[ATE: The Bright Side: 33]
[Joe: Bobbi's Heart: Station of Awakening]

The attacks seemed to be effective. The demon girl seemed to be rendered fairly useless, especially with Bobbi and Kyla piling on more things. As he went for another attack, he was distracted, the other shards of Louis putting on a little show, with a gunshot to punctuate it all.

The power boost from it, well up in Joe, and looking at how things were now...he didn't like where Louis was, considering his proximity to that orb...and where was Kyle? Did...did Louis...

Gritting his teeth, he kicked up, nailing the demon girl and launching her up into the air before charging at the 'corrupted shard', fist raised...and then shot out early, a blast of wind welling up behind Louis to launch him right at Joe. Whether or not it worked, Joe planned on keeping up with his plan of attack, screaming out a "YOU-" before reaching out to grab Louis, using any momentum possible to grab and begin to throw Louis over his shoulder, not directly across the platform, but to throw him into the platform and bounce him into the air, while also away from the orb.

And, of course, if it was successful, punctuating the bounce with a yell of "-a*****e!"

If she hadn't been so terrified deep down, and if she hadn't been focusing on the battle, Bobbi would have fist-pumped and cheered when the combined attacks effectively neutralized Penemuel. However, due to her last experience fighting Louis, she nocked another arrow and began charging it with her Piercing Icicle spell. She wouldn't be satisfied that the creature had been fully rendered harmless until it was dead and gone.

I won't believe she's dead until I burn the body myself and sow the ashes with salt, echoed a memory in the back of her mind. An oft-used phrase in some of her favorite books—particularly apt as the speaker was always referring to someone who reincarnated in some way, shape, or form.

When the two songs clashed and the world seemed to flicker and shift, Bobbi paused and looked up. Dangerous as Penemuel certainly was, she was also dumb and blind. Bobbi trusted to Joe and Kyla to keep the construct occupied for the brief second she planned to take to see what was going on with Kyle and the trio of Louis shards. She didn't notice Penemuel falling to the ground.

She stared in amazement as Kyla's Louis shard did… something. Bobbi didn't understand the magic at all, and the fight between the two was brief. As she felt her muscles—both physical and mystical—strengthen, she also felt a twinge in her heart. Her spell-arrow dissipated as she clenched a fist over her chest, hunching in on herself a little. Blue-gray eyes widened in knowing horror as she heard that hateful voice again.

"Our Hearts Are Connected."

"No they're NOT!"

As Joe attacked, Bobbi re-summoned her arrow, once again cloaking it in the Piercing Icicle spell to break through any shields Louis may have had up, and if none cause him Pain—but that wasn't all. Taking advantage of her Frenzied Fire ability, two more arrows were in the air, following on the fletchings of the first: a Flurry Bolt aimed to disable, utilizing her Precision Shot ability, and a Maelstrom Bolt aimed with Crippling Shot, Precision Shot's sister move. If the Piercing Icicle made it through, the others should as well, Blinding Louis and preventing him from casting magic inside the Maelstrom. Should either of the last two miss, one of them would—hopefully—prevent Louis from casting any more magic.

Only let them hit…

{ ATE : The Bright Side : 35 }
{ Kyle : Bobbi's Heart : Station }

The world around him was wavering, blending reality with emptiness, a state of flux, of motion, of dissolution--

--and yet, the world around him was fine.

It was him.

No better time than now.

He steadied his breathing and pulse, taking in what he could from Ultima's vision of his Louis shard. Yes, now was the time.

Inhale.

Exhale.

{ Cue : The Summoned ~ Crisis Core }

Without warning, Kyle suddenly burst from the abyss into which he'd fallen, vaulting skyward. His body was radiant; the flames had dissipated, but the light seemed to burn from within his flesh and bone, circuitry gleaming in the strange light of the station (however dim it had become). On his ascent, he doubtless passed through stream after stream of caustic magic, burning at his flesh, searing through his nerves, but he didn't falter.

