Target identification is my style.
I pick an enmy unit and use everything in my arsenal until it is totally wiped out.
Usually I accoplish this through short range fire, lots of it.
Broadsides are indespensible, though.
I have 3 hammerheads and 3 devilfish, but I rarely use them.
Woe be to the person who has to play my mechanized force...

Great to see another Tau player.

Excellent point.
Good, I won tourney with my Tau.
Anyone who says they are a bad army...well...
My motto in 40k.
An army is only as good as the player.
That is all that matters.

No kidding, I've seen superb armies go to waste at the hands of inexperienced (or just plain stupid) players.

Especially armies like Tau and Eldar...
Those armies need a certain degree of skill, at least more so then Marines or Chaos or Nids.

I use about the same strategy you do... or atleast, used to. Curruntly I'm being swamped so much I cant afford to let things get close in one piece. (normally completely eredicating units before moving on ends in squishy stuff getting to me in one piece, thereby destroying 2-3 units in closecombat before i can break off and shoot it)

That is what kroot are for, they hold up enemy nasties quite nicely.
Battlesuits are highly manuverable, so they can counter most threats also.
But, if you are being swamped with everything, you may end up winning because of the sheer sacrifice of your opponent, but just barely.
I hate it when players just charge right at me, that uses no strategy at all.

Yep, they can at least either A) Use cheap vehicals to block sight, thus save the squad from being shot up. B) Use cover to stay hidden and get those cover saves.

Yeah.
Most aren't that smart though
Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice one of your units so that the others survive.
Nowadays I am playing predominantly retreating battles, soo many players just charge madly.

What happens when you face a drop-pod space marine army though?

Play a mechanized army that way you can keep on the move and stay protected.
Remember, deep strikers can't charge on the turn they land, and they can't fire heavy weapons either.
Keep the troops safe in their Devilfish and deploy right after the enemy lands, firing point blank and killing as many as possible.
Use of plasma-rifle armed crisis suits helps also (i have a team with TL Plasma rifles).

A head on charge is called a blitzkreig(plz excuse my spelling). It is a tried tested & true tactic

is it true that their basic rifles have strenth 5?

Yeah they can convibably take down a wraithlord with their basic guns. Kinda scary really.
Definetely. Tau hurts...

Oh yeah one of the only armies who I don't think I can get into a ranged battle with. So that leaves my guardsmen one option a good old banzai charge.
Haven't played them yet though unfortunatly.

when i fought them i let my strom trooper soak up fire while i rained death with my battle cannon. After the wear wiped out them and they took out my sentinal my veterans took to the commander in CC and the russ minus battle cannon took out the fire warrior squad wire being fire upon by a hammerhead

Sounds like that Tau player failed to eliminate the threats in your army.
Why was he shooting at your Storm Troopers?
There are better, softer, jucier targets to kill, like Veterans and Command squads.
He failed at target identification and elimination.
