"I'm not entirely sure," admitted Marcus, now fully smiling and leaning back and resting on the heels of his hand. "But I'm asking myself the same of you."

"Well it is quite obvious why you went for me. You had your fill of testosterone at the party and wanted to talk to a man." Terryn shrugged. "Finding no other intelligent people around of your gender, you sought out the next best thing. Of course, you could not deny your hormonal urges forever and after your lower hemisphere detected that physically I was indeed a woman, you were pretty much just trapped."

"Oh. Well, that clarifies it," answered Marcus dryly, very much amused. "But what about you? You've tolerated me for well over any time that you've spent with any other fellow."

"Hmmm...now that is odd actually." Terryn bit on her thumbnail while she thought. "I suppose it goes back to the fact that you ran out of testosterone. You spoke to me like I was a person and not just a vessel to take your sexual frustrations out on. Besides, you are unlike my other suitors. They all sought marriage, you are possibly the only man I know who abbhors it as much as I."

Marcus nodded thoughtfully. "That is a good thing about you. Most of the girls I've bedded were under the pretense I'd wed them later. Not that I'd ever even encouraged the notion," he added quickly. "But they did assume things."

"As did all the men my father paraded by me." Terryn groaned and rolled her eyes. "It was utterly insufferable. They were practically spouting sonnets at me and we had yet to even meet in person. That is one of the things I found attractive about you. When we first met, it was obvious you find my somewhat irritating. You actually had a real, honest opinion about me, it was very refreshing."

"And...well, you've already told me all the reasons I was attracted to you, so I suppose you'd not care to hear them once more," said Marcus, with a slight shrug and a slight grin.

"I doubt I need to, unless there is more." Terryn shrugged, not really expecting him to have anything to add.

"Well, there is that you make every other girl look positively dreadful in comparison," he said, his voice sounding a little uncomfortable. It wasn't that he was unused to saying that particular line. Rather, it was that he meant it, and he was unsure of whether Terryn would be pleased or smack him.

"Dreadful now?" Terryn almost scoffed at this. "I highly doubt that next to me a perfectly shaped, large breasted blonde with blue eyes and a glowing tan looks dreadful. I give off the appearance of death in the wee hours of the night...on purpose too."

Marcus shifted. "No, actually. I've compared and contrasted, you know. Done my reading. And I do mean dreadful on their part."

Terryn smiled a little, her pale skin picking up just a hint of a blush on her cheeks as she looked up at him. "I am sure you say that to all the women."

Marcus considered denying this, but reluctantly conceded that Terryn would spot his lie before he'd finished getting the words out of his mouth. "When I was 8," he began, fumbling for a way to make himself seem more sincere. "My father wanted to buy a better estate for us--the one I live in now. But an old woman lived in it, all by herself. And so, because she did not want to believe the home she stayed in was worth so much, she told us about the cracks in the walls, the one patch of roof that leaked, the musty celler." He looked up, realizing that he hadn't proved his point very well, and brushed Terryn's shoulder with his fingertips apologetically. "You are like that old woman. It's a very nice house."

Terryn opened her mouth to speak, but found herself only falling silent and blushing as she looked down into her lap. For some reason, she had a feeling that was not something he said to all the women. She inched closer to him, taking his hand in hers and gazing up at him. "You know...if ever I were to fool myself into believing I was in love with someone, it would probably you I had fooled myself over." She leaned over and left a lingering kiss on his lips, keeping herself close even after she pulled away.

Marcus smiled. It didn't frighten him away, thanks to her 'if.' "I feel the same." He took her other hand as well, deciding that he was a terrible verbal communicator, and kissed her, without any of his usual urgency. When he did pull away, he smiled a little bit wider. "And I haven't said that to anyone."