At the peak of his jump, he summoned Gungnir, his swallow--enhanced by the acceptance of his duality--and held it in front of him vertically, the triple-tip above and the visceral rend below. His eyes were flaring a brilliant violet, no pupils or irises or sclera, but perhaps more prominently, the right side of his mouth was curled up in a smirk, teeth bared. Not a grin, nor a smile, and it certainly wasn't playful.

It was the sneer of a carnivore cornering its prey.

In a flurry of light, small runic circles, filled with layers of glyphs, began to appear around him, six, a dozen, twenty, all overlapping, within what felt like a brief second, until finally all that could be seen was a large sphere of golden light, like a burning sun.

And then that sun collapsed upon itself, imploding in a chorus of shattering glass, light visibly bursting from the glyphic surface inward, consuming Kyle in glaring flames of white, yellow, and bronze.

Then, a snap, like gunfire, as Kyle--now covered again in protective fire, now lacking his swallow--soared out from the inferno, launching across the station toward the void on the opposite end. He landed on his feet, sliding to a halt a couple meters from the ledge, staring up at the vortex, the source.

The inferno, on the other hand, began collapse further, further, slowly taking form, becoming humanoid, becoming tangible.

Two violet lights peered out of the white-bronze blaze.

The outermost layers of fire remained ignited as a form coalesced within, a swift creation that began with the tanned cerulean hue of her flesh as her essence was made corporeal, occurring simultaneously with the appearance of her radiant white dress that fell down to her calves, with a split between the legs just above the knees for mobility, the edges gilded with the golden geometric pattern.

Next, the addition of armor: a sleeveless chest plate engraved with her seal, identical to Kyle's, combined with an armored skirt that fell halfway down her thighs and pauldrons to cover her shoulders; fingerless gauntlets appeared, rising up to her elbows and flaring outward in the shape of small, feathered wings, followed by knee-high armored boots with wings at the heels; the set was completed with an open-faced helmet of a valkyrie, wings flaring back from the temples. The entire set was a deep bronze-gold, more orange than Kyle's armor but still glimmering with brilliance.

The final touch, of course, was the appearance of her six large wings, but this was perhaps the most startlingly changed: where once there were feathers of golden white, now there were gears; where once there was bone and sinew, now there was machinery.

It had happened within seconds; had people kept their eyes on Kyle instead, they would have missed the summoning, yet all the same, there she was: Ultima, the Clockwork Seraph, hovered above the tainted battlefield, her searing gaze taking in the station and its occupants, the swallow spear held casually in front of her.

She tensed, and suddenly purple light burst from one side of the three-tipped end; the eruption was wide where it originated and curved down toward the opposite end, thinning as it did--forming a menacing scythe.

The next moments were a blur, even for those enhanced by various powers.

First, the specter and Penemuel would have felt a small bit of health and mana drain away as tiny Lancet spheres siphoned from them to the angel above.

Then, in what could only be described as an instant, Ultima disappeared--and the sound of air rushing was deafened by the sound of hopefully-broken chains. The angel appeared behind the frost esper, her scythe having slashed only twice, once on either side of Shiva, to sever each set of chains like a knife through butter.

If that worked, she would catch Shiva in one arm, once more disappearing. This time, she would appear behind the group, safely on the station opposite Kyle and behind friendly lines. There, she would focus on carefully burning away the hooks lodged inside the esper, her magic doing no damage to Shiva, followed quickly by a total healing.

If the chain severing didn't work, then she would begin charging magic, hovering next to Shiva and preparing to free her one way or another.

"Louis, that final act is now," he thought toward the shard as he analyzed the vortex for any immediate signs of danger. "So do what you can to get over here. It's time to operate."

"Joe, I might need to take some mana from you," he sent over the charms. "Just a head's up. I'll let you know."

[[Louis/Penemuel/Kyla : Bobbi's Heart : Station of Awakening]]

Kyla, who stood back from the fighting and kept her eye on her surroundings, watched as Penemuel was launched skyward and continuously battered by her flight of blades. Shifting her attention to her shard of Louis, she could feel the tug on her heart as his determined glance met her own. The evil Louis standing atop Shiva fired a blast from his hands and as her shard blasted into the air kicking up a rage of winds that whipped around the girl, she was already working.

