.
It had the potential to use poison, but didnt seem to want to at teh minute as it coudl tell the men were clothed and it couldnt make contact. That seemed to indicate the beast was somewhat intelligent*

*Az was slightly concerned with Idens reaction, but more so with the creature itself. Pulling his white zanpaktou free its blade shattered, and petals whirled around him, creating an effect of a moving whirlpool. Keeping the hilt in his off hand he drew his black zanpaktou and swam toward the creature, his whirlpool of razor blades to keep him protected*

Nope.
All he could see was the stuff of his nightmares incarnated. And when the tentacles slithered around his ankles, something snapped.
The swing was slowed by the water, but the effect was the same. The blade whipped around, the business end of the spear twisting into the reaping blade of the Scythe, O-Kuni's favored form. And then he began hacking and slashing madly. The tentacles would lose their tips, at most. But that was sufficient to free his ankles.

*only the tentacles kept coming, didnt they? Kept respawning until there was more and more of them, didnt they? For every cut Iden made, two more tentacles to grab at him, reaching up for arms and torso also now, not caring what they grabbed, but wanting this fearful squirming thing for dinner. It was all kinds of tasty.
In the mean time, the same was happenig around Az as his blades sliced into the tentacles reaching for him. If they werent careful, the entire lake'd be filled with nothing by the heavy press of flesh tenacles, hemming them in until it didnt matter HOW many blades they had.
Eyes blinked up at Az as he came closer, the mouth opening to emit a cry that rumbled through the water, but the beast didnt back off*

Iden was not obliged to noticed. As before mentioned, he wasn't quite in control of himself. Anything that came close found itself slashed. There was little more to say, as he was rending and tearing nigh indiscriminately.

*Swimming closer still he gripped his black zanpaktou tightly*
BANKAI!
*Zabimaru transformed into it's final release, the naginata state, and Azrael thrust it at the creatures eye, the transformation letting off a huge release of reiatsu*

*Iden would soon be surrounded by more tentacles than he could humanly cut, and the beast was smart enough to grab his arms first, denying him the chance ot cut any further, more tentacles wrapping around the rest of his body after that, before slowly dragging him downwards.
Meanwhile, the creature blinked with its other many eyes as Azrael, as if he was a curiosity as he took out one of its eyes. It didnt seem bothered. In didnt seem in pain. And it wasnt. It just kept on reaching for him, letting itself get cut and generate more tentacles, knowing the eventually it woudl outweigh the man attacking it and be able to pull him in too*

If only it was air, and not water...he'd be screaming bloody murder in helpless rage. His restraints did not stop his struggles as he was being pulled down. The blade began to shift under his grip once again, and splintered into a smaller cluster of weapons...leaving a dirk, at largest, in Iden's hand. With a flick of his wrist, he began stabbing angrily. The force behind each thrust caused flesh to burst, as the daemon infused weapon transferred the malice of the wielder into the target, in the form of coherent ouch.

*again, the best didnt seem to notice, or feel pain, and just sent further tentacles up to restrain his arms, spread out at his sides, so he couldnt stab it anymore.
Something akin to confusion radiated in the creatures eyes. Why had these silly man thinsg come into its pool if they didnt expect to be food for it? Why were they fighting it? It was pointless. Hitting it was useless and they were only making things worse for themselves. What a waste of effort. He hoped it wouldnt spoil the flavour as it digested them. With the thought of food in its mind, ti opened its beak once more in anticipation. Save for the coarse edges of the beak, its mouth was just a pink mass of flesh - no teeth, nothing.*

Once Iden couldn't cut the creature, he would revert to a far more base means of fighting. Thrashing, biting, clawing...his fell strength was by and far a formidible thing. With raw panic giving an edge of his power, he was easily capable of uprooting limbs, perhaps even groups of them. It did not matter how he did it, he was refusing to give in. The violent thrashing would not cease.

<******** the creature even opened it's fleshy mouth Azrael decided enough was enough. He knew he could only use his mask for a short burst without Kagu's help, but a short burst was all it would take. Reaching to his hairline he pulled his hand down across his face, leaving his hollow mask to adorn it. The half white/half black mask with the rams horns opened it's boney mouth and roared, a dark and evil sound. With an explosion of reiatsu it was as if Azrael was no longer in water, and he charged straight at the beasts mouth with his Bankai. The force of this short concentrated blow should take him directly into the beast, through it's beak if needs be.*
