Yeah. Soul Calibur really likes to screw up it's own universe.
Do they even explain how FINAL BOSS gets both Soul Calibur and Soul Edge?
Forgot the Ivy / Cervantes story, although I'm sure they've completely screwed that up, too. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Nightmare was actually the possessed demon lovechild of Sigfried and Taki who just happens to take the form of armor after it split from Sigfried's body.

Okay, that's enough crying. Stop that.
I don't know, it kind has that "I am my own grandpa" vibe to it, trying to connect every single character with every other.
Can't remember most of the details right now, but I found it funny that Maxi, XiangHua, and...Kilik? all know each other. I think. Zhe convoluted storylines, zhey escape me. They all get to beat each other up in the end, anyway xp

Now that you mention it, I do remember that Kilik, Xianghua, and Maxi are all supposed to have some sort of mutual friendship. But more often than not, it results in a cut-scene that goes something like this.
"Kilik / Xianghua / Maxi! What are you doing here?"
"I've come to live my destiny."
"You can't go on, Kilik / Xianghua / Maxi. It's too dangerous."
"If you won't let me go, I'll have to go through you then, Kilik / Xianghua / Maxi!"
*EPIC BATLORZ.*
Then they get their a** handed to them by flavor-of-the-day Nightmare or Sigfried before FINAL BOSS.

Holy crap, f'serious.
I don't know how shiny and distracting it is in-game (what with not. having. played it T^T), but I got a good chuckle out of the Sigfried's Saint Seiya look. And the fact that Nightmare's evil pacman is growing quite nicely.

... actually I don't know. I guess 'cuz she wears a thong. Her story is total crap, though. She has amnesia because a demon possessed her after her parents were killed or something. I think there was more but I honestly stopped reading after that part. I could literally feel the genericness sucking the creativity out of me.
A lot of the new characters they advertised are just glorified palette swaps. Angol Fear (who looks effing creepy compared to the rest of the characters and environments) is a rip-off of... I think Seung Mi-na. And the elf-girl is Amy, I believe.
@Mat: Siggy has some weird ice-armor thing going on now. And apparently Soul Edge and Soul Calibur have "final" forms now, which make them even more rave-party-glowing.

Anyways, Cervantes and Ivy are like, Father and Daughter aren't they? Its been a very long time since I played the ones before.

Nightmare still = unbridled rage in shiny blue armor.
Siegfried is alright, but I just can't kick as much a** with him as I can with Nightmare.
Also, Astaroth is a cheap broken mother ********. mad Two ******** hits on you and you're already like a half or two third's dead. In the guide its like everybody else, "4 hits 45 damage, 3 hits 85 damage." For ******** Astaroth its like, "2 hits 180 damage." I'm thinking, where's the ******** fairness in that? And it doesn't help that Nightmares moves seem to have gotten alot less powerful since 3... stare
