was to be the center of civic pride in florence
gothic interior, pointed artch and ribbed vault, but it's not suporrted by outside things.

st. Francis Alterpiece 1235 tempera Italo Byzantine "maneria greca" (golden background but in the stories of his life, it starts to get a little more, with simple backgrounds and such.
st fransis is the subject (fransian order)
it tells about francis's life. He was a night that had a vision from god, and he humanized his church, a mandicant order.

a flemmish painter of the Gent Alterpiece in 1432 Yodicus Vyd Commisioned it's an oil painting (which has now started to be poupluar here) uniformity-the figures wide space-the landscape (detailed)
he also painted the virgin and child /w chancellor nicholas roulin in 1435-its' like the chancllor is having a vision of the other two. we see prospective in the tile and archest

well of moses 1395-1406 monastic order (carthusians ooooh) naturalistic, drapery is not formulatic!
and the tomb of philip the bold ( a duke i believe) 1415 morners, naturalistic detail, gothic tracery, a big leap forward in sculpture.

Jan Van Eych, St Barbra, unfinished, 1437, St Barbra was betrothed to a pegan and put in a tower cuz she wouldnt marry him. This just showed us the underwork of a painting. Alot of detail!
