Elana laughed. "Like Ah ain't heard that one a'fore. No. We ain't gonna. Ya heard the woman, she dun know whether she ain't or not. Ya ain't so tough." Harata held Eve back. "Look, Evie. She is stronger, especially more than her looks and words suggest," she murmured into Eve's ear, "You wouldn't scare them off. Do you have a weapon? Do you know how to fight? In any case, she is the strongest of the lot. You won't be able to take her in anger." She then stepped back, and looked at them. "I'll fight you Elana. Finish the job I started properly." Elana laughed, a surprisingly sweet sound. "Sure ya will. 'member who taught you how ta fight? Who knows all yer tricks?" Harata shrugged. "I might have learned some new ones." They started to circle on another. A crowd of other such scum had surrounded them. They were not true SINners, rather those who went to the strongest. Elana laughed. "Strong words. Do ye have a strong attack behind to match?"

The dubbed Sentinel frowned. The attention from the ruffians who had approached was not welcome. When the cloaked woman claimed that there was no choice but to fight, she pondered her question on weapons. She carried nothing physically offensive on her body, and couldn't remember for the life of her how to fight in any form or fashion.
She nearly requested that they avoid a display of violence, but knew automatically that saying such a thing would terminate any inkling of belief that she was the Sentinel. She clamped her mouth shut and thought out her next sentence. The outstanding declarations of the smug girl drew her to distraction, though, so she was slow to respond to the cloaked woman, whom so far she had heard a hint of her name. Hari?.
"I am unarmed," she said in the flatest tone she could provide. She would show no form of fear or discomfort in front of these people. Only dismissal and disappointment that she couldn't kill them where they stood. For the time being.
The smug girl's statement that she knew of a place to go caught her attention, but now that they were surrounded, it seemed a bit pointless. The dubbed Sentinel scowled at Elana. Maybe she didn't know who she was, but damned if she couldn't try to stick to the small belief that she could be.
[I have no skills aside from Signature Strike, and I have yet to figure out how all of the combat stuff works, soooo, I'm perfectly worthless in a fight right now.]

 Evelyn
Evelyn moved towards the Sentinel, getting close enough so the crowd wouldn’t hear. “’Nel, Sentinel or not, unless you want to die, you have to sell it. Make them believe that you are. Tell them they misheard you. You do not remember who she is because it was not important to you. Sell it, Nel. Please.”

Coline took some time to stare at the Captain. It baffled her how a man of such high authority could find it in his heart to apologize to a lowly recruit such as herself. It was... an unnaturally pleasant feeling.
She placed a hand on her chest, breathing out silently through pursed lips. "I'm relieved. I was afraid I'd done something to offend you. I mean--" she said, bringing a finger up to scratch at her cheek mindlessly, a sheepish expression etched on her face. "I may have already said this before, but... I haven't a clue about your culture. To be honest, I didn't even know drows existed until I met you."

Nindyn vel'uss kyorl nind ratha thalra elyhinn dal lil alust. Jessie didn't bat an eyelid at this. "It doesn't surprise me," he said, still tousling his hair with the towel "My people have become legendry after so many centuries beneath the ground. I've been mistaken for a demon and all sorts in my time travelling the surface of Gaia," he frowned, taking a few steps towards an armchair, now rubbing the wet off the back of his neck "I have heard of a pocket of dark elves residing in Durem, but I rarely venture so far inland and as such we have never met. Perhaps you could verify for me - is it true that they serve a boy king? If so, if they were once Drow, they have cut all ties to our culture. As I've told you before, men are regarded as the inferior sex in our society, and none may ever hold a position of power over women."
He gestured to one of the chairs opposing his. "Please, sit down. Make yourself comfortable. Would you like something to drink?" He paused, moving back towards some cupboards on the wall opposite the front door in case she was inclined towards his offer. "Of course, if you have any questions about my heritage I... will try my best to answer as fully as possible."

