That's right. *Bard scans the shelves*

Oh, *Maggie says, not quite sure what to make of that. She lets it go for the moment, and focuses instead on helping him look for the book*

*Bard walks up and down the aisle, searching* I don't see it here...

*Maggie shakes her head, having found no trace of it, herself.* Perhaps it might be further back? *she suggests, wishing this place were a bit better organized. She's concerned she might be making a bother of herself over this as it is*

*As the walk further into the library, Bard squeezes her hand* Maybe we should find something else. I'm not sure we'll even find it here...
PostPosted: Mon Jan 02, 2006 5:36 pm

*Maggie squeezes his hand in return, and bites her lip, running her free hand along the spines of the books* Mayhap ye're right ... *she says, but then stops suddenly, looking closer at one book* Oh, wait . . !

*She releases Bard's hand to pull the book out, and brightens as she reads the title* The Tudor Rose, I think I've . . . oh . . *her expression shifts to one of disappointment as she reads the byline* It must be the wrong one, 'tis written by someone else ... *she starts to put it back*

*Bard looks at the book for a long moment, considering his options. At last he sighs*

*He reaches out and slips it from the shelf* Do you remember what Mo got me for Christmas?
PostPosted: Mon Jan 02, 2006 5:44 pm

Aye, *Maggie nods, remembering her confusion and feeling it all over again now* The . . . lipstick, ye called it?

Yes.. lipstick. *Bard flushes* In my time, women often paint their lips in order to enhance their beauty, and.. well....

*He shows her his picture on the book*
PostPosted: Mon Jan 02, 2006 6:10 pm

*Maggie just stares at the picture for a minute, not quite believing what she's seeing. She looks up at him, and then back. If she was confused before, she's doubly so now*

Bard . . *she finds her voice again, but the only thing that comes immediately to her mind is to ask* . . . Why are ye dressed as a woman . . ?

This might take a while to explain, but I do want to give you an explanation.... *Bard frowns slightly, fingering the book*

When I started writing, I wanted to write a book that I was proud of. Only first I started making money writing romance novels... love stories. There's money in writing romances, but not a lot of prestige. I wanted people to remember me for writing something great, not romances... and so, I started writing them under assumed names. And because most of the reads of romance novels are female, and most of the writers of romance novels are female. I started using female names.

*Maggie listens, and then nods her understanding. It strikes her as being a bit sad that he's not proud of the books he's written, but she stays silent on the matter for now and lets him continue his explanation*

None of my female pseudonyms ever made public appearance of course. And so readers were often eager to meet the reclusive Carol Ann Hastings or Wilhelmina Gibson. Mo used to joke that one day she'd get me to dress in drag and do a signing, and *he chuckles ruefully* I told her if she ever got me a million dollar advance, I'd do just that....

This... *he taps the photo* was supposed to be a joke.

*Maggie takes a moment to recall the rest of their exchange over Mo's gift* Seven figures ... *she murmers, remembering* Oh my, and she held you to it. *She's beginning to see the humor in this, but she bites her tongue against laughing. He must be embarrassed enough as it is*
