"Explains what?" Kara inquired curiouslity, "Did Gion say something else? Or papa?"

Though it might be the former, her father had an annoying habit of keeping certain bits of information to himself. Such as her thread from Long, though really it wasn't so much annoying to anyone but Long.

Serenity smiled warmly at Kara. "According to Gion, Ulrich and Ulani were connected by a red thread - it just makes sense. I don't know if you've noticed exactly how they act when they're together, but ..."

She laughed. "After so many years, they're as loving together as if they were only newly married. I mean obviously they don't get carried away where they might be seen, but they're as lovey as ... well. You know what I mean."

She'd been told about how Ulani and Ulrich had been when Kara and Donovan had arrived. Ulani had thought it quite funny, actually, though she had been admittedly curious as to why Kara and Donovan had tried not to interrupt.

Then again, Serenity had learned that humans were usually more discreet in showing their emotions.

Kara giggled at that knowing how the two acted sometimes, "They act just like they had never grown old," she replied with a laugh, "It was funny, Ulani whacked Ulrich and Skye told her bad, and don't hit."

Serenity laughed again. "Yes ... they are the epitamy of immortality - physical and mental."

Her smile faded slowly. "Most of the time, anyways. When they talk about their family they seem as old as Sir Valdemar - did you meet him when you were in Tor Karad? But yes ... when they talk about Cowan and Ruwen and Terexin, that's the only time you can tell how old they are. But they do love to talk about them, despite appearances."

Kara looked a bit sad at Terexin's name, "Yes, but children do that to you, wether they grow up slowly or quickly, you can't help but feel old," she replied a bit.

Afterall, she wasn't that old and her children weren't, but thinking about how they use to do things would make anyone feel old.

Serenity shook her head. "Not that they've grown, that's not what makes them feel old - it's that they're gone. The sorrow, the pain - that's the only thing that makes them feel old. Terexin is just the freshest in their memories, though the thought of any of their children makes them sad. Cowan was killed the same way nearly three thousand years ago now, and Ruwen's living in Laurefalas, where Ulani and Ulrich can never see her again. Their age has nothing to do with it."

"There is that too," Kara admitted, "Remember I met Terexin once," she told Serenity seriously, "At least... Ruwen is living, even if they can't see her. Knowing she's well is better," Kara murmured.

"But knowing that she's alive and well, and that despite that, they'll never see her again, only adds to the pain," Serenity pointed out. "It's torture, not being able to see their only living offspring."

She shrugged. "And in that way, I can relate," she murmured, looking away.

"It is in a way, but.... to out live your children is great grief," Kara replied back softly, "Not that it makes it easier the other way around for the children," she added as an after thought.

But it was one of the thoughts about knowing she might not grow old she would have to deal with. Kara didn't know how long it would be from now she would notice, if it happened.

Serenity nodded. "Immortality, while many, including mortals, believe it to be a great blessing, can be an equally powerful curse," she murmured. "And there are elves who envy the humans their mortality - the ability to leave this world behind when they die, rather than return again and again, an endless cycle of pain and suffering ..."

"It is what you make of it," Kara replied, "Rebirth back home was never viewed like that, it was more of a hope in the next life," she commented, "It is what you make it."

It was true, rebirth back home wasn't viewed like that, maybe it was because humans did have a short life span that they could view life like that. After all, even if they did get glimpses of the past life, it was a past life, and not them.

Serenity remained silent, helping Kara over a rough bit of the road that had become overgrown with bushes and new growth trees. Things were different for both of them, and the fact that they were different races meant that they could debate te same subject all day long and it was quite possible they still wouldn't understand each other.

"I've never asked Ulani or Ulrich," she said finally, "but they're well old enough to have had memories of a previous life return ... I wonder if they have."

Although it was equally possible that this was still their first life.

"Maybe..." Kara murmured fluttering her wings a bit.

Since the few months since her fledging she kept having the urge to try and hop and things like that. Donovan had called the flying insticts and compared angels to birds. She didn't know if he was serious or not, but it's been like that a bit as she tip toed hop a bit even though the mountain was steep.

Serenity saw the little wing flutter and mistook its meaning.

"It's not too tough of terrain for you, is it?" she asked Kara, concerned. "We could find an easier way, or go somewhere else, if you'd prefer ..."

She didn't want to sound condescending, but she didn't know if Kara was used to this sort of traveling and she didn't want to make Kara feel obligated to take this route and do more than she was able or used to.

Kara shook her head with a smile, "No, I'm fine," she looked up at Serenity, "Don't worry," she took another little hop, she wanted to be up higher.

Maybe Donovan was right, maybe she was at the equaltive of wanting to jump out of the nest. She wondered if that would hurt.