"Dark elves... the Kuro Gang?" her brow wrinkled in thought, "I... don't know, sir. I've only heard of the name. I still have a lot to learn about Gaia myself. I'm sorry I can't be of much help." she answered apologetically. Then, upon hearing the Captain's offer for a drink, she waved her hands frantically. "No no, please! Don't trouble yourself. I-I'm not all that thirsty, really."
Moving over to the offered seat, Coline's rested her hands stiffly upon her lap. All this still felt a little awkward for her, being inside the Captain's cabin and all, although she'd grown less anxious speaking with him. Actually, now that he's mentioned it... there was something she'd been meaning to ask. "...Captain?" she began after a long silence, curiously raising her head to meet his gaze. "What's a lotha'uss?"
She wasn't sure if she pronounced it correctly, but she hoped it was close enough for him to understand what she was trying to say.

"Oh..." he began, with a hint of a blush "It's silly, really. It means little one."
He smiled at her from beneath his hair rather sheepishly, hands clasped in his lap. "I hope you do not take offense at that. My... my mother used to call me it. I suppose it has been ingrained into my consciousness." Those who watch their backs meet death from the front. ~~ Drow proverb

"Oh, no not at all! Besides, I'm not really that tall." she reassured.
"Lotha'uss..." Coline repeated the word mindlessly, mulling over it, then closed her eyes and beamed like a blameless child. "Mmm... It sounds nice."

Nindyn vel'uss kyorl nind ratha thalra elyhinn dal lil alust. He gazed at her affectionately, eye a little misted.
"To be honest, it's not exactly the most respectful nickname, since it implies weakness. In fact, a male would probably be executed for calling a woman such a name back home."
He grinned back at her, perhaps little michieviously. "But we're not at home, are we?"
No, he most certainly wasn't at home. For a few moments, the haunting image of his mother's face pressed close to his floated in his mind's eye. Her eyes, so like his, were burning with malevolence.
Biu sol whol biu sol... ussta lotha'uss!
Fortunately, the memory was easily shaken off. After four decades or so, one can come to terms with even the most disturbing of things. He was able return to the comfort of his rooms, and the pleasure of Coline's company. As far as she saw, his smile didn't even falter.
An idea suddenly came to him. "What's your favourite colour?" he blurted, almost without thinking. Those who watch their backs meet death from the front. ~~ Drow proverb

Coline couldn't help but laugh a little at that final remark. Although it did sting a little on the inside. Lotha'uss... Weakness... How could such a nice-sounding word imply something so negative? And to think that the Captain had been addressing her as such for some time now.
"Hm?" she muttered, breaking away from her thoughts. Coline's eyes furrowed as she pursed her lips, eyes darted towards the ceiling. "Well... Blue is a nice color. Like how blue the sky is on a clear day..." she mused. She gave it a few more seconds of thought before turning back to the drow with an awkward grin. "I've never really thought about it until now."
Straightening in her seat, she asked back. "How about you, sir? What's yours?"

Nindyn vel'uss kyorl nind ratha thalra elyhinn dal lil alust. "Blue..." Jessie mused "Yes, it is a lovely colour... but all the more lovely for your favour."
He thought for a little longer, seeming to see and not see her at the same time. Eventually, he nodded. "It would bring out your eyes perfectly, wouldn't it?"
Cocking his still-wet head a little, he smiled again. "My favourite is gold... as you can probably tell."
He tugged at the golden hem of his black robe, glancing down at it and then back at her. "And please, Coline - do call me Jessie." Those who watch their backs meet death from the front. ~~ Drow proverb

Her eyes? Coline brought a hand up to touch her cheek with her fingertips. She wasn't sure what it was about what he said but it made her a tad flustered. Listening as the Captain went on she couldn't help but smile back. He had such a brilliant smile, just as brilliant as his favorite color, if not more. But of course that wasn't something she'd openly say unless she wants to parade around like a human tomato.
Yes, she was relaxed now. Casually chatting with the Captain seems to have chased away the awkward feeling. But it came back with a vengeance far too soon. Coline's posture tensed as a darker shade of red started to creep up her features. "But... but si-- I mean, Cap-- That's--" Her head sunk into her shoulders as her lips stretched into one thin line. "I'll... try my best." she answered.
Coline's eyes flickered around the room, far from the Captain's gaze, when the line of weaponry along the walls caught her interest. Not just along the walls, in fact; there were some stacked on the floor, some on desks. Seeming to have composed herself again, she turned to the drow. "You can use all these?"

