Barbaro--3  3-year-old colt's bid for Triple Crown was cut short in gruesome, heartbreakin' fashion when he suffered a life-threatenin' injury -- breakin' three bones above n' below his right rear ankle -- at start of Preakness Stakes. Most horses are put down in such situations, but Barbaro's owners spared nothin' to nurse him back to health n' he is on verge of leavin' hospital after seven months.

Billy Tubbs--71  1 of most colorful characters to ever coach men's college basketball, Tubbs compiled a 641-340 record over 31 seasons, n' won more games at Oklahoma (333) than any other hoops coach in Sooners' history. 2-time National Coach of Year also paced sidelines at Southwestern, Texas Christian n', most recently, Lamar, where he continues to serve as athletic director. Glacier Freeze John Chaney--74  A father figure to those he coached -- n' a hot-tempered terror to those who opposed him -- 2-time National Coach of Year took Temple to 17 NCAA Tournaments n' 5 regional finals durin' his 24 seasons with Temple Owls. Chaney was a good coach. Too bad he had to screw up his rep' by telling the UMass coach he was gonna "kick his a**" and threatened to kill him. Then by putting in Nehemiah Ingram just to make hard fouls on the St. John's players.

Here's part 3 Tie Domi--36  1 of last of a dyin' breed of enforcers, right-winger played 16 seasons for Rangers, Jets n', most notably, his beloved Maple Leafs, leavin' his knuckle marks on league n' leavin' as its 4th all-time leader in penalty minutes (3,515).

Willie Roaf--36  11-time All-Pro was chosen by Pro Football Hall of Fame voters as startin' left tackle for 1990s All-Decade Team. Roaf had a stellar career with New Orleans Saints n' Kansas City Chiefs.

Terry Labonte--50  1984 n' 1996 NASCAR points champion scaled back his schedule 2 years ago n' finally made last start of his 29-year career in November in his native Texas. The Ice Man -- or Texas Terry -- as he was called, made 848 starts n' won 22 races.

Dawn Staley--36  5-time WNBA All-Star guard (No. 5) finished her career with 2,226 points, 1,337 assists n' 537 rebounds over 6-plus seasons. She also was a fixture on U.S. Olympic teams, winnin' gold medals at Atlanta, Sydney n' Athens. She was chosen as U.S. flagbearer in Greece.

Fisher DeBerry--68  Among active coaches, only Joe Paterno (41 years at Penn State) n' Bobby Bowden (31 years at Florida State) had a longer tenure at a school than DeBerry, who retired in December as winningest coach in Air Force history. In 23 seasons he compiled a 169-107-1 record n' went 35-11 against Army n' Navy.

Joe Nieuwendyk--40  A fearless forward n' skilled face-off specialist who won Stanley Cups with Calgary (1989), Dallas (1999) n' New Jersey (2003), Nieuwendyk closed out his career 19th on all-time goal scorin' list (559). He won Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in 1999 n' an Olympic gold medal with Team Canada 3 years later.

Wayne Chrebet--32  A gutsy, undrafted 5-foot-10 receiver from tiny Hofstra University on Long Island (where the Jets train), Chrebet became team's 2nd all-time leadin' receiver durin' his 11-year-career, but was forced from sport after sufferin' at least 7 concussions.

Jamal Mashburn--33  4th player taken in 1993 NBA Draft n' career 19.1 points per game scorer, Mashburn was good when he wasn't hobbled. He missed 2004-05 because of an injured right knee n' spent followin' season on inactive list after havin' microfracture surgery on knee. When Philadelphia waived him last March, he retired after 11 seasons spent with 3 teams.

Marquis Grissom--38  2-time All-Star n' 4-time Gold Glove outfielder played for 6 teams in 17 years n' helped Atlanta Braves win 1995 World Series. He is 1 of only 6 players to amass 200 homers, 400 steals n' 2,000 hits.

Roy Keane--34  1 of most intimidatin' players in world soccer as well as 1 of Ireland's most decorated, Keane helped Manchester United win 7 league titles n' 4 FA Cups between 1993 n' 2005. He retired in June due to a hip injury.

Here's Cal Ripken Jr., Through Years  Cal Ripken Jr. won AL Rookie of Year award in 1982 n' followed that with a league MVP in '83. In 1991 he won MVP again as he posted career highs in home runs (34) n' RBIs (114) while battin' .323.

 At 6-feet-4, Ripken broke mold for shortstops n' paved way for future sluggin' shortstops such as Alex Rodriguez n' Nomar Garciaparra. Ripken won 2 Gold Gloves at shortstop, in 1991 n' 1992.