With quill in hand, pressing ink to paper, she instinctively swiped at the page inscribing the image she'd burned into her memory. In the seconds it took for the missile to careen across the empty space to the angelic Louis floating in the sky above, she finished and ripped her pen away from the page. Light spilling forth, like a blooming lotus from her book, the light shot like lightning to the angel and struck him spiraling around him, pen strokes swerving and spreading into the shape of a budding flower encasing the boy within.

The sphere of darkness impacted the shell of light. Expanding and engulfing all of its target within. Kyla could feel her mana draining away with each passing second, rapidly expelling whatever her heart could offer to feed the lotus shield, emphasized by the glow from her book shining like the sun. After the excruciating seconds that dragged on like ages, the orb of black cracked and broke away like the shell of an egg, her lotus shield shattering simultaneously, while the angel floated miraculously unharmed at the center as the mix of swirling shadow and glittering light fell around him.

----

Meanwhile, Kyle had reappeared and Ultima with him. They freed the unguarded Shiva, and Bobbi could once more feel her presence as her bod fell and dispersed into mana, flowing back to her master. The angelic Louis nodded to Kyle and then glanced to Kyla's shard, who nodded in an unspoken understanding. The beast leaped back and landed a few feet in front of Kyla, throwing his arms out and erecting a dome of faint light. He opened his mouth and he too began to sing.

[[BGM: Arrival of the Guards ~Zophiel~ from Drakengard 3]]

Without a word, Kyle's shard turned into a pure, golden light then shot off like a fireball into the sky that returned straight down into his host, "Ready!"

---

Louis, could do little else but cough up a clump of blood that showed through his fangs as he grinned at Joe. The boy did nothing to resist. His body thrown and smashed against the ground with a resounding crack and snap. Intercepted mid-flight by Bobbi's series of arrows, Louis was ripped from the air, thrown several yards and pinned to the ground with the stake of ice propping him up like a voodoo rag doll, to be pierced immediately after by several more arrows.

Somehow, the boy still lived. With labored breaths he pulled himself from the largest of the icicles, limbs barely functional, still he gripped and pulled himself forward till he reached the tip and his weight snapped him free. He fell to the floor with a thud.

"They're... not?" he sputtered, gripping one of the shafts piercing his arm, pulling it free and spilling black from his veins, "are... we no longer friends?"

The boy attempted to stand, but collapsed as his legs had no more strength, "But... I promised..." he coughed, more black mixed with red, his entire torso stained by the rain and the puddles, "I promised I'd protect you."

Louis reached out feebly, his eyes locked on Penemuel who had fallen to the floor on the opposite end of the platform. She was motionless and burning as her darkness dispersed slowly. He dragged himself once with his free arm, "Does this mean... the games are over?"

"Is... it finally over?" their opponent spoke once more, the bags under his eyes pronounced even against the pitch black nature of his eyes. His breaths were weaker now as he pulled himself once more across the floor, the sloshing and slick sound of his worthless legs dragged behind echoing louder than his soft voice, "Bobbi-nee, everything... it's so bright. So very bright... it hurts... will... you make it stop?"

Penemuel's body floated up and broke apart, darkness flowing up into the sky.

"No... not like this... it.. can't end like this," Louis collapsed, one arm still outstretched to Penemuel as he lay face down on the floor, "I promised..." his voice lingered, "I...promi-"

Then there was silence. The boy no longer spoke, the voice from beyond the void no longer sung. Even Kyla's shard had gone silent, though his instinct told him to keep his shield up around Kyla and himself anyway.

Bobbi, could feel the stab in her chest once more, it wasn't over. She knew this, she'd experienced it before.

[[BGM: Ashes of Dreams ~New~ from NieR]]

The voice returned, only this time, singing a very different, sad song. Louis' body decayed. Black flames burning off of him as flesh and muscle peeled away from bone leaving only a skeleton covered in oily darkness in its place.

