"That's fine and all," Earendil frowned, "but he was the one who threw us in there in the first place. Without cause or explanation. He asked us to follow him into the castle, and then boom! Bars."

Vergil thought about it, and wandered over to sit by Cindy's feet. "That doesn't sound very nice of him," he said flatly. "Why would he lock you up without a reason?"

Earendil shrugged. "Because we were different than them? Because we took them by surprise? Who knows?"

"Because he didn't believe the things you were telling him," Lin replied, "As much as I hate to admit it the only reason why we got you out was because I mentioned Aerin. Otherwise I think he was close to throwing me in a cell because I called him a hypocrite."

"Now that's the Lin I know," Donovan crackled.

"You should not be happy about this...."

Donovan shrugged, "You're fine now and what done is done. Besides you and peaceful and stupid male in the same situation does not match up."

Vergil was confused. "What does Aerin have to do with him?" he asked, tugging on Cindy's skirt gently to get her attention. "Mother, why would a prince in a far off country care about Aerin enough to let people out of jail?"

He really didn't pay attention to things when he didn't have to. Sure, he had been present the day before, but had he really been listening to what was going on? Not likely.

Cindy smiled and shook her head a bit, "Aurin explained yesterday that Aerin was this prince's sister."

It was her subtle way of telling him he should pay attention more often. Though she supposed to him most conversations were boring.

Vergil blinked. He didn't care much one way or the other about princes and princesses, having spent a few years here already, he was pretty much desensitized, since all the Aldriches were of royal blood. But there was one thing that he had to wonder.

"What the hell is she doing all the way out here, then, if her family is way over there?" he asked, astonished.

"Vergil language!"

Though Cindy didn't do anything other than scold him, one could almost imagine her hitting her forehead, swearing was the one thing she also hadn't managed to cure him of.

Donovan crackled at that which earned him a whack from his wife.

"Father that isn't funny," Cindy added.

Lin took it all in stride besides if Vergil had been here for several years he was (maybe) old enough to swear, "She didn't like it at home."

Vergil wasn't quite listening to Lin. He was paying more attention to Donovan and Kara. He wasn't quite used to seeing that kind of interaction ... he didn't spend a lot of time with Ulrich and Ulani, and of course Shael and Adonai didn't have that type of relationship.

"She hit him!" he exclaimed to Cindy, pointing at Kara and Donovan. "I thought you're not supposed to hit people!"

That only made Donovan crack up harder, at poor Cindy's expense. It was obvious to him that his poor proper daughter had a handful of a son on her hands.

"Not like she hits hard," Donovan grinned, "She's not aiming to hurt me."

Cindy sighed and covered her eyes, she had always rued the day when she would introduce Vergil to Donovan, for no other reason than the fact that she knew Donovan would be at least somewhat amused by it if Vergil didn't tick him off first.

"Well I'm just little!" Vergil replied, standing up to his full height (at which he didn't even reach Cindy's knee). "So I can't hit hard either, but I'm not allowed to hit anyone! Not even Ruran! And he's mean to me!"

He pouted. It wasn't fair!

"Ah but when you try to hit Ruran are you trying to hurt the bugger?" Donovan asked Vergil wagging a finger.

"Father... please try not to encourage anything, and Vergil," Cindy replied seriously, "Your grandmother and grandfather have a relationship based on trust, she would never hit him and mean him serious harm or ill will, she just does so because sometimes he needs to learn not to encourage bad habits like swearing."

Vergil frowned up at Cindy. "You don't hit me when I swear," he pointed out. "And don't we trust each other? I know you would never hurt me bad, and I would never hurt you!"

Earendil couldn't help but be amused as he watched the debate. He had never really seen a difficult child like this before, and as much as he knew he shouldn't encourage it by being entertained by it, he just couldn't help it. It seemed as though Cindy had her hands full with him.

Lin chewed her lower lip trying not to laugh, her poor older sister. Though Vergil's questions told her that perhaps the boy was a bit socially lacking, but then again a relationship like her parents was complicated.

Cindy repressed a sigh, "Vergil, that's different. For your grandmother and grandfather it's another way of showing affection believe it or not."

"It's a quirk," Lin tired to be helpful, "It's complicated Vergil, or maybe you should just visit Ulani and Ulrich more often."

Honestly compared to how hard Ulani hits Ulrich sometimes her mother was a lightweight.

Vergil scowled. "And everyone wonders why I don't care that I'm not ever gonna grow up. Grownups are so weird. First they say don't hit, then they say hitting means you love someone."

He jammed his hands deep into his pockets and headed off towards the study. "I'm gonna go read my lessons," he told the others in an overly loud voice, "since that's where I can actually learn something."

Earendil laughed. "Come on, you don't have to go away so soon!" he grinned.

"You're far too amused by this..." Lin murmured to Earendil.

Not that she could blame him, this was very amusing but it seemed the poor guy was confused. Lin didn't know how to explain it, it just worked.

"Don't irk him," Cindy told Earendil softly knowing Vergil still had a bit of a temper which was really the reason behind the no hitting rule.

Earendil chuckled softly at Lin. "I've just never seen anyone as difficult as him," he murmured back quietly. "Yes, this is amusing to me. If I ever had any kids, I hope they wouldn't behave this way, but really, considering he had lived on his own for such a long time before even coming to Cindy ..."

Well, he figured that the boy was doing fairly well.

It was just amusing, was all.

Vergil wasn't amused though. "Maybe I'll come out and talk to you all again later," he told them all as he disappeared into the study. "And maybe not!"

And the door shut slowly behind him (which was probably a result of the hardest slam he could muster).