Nindyn vel'uss kyorl nind ratha thalra elyhinn dal lil alust. Jessie watched her closely, enchanted by her reactions. The way she lowered her gaze, a blush rapidly stealing its way across her cheeks, was enough to set his own heart alight. Over the last few hours he'd come to regard her as the most beautiful creature in the world, and during their conversation, when not immersed in his own thoughts, he'd been quietly scrutinising her as if drinking in a living piece of art.
So far, he hadn't seen anything wrong in the way he was feeling. He'd wanted to protect her - to hold her, to keep her safe. But now, as he watched her pursing her lips, he was hit by a sudden image of himself - kissing her. He blinked, suddenly disturbed. He'd already overstepped the boundaries of propriety by hugging her that morning, hadn't he? And yet, as she turned her head demurely to look around the room, he somehow couldn't bade the fantasy to go away. The feeling of heat in his chest began to spread throughout his body. He was sure that he was blushing. And then, as the expression on her face suddenly seemed to make sense in his mind, he realised with an unhappy twist that he'd made her uncomfortable again.
He was just about to refute his request by telling her to call him whatever she liked, when she turned back to him. He started slightly under her gaze, but was pleased - almost relieved - by her question. "Oh, yes!" he said, jumping up "Every single one. A lot are just variations on a single type, you know," he gestured to a rack of rapiers, all in the recognisable style but with different coloured blades and fabulously ornate handles "But some are entirely unique, like that hammer over there. These are just part of a collection I've picked up on my travels. I don't like to leave them unguarded for too long, you know."
Realising he was rambling as he stopped to admire an unusually shaped shortbow made from some brightly coloured but unidentifiable material, he turned back to her, bowing his head a little in apology. "To answer your question more explicitly - yes, I am proficient in every style of weaponry present in this room. I picked up my early training while serving in the private army of House Lo'Roud in my home, around... fifty years ago. Since then, well," he smiled, rather shyly. He didn't want her to think he was bragging. "I've been around." Those who watch their backs meet death from the front. ~~ Drow proverb

It seems like she hit the nail on the head with this question. She found it endearing how the Captain, who had been known by many for his cold disposition, had rambled on about his weapons like a little boy would his toys.
Looking back over at the stunning display, Coline smiled. "Incredible..." she remarked. "I've only been able to make use of a trident as of late, and I'm not very skilled with it yet. But perhaps someday I'll be able to expand my repertoire." she giggled to herself. "Maybe then I'll even be able to use a sword as big as yours."
The hopeful recruit took a few moments to reflect on the drow's words. He was truly an admirable man more than worthy of his position. She considered herself lucky to be able to study under a man of such warriorly prowess. To think he's been in service for fifty years...
...
Quickly, Coline rose up to her feet, a hand clasped over her mouth. She took a few wary paces towards the Captain, tilting her head to have a better view of his face. "No way..." she mumbled, eyes wide in disbelief. "But... but you look so young!"

Nindyn vel'uss kyorl nind ratha thalra elyhinn dal lil alust. Jessie looked at her in surprise. Of course, the fact that she didn't know his age had never crossed his mind. He rarely thought about how old he was. A flash of worry went through him. Would it somehow change her opinion of him?
Whether it did or did not, she deserved to know the truth. "I'm sorry if it feels like I've deceived you," he said sadly "I may look like a young man, but the truth is that I'm almost seventy... that's still barely an adult for my kind, though."
In his surprise, he hadn't noticed her coming towards him, gazing at his face in wonder. He felt himself blush again, but thoughtlessly pulled back the hair which was covering his face so that she could get a better look at his youthful, smooth features. With defined cheekbones, jaw and brow, but a soft, feminine eye, mouth and nose, he might have been the definition of "pretty boy" if not for the hardened, taught expression that usually gripped his face.
He remembered too late the lack of patch to cover his missing left eye. True, the wound was not entirely offensive after so many years, but a missing eye is never for the squeamish and to him the loss was rather personal. Grimacing as he realised his mistake, he uttered a small cry and turned around sharply, releasing his hair and rearranging it with his back to Coline.
"I-I'm sorry..."