From the vortex closest to Joe, a skeletal claw reached out and gripped the surface of the sphere. With labored tugs, a face, a demonic horned and fanged skull emerged with a hiss and screech.

"Kyle!" his shard shouted, "Whatever it is you've got planned, do it now!"

((OOC: Couple things I wanted to note. First, for curiosity's sake, Kyla's shard's song is subtitled Zophiel, also known as the angel of Art and Beauty. Second, I realize there's a lot in this post, there was a lot to address, some of it is backtracking to things that happened and I sincerely apologize for its lengthiness. Third, also for curiosity's sake, the song started at the end of the post, is the same song who's lyrics were used at the beginning of the ATE. Lastly, Kyla was GMed as it has been 2 weeks since her last post.))

[ATE: The Bright Side: 37]
[Joe: Bobbi's Heart: Station of Awakening]

Kyle freed Shiva while Louis got pummeled by attacks, and Joe couldn't hide his grin as he realized Kyle was alright. Of course, it only was there for a moment before he returned to his neutral face. Fight wasn't over, after all. And right when Kyle mentioned possibly needing MP, Joe's mind went to work. If Kyle needed MP, and he knew he could technically give it to him...couldn't he do it without needing extra stuff? Wasn't there someone who could do something like? And he always had a surplus of mana, it seemed.

The fighter raised a hand, the sparkle of energy filling it up as he lobbed a 'ball' of magical energy in Kyle's direction, the energy washing over the dragoon and healing some of the dragoon's MP as Joe literally gave him a chunk of the fighter's own MP.

Joe rolled his eyes as Louis spoke through his injuries. Mind, his body was still tensed up for an attack. And, 'lo and behold, once the talking was done, cut short by 'death', did a skeleton appear. Well, two, which made Joe shake his head.

"Nope."

The fighter was suddenly up in the air, having jumped, staff and foot glowing with Light. He threw his staff at the skeleton coming out of the orb, aiming for the giant, horny skull, and delivered a Flying Ax Kick to the smaller skeleton that lay on the ground.

After all, leaving something like that around when dying? Not usually a staple of most scenarios in this world, he wagered, and likely dangerous to keep lying around.

Relief flooded through her as Kyle succeeded in freeing Shiva from her chains. Still, Bobbi kept her eyes trained on Louis as he spoke, expecting his injuries to be a ruse. His words to her were like punches to the gut, not because she felt guilt at them, but because they were reminders of the person she had thought Louis was.

"We were never friends, Louis," she said softly. "Only allies."

But we could have been. Maybe we still can be. But not like this.

If you truly wanted to protect me, none of this would have happened.

Part of her wanted to cry. She'd never wanted to hurt anyone—in fact, she'd promised Louis that she would protect him. She honestly didn't remember the promise going both ways. Part of her felt like she'd broken that promise, but she had other, larger promises to keep as well. All of those promises required her to remain whole, unbroken, strong. She couldn't allow herself to be overtaken by the pale shade of a boy she'd barely met, or her heart to be overshadowed by the darkness he'd inadvertently brought with him.

And then she felt the stab in her heart.

Bobbi gasped, eyes widening as she looked around. She saw the skeletal being emerging near Joe—too close, too close.

"No!"

She flung out one hand, erecting a Mirror Wall between the emerging demon and Joe, just as the latter rocketed off to attack the skeleton Louis had left behind. This creature had been the last thing she'd seen before Shiva had thrown her out last time. She had no idea what it was capable of, what it would do, anything.

{ ATE : The Bright Side : 39 }
{ Kyle : Bobbi's Heart : Station }

With Shiva's immediate disappearance, Ultima was left with little to do besides Lancet away what little mana and life force she could from the two enemies.

Of course, that's when things began to progress.

"Ready!"

As soon as his shard rejoined his heart, Kyle began harnessing his light aura, attempting to focus it into something malleable. He needed to feel the vortex and his own Louis. His shard had once been one of these vortexes, a fragment enveloped in malignancy, and here was another example. If this tainted source had another similar shard, then they'd have two things in common: they were both part of Louis, but more importantly, they were both innately light. If he could just get a lock on that essence, on that same feeling--

"Kyle! Whatever it is you've got planned, do it now!"

