"Well, he's busy right now," Cody said, glancing at Dari. "We're making cookies and I don't want him ruining his phone." Was Toby being Dadmode again?

"It's my phone, actually. Can you just hold it up to his head for a second?" Toby knew Dari could hear him from here, but Cody would be less likely to overhear if it were to Dari's head.

Cody rolled his eyes. "Could it wait?" he asked. "Toby, we're just patching things up. Call later."

"I'm fine, Toby!" Dari called, hoping that it made it through the phone, "We're making cookies!"
Toby frowned. This could all be a front...
"I'll have Cody take a picture!" Dari continued.

"Why wouldn't you be fine?" Cody blinked, looking to Dari. He hadn't hung up yet. He was puzzled. "I'm keeping him tomorrow too," he added, directing that at Toby.

"People can go crazy when reality shatters," Dari said.
Toby sighed with relief. Okay. So everything really was fine.
"It's nothing personal," Toby said, "I've just seen too much of it to not worry."

"Just don't put me in a room with anything with fangs," Cody kissed Dari's cheek. "Don't worry Toby, I'm taking good care of him."

"Alright. You two have fun. See you later, Dari."
"See you!" Dari chimed back, although Toby had been speaking quietly enough that he shouldn't have been able to hear.
"Thanks, Cody. Bye." Toby hung up. He sighed. Everything was fine, he told himself. Everything was totally fine.

"Is Toby a selkie too?" Cody asked, grabbing a bag of chocolate chips and opening it. He took a handful and ate it. He smiled happily. "You know. You're kind of what I've always dreamt about. Meeting an alien. I never would've guessed you'd be the person I fell for."

"It was just meant to be," Dari said with a laugh, "and, uh. No. Would you like to see something interesting?" Dari took the bag of chocolate chips and then pulled off his ring. He then took a couple of chocolate chips and pressed them into his hand where Cody could watch them dissolve. Hopefully that'd keep his interest, rather than Toby's species, but maybe not.

Dari certainly knew how to keep his interest. Cody watched as they dissolved. His eyes were wide, but not with horror. He set another chocolate chip in Dari's hand. "Can you do that again?"

Rather than shoving this one,Dari brought his membrane up around it and sucked it in.
"I can do it as many times as you like," Dari said with a smile.

'Awesome!" Cody smiled at Dari. "What else can you do, love?" He touched Dari's hand hesitantly, then taking it. "I love you," he added.

"Mostly just that," Dari said with a little laugh, "I can 'eat' just about anything. I can change shape too. I have no natural shape, like those people in my paintings. This is simply my human shape. I love you too."