His mind wrack, his attention wavered, the weave of thought unraveled, no no no--

Oh really no see I was thinking maybe I could take a spa day and WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK I'M TRYING TO DO

A mental throat-clearing could be heard by both of them. A moment later, Ultima rushed the ground, slamming it with the visceral-end of her scythe. The slam created a shockwave of temporal energy that washed over her and her allies, imbuing them all with Haste.

Focus.

Kyle tried to mitigate his immediate frustration--he knew Louis had only been trying to help. They'd just have to talk about backseat driving later.

He started over, his focus accelerated; he remembered where he was, so getting there was faster, but it was still a matter of getting there. More importantly...

"I'm losing my senses again."

Muttering the spell under his breath, Kyle's eyes began to glow green as Clarity once more kicked in, and he reached out his hands toward the vortex. Auras of light began slowly extending from his arms like extensions of his being, which began to tentatively make their way to the source of the corruption.

Ultima?

The Angel of Ends once more disappeared in a blur of forward motion, completely beyond the human eye, and reappeared in the air, even with the vortex...

... with her scythe lodged into the skull, having been raised vertically; the blade entered from the hollow bottom of the chin and rent its way upward, hooking the skull from underneath, the energy blade poking out of the forehead.

She sneered, a more powerful Lancet Strike, to the full power of her magic, kicking in so long as the blade touched the skull.

"You're in the way."

With a burst of inhuman strength, she twisted around, pulling the scythe over her head, and began to pull the creature out of the vortex, using her shoulder as a fulcrum in her attempt to rip the demon out and throw it over her shoulder down onto the station. Of course, for every action it resisted and remained hooked to her blade, Lancet Strike was pulling mana and life force into Kyle's form at an accelerated rate.

Regardless of her success, the skeleton's mere presence had provided the opportunity he needed--it was just that its removal would provide one even greater.

With the skeleton distracted one way or another, Kyle pushed his advantage--and the light extensions rushed toward the vortex. It was easy enough to find the opening, now that the skeleton had showed its ugly head (hahafocus). He just had to worm his way into the core, using his Clarity, his bond with Louis, and the presence of Light to draw out the shard within. He just had to focus on that feeling...

I know you.

Kyle felt... weird. Even his shard would have felt a faint pulse, emanating from somewhere deep in Kyle's heart. Kyle couldn't place it, but it felt... familiar.

The golden-white light extensions became brighter, more white now than gold. As the light reached into the darkness, it would not have burned away at the shadows; rather, this light was soothing. Soothing, but determined, the light pressed onward, unyielding but without harm... and Kyle could feel something within. His extensions weren't simply reaching--they were guiding him, like a compass pointing north.

Come on...

As Kyle worked his way into the vortex, Ultima kept her attention on the skeleton. If it didn't budge, fine: she'd just keep it on lockdown and constantly drain every ounce of mana and health it had. And of course, any attempt at return fire would simply be met with holy flame.

If it did budge, and went careening into the station as she'd hoped? Well, all the better; she'd start assaulting it from every direction, attack after attack, all imbued with Lancet Strike. And with the addition of Haste and the boost of the feral Louis' singing, well, Kyle would be brimming with mana in no time at all.

And then the fun can begin.

{Kyla .:. Bobbi's Heart .:. Station of Awakening}

The battles over arcing symphony , was incredible, even in its most horrifying acts-

Kyla felt something inside her tremble, and as she watched the piece of Louis lay on the floor in a pile of burning dissipating bone and flesh and blood, she knew it couldn’t possibly be over. Proved correct as a skeletal claw reached out and hissed by Joe. Kyla tensed and Kyle’s shard cried out- NOW was the time, it HAD to come to end now-

“Back OFF!” she too launched a Birn Strike, lvl 2 at the skeleton, it streaked in a large wide arc- coming back around to join Joe’s staff to land a blow- there was no way Kyla would let any lingering surprises remain either. Whatever Kyle had planned couldn’t be interrupted!

After That Ultima had it in her own personal choke hold-

“I’m losing my Senses again.” She heard Kyle say-

“Good luck.”
She said like a reflex, and decided to be more safe than sorry. She scribbled more, this time a large spiraling pattern of shapes which manifested out of the air like circling lights of her own, they swirled like a gathering blizzard but then took shape into tiny bird sized forms of her birn strike- a large flock, a flurry storm of them which she sent away from her to encircle around Kyle as a last protective barrier incase anything else decided to pop out anywhere else. If the Skeleton did move though, she could direct the flock at a new target. Now they had to wait- however long…

[Kyla: Disney Castle : Kyla's Station of Awakening]

Facing The Truth

Welp, least she knew wasn’t crazy- Crying- yes, it was wasn’t it?
“I think so…” she replied giving a soft and to the archer as she walked around the turning chamber again in search of the source. The answer so simple why she didn’t see anything- it wasn’t coming from the lotus- no, once she was in the right spot she could have sworn she felt the source change direction.

Like a soft breeze, something passed over her shoulder- and she turned back towards the rest of her station’s surface.
There!
Right on the edge of a distance edge right ahead of her there was something huddled in the darkest shadowed space, the dim illumination made it hard to see till a small floating mote of light drifted by it and the edge of a shoulder could be seen. There was someone else here with them!

For a moment Kyla was almost afraid, she didn’t recognize this being consciously. It wasn’t Carbuncle- it wasn’t Louis either. “…you guys..?” Kyla’s voice sounded nervous, and she took a step towards the figure.

If they drew closer they’d see what appeared to be a small person. Much smaller than they were, less than half their size. It was the source of the weeping sounds- or rather-‘she’ was. With her back facing them, a small girl was crying, holding herself in a tight ball, her head tucked behind the tops of her knees. From behind she seemed so shake in place and the closer they got the more mournful they discovered the sobbing to be.

“…who is.” Kyla trailed off- the more she drew closer however the more Kyla began to recognize the figure. Just before she could call out again, Carbuncle leaped out of thin air, rushing past Kyla and onward towards the figure.

“Carbuncle?” Kyla asked confused- as the summon seemed to see to the child, first rubbing along the girls back like a friendly cat, and curling around her legs till she pawed at the child’s side to try and get the little girls attention. Carbuncle acted very friendly, very comforting, as if she knew this person very well.
Kyla didn’t come any closer the moment she could see more detailing on the girls clothes. From behind she appeared to eb wearing a simple slip dress, but it was crinkled, and dirty in some places. From where she could see her shoulders- Kyla could make out something wrapped around the girls arms and around the back of her head.
Gauze?

Was she hurt? Was that why she was crying? “Carbuncle? ..is …she..a-alright?”

Carbuncles eyes snapped so fast to Kyla it made the artist startle. The summon said nothing, as if begging the answer to the question- from the person to asked it. Then turned away the creature pawed at the girl again, still not saying anything. Eventually the girl's cries waned a little, her body shifted in the dark and Kyla could tell she raised her little head to look at the creature at her side.

A tiny hand reached out with shaky fingers, some wrapped in Band-Aids or strips of cloth. Those damaged fingers went behind an ear of the summon and scratched her gently. Carbuncle responded immediately, arcing her head into the child’s hand. Shifting on the ground the girl shimmied closer to Carbuncle and continues d to pet her leaning in as if seeking warmth.
Something about this disturbed Kyla more then she liked to admit, and she hugged her book to her front, fingers tightening along the edges of her book. Seeing this scene, this sight from this perspective, like an observer… no wonder she didn’t recognize it-

“- Tyue. You found me, again.Thank you.”

The child’s voice was so soft, and frail sounding, it crackled in places like it hurt to even speak.

“I never left you- so it's easy to find you-” Carbuncle replied as a gentle reminder. “-Kai.”

{ATE .:. The Bright Side .:. 41}
[[Kyle's Shard : Bobbi's Heart : Station of Awakening]]

The skeleton on the floor crumbled effortlessly beneath Joe's merciless attack, though the strike against the skull protruding from the vortex did little but ricochet off and cause it to hiss indiscriminately. Even as Kyla blasted it with her own spell, the demonic face only rolled back into the slick, oily surface and re-emerge. Ultima finally swooped in on her own and drove her blade through the skull. The demon's face did nothing, though its eye sockets filled in with more black, oily darkness... to the brim before bubbling up and forming two onyx spheres... spheres that split down the middle and parted with a scarlet glow... two snake like slits dotted in the very middle by a tiny green ring filled with a yellow core.

The demon was pulled and thrown from the vortex to the ground well behind Kyle. The skeleton, covered in strange, sharp spines and thorns couldn't move, it simply hissed there for a moment as the blood on the floor seemed to vibrate and ripple. The platform was shaking. The skies, red lightning and blood rain ceased but were replaced by a thunderous rumble.

Kyle, deeply engrossed in his own work and unable to perceive the world outside his clarity, saw a very different picture play out. As the demon was pulled free of the vortex and what could only be described as a waterfall of blood followed in its wake, spilling onto the ground a few feet in from of the dragoon, Kyle saw what could best be described as a flower blooming. The dark, tumor-esk mass before him, ripped asunder, petals parting and splitting over and over revealing layer upon layer of more darkness outlined in various shades of purples, blues, greens, and reds like a bruise.

As each petal reached the edge and fell all around the young man. As the pedals cleared away, soon, nothing remained but a singly, stone-esk ring that spun slowly in the air, easily the size of a fully grown man. His spells and tendrils of light coiled around the ring and seemed to burn away the remaining tumorous material clinging to the edges and widen its opening. The ring sank down to Kyle's level and floated before him, only a foot or two away, just within arms reach. As his light toiled away at trying to pierce the invisible barrier, he could see something inside, the tiniest glimmer in the darkness... it was hard to tell, but it could have been several yards in... but for some reason his light couldn't pierce the border of the ring to reach it.

To those outside Kyle's vision, the demonic skeleton lay lifeless, and Kyle worked without interruption. The vortex, shifted and moved. It sank down to Kyle as though pulled to him by the extensions of light. Despite its menacing form and eyes that shifted about discordantly and separately of one another, it seemed helpless to move without the tendons and muscle required to move.

"Kyle," the boy's shard spoke up mentally to his host, "I... think I hear something. It's like... someone's crying. It's coming from inside this thing."

Ultima descended with fiery conviction, ready to begin her assault on the skeleton... only to be stopped by its lack of movement. She hesitated a few meters away, her feet gently touching the ground between the skeleton and Kyle, her scythe still in her grip. After a few seconds of nothing, she relaxed just slightly, her arms falling a few inches to rest but her hands still wrapped around the weapon; she stared at the entity, as if daring it to do anything besides remain still. Her gold-bronze wings flexed before the tension slipped away, allowing them to droop out of use.

Kyle watched, overcome by at least a little morbid curiosity, as the darkness peeled away, layer after layer of shaded hue falling at his feet. Still, the light kept digging, kept pushing, kept searching--he felt as if he were running, but the light was running too, side by side, or perhaps even pulling him along.

As the ring began to reveal itself, Kyle grew hesitant. The light spun and wove around it, enshrouding it in a glowing veil of warmth, but it seemed unable to go further. Though it continued to probe, seeking the light within, Kyle wasn't sure what to do. For all his bravado, he'd expected something simpler--a literal glowing shard, or a shining ghost in chains, or... well, something obvious. This was Kingdom Hearts, most things were simple.

His personal shard spoke to him, and what he said was reassuring, but it didn't help Kyle figure out what he needed to do next. Was the ring a protective shell, or a prison? He didn't want to apply force--the entire goal was to save the shard without shattering it, because there was no telling if the Cornerstone would just deus-ex-machina another one back into one piece. He hardly understood what happened before.

Yet still, the light held it close. Kyle wouldn't touch it physically, but the light wanted it covered--wanted it safe. Indeed, if any even slightly malignant darkness attempted to approach, the embrace would have turned into an awe-inspiring blaze, searing with the potency of an immovable sentinel.

Kyle? Do we stick with the plan, or...?

Believe.

I don't... know...

Once again, something welled up within him. As the light he held encased the ring (or whatever it truly was) in a warm embrace, Kyle reached out through the glowing weaves of magic, attempting to help the searching glow.

"Hello?" he called through the hallowed link. "Can you hear me? I want to help."

"Make it stop..." a feeble whisper returned that only Kyle could hear. The light grew slightly within, but was still far away. He could see something... vaguely through the smoke and shadows. Something... not abstract. Something real. A fire? An open door. A room within. There was more inside... something on the other side of the darkness. The tiny light, a flickering flame dimly shedding its warmth on this place... but what was it? Where was it? The sphere, the vortex, no way it had this much space within... a shard? The core? The source? That's what it was, right? It was simple as that, right?

His magic searched and searched, but nothing seemed to work. The magic couldn't pierce the invisible wall, instead holding open the looking glass as Kyle continued to search for answers.

"I cannot help that which I cannot understand," Kyle responded, jumping at the opportunity. There was something there, and if he couldn't get in, then perhaps he could get it out.

"Help me help you."

The brilliance that surrounded the ring stopped its probing, sensing the barriers preventing its progress. However, it did not need to move inward. Such was the strength of the light, that its warmth began to increase beyond Kyle's will, a feeling of comfort pervading the air both around it and within. The spinning ring may have kept it out, like a locked door, but it could not prevent the radiant assurance from pulling the light out from within.

The light rippled within Kyle's Clarity, so subtle that it wasn't even him that caught it--rather, it was a mental nod from Ultima that brought it to his attention. It rode the warmth inside...

It's okay.

... and went still once again.

"Make it stop..." it repeated again and again, farther away, quieter voices said the same thing. A chorus of requests whispered in shouts. So far away. So quiet. Screaming in protest. A hand, ghostly, pale, and semi-transparent pressed against the glass surface from the inside. It couldn't leave, merely waited on its side.

"Kyle... there's something else there," Kyle's shard tensed up, "I don't know what it is... but, I can feel something on the other side. It feels familiar but... not... and so many."

The image grew clearer behind the disembodied hand. A dark, wood frame opened to a small, stone room. A fireplace glowed warmly beside a dark red armchair. Crimson, satin curtains adorned the windows while regal tapestries, scrolls, and paintings lined the only visible wall. Someone sat in the chair facing away from the door, someone else was there as well. Long, raven black hair flowed over a feminine figure dressed in an elegant, lavish, navy blue and black dress.

The image so so clear now, the shadows only danced around the door, no longer impeding Kyle's sight. So clear, so real. Right there every fluttering shadow from the fire revealed new details so close and vivid. He could almost hear the crackling of burning wood, the ticking of an unseen clock. So very real. It felt almost as though Kyle could step forward and walk right in. The door was open.

So many?

I don't like this, Kyle. This is the same man who was so full of tricks before.

I know, I know. Always wanting to help, always doing it a really... dark way.

And he has gone out of his way to try to get you twice. Will the third time be the charm?

Kyle paused, staring at the image before him. Staring at what could very well be a trap, meant to ensnare his heart, or his summon, or his shard of Louis, or all of the above. He peered into the doorway, and for the briefest moment, the vision rippled--

--and his conscious raced.

Rupturing mist and shattered glass and screams and memories, searing light that beget warmth, a chilled fracture of a whole enveloped in all consuming, devouring, empowering, staring at the darkness that stared back, screeching, ripping his essence, not him, him, the he that was himself outside of him, and the they that rent and tore and searched and screamed, and there was lighted darkness and shadowed stars, and from whence the one became two the two became one, one, one--

--and then the single rippled ended, and he was back.

He smiled.

I've got this.

The light that so enveloped the ring spread over to envelop himself as well, separate yet distinctly the same, two shields for two purposes, and, despite Ultima's concerned frustration, he allowed himself to enter.

If worse came to worst, there was always plan B.
