Ivie sneezed. Wrinkling her nose a little, she tugged a handkerchief from her coat pocket and dabbed at her nose with it. Odd, she didn't have a cold...she shrugged it off as some stray dust, and adjusted her bag.

There was no work tonight; she didn't finish University until around five so there was really no time, so Friday nights had been designated 'study night' for our overworking red-head. Nope, no wild university parties for her; she was going to go home, reheat something and settle down with her books until a reasonable hour, then try to get a decent night's sleep.

It would actually happen too. Her bag rearranged, she dug her hands a little deeper into her pockets and shivered. Winter was easing off now into a timid spring, and the days had begun to hit that annoying stage where it was too cool in the mornings and evenings to go anywhere without a coat, but it was far too warm around midday to wear one. She'd gone for a compromise; a heavy coat but leaving off her winter stockings for the day, Her boots crunched against stray puddles of slush as she made her way home through the twighlight, her eyes steadily in front of her and ignoring everyone.

"Hey, sweetcheeks!" She ignored it. It wasn't the first time she'd been heckled, and she really did blame the red-hair. After all, there was nothing about her that screamed 'skank! Hit on me now!'. It hardly ever amounted to anything, any -

A rough hand landed on her shoulder and spun her around, revealing the heckler to be a lanky man in his thirties. Alcahol burnt Ivie's nose as he breathed through his mouth, and she could see he had a tooth missing. "Was talkin' to ya, sweetheart, ain't polite to ignore a guy, yanno?"

Come on, it was only five in the evening! Nothing could happen...right? Still, she felt her palms beginning to sweat.

"Excuse me, I'm expected somewhere." Her voice didn't even tremble. Go Ivie!

Nye had decided to leash Lizzie and take the both of them out for a nice, refreshing walk. Of course Nye had to live in a decent-but-not-quite-upper-end neighborhood where many boutiques had held their own. He couldn't help but pass and think about how lots of the clothes in the windows would have looked so cute on Ivie, and then, thinking himself pathetic for his loneliness, he would move on.

The walk itself was fairly boring after they had escaped the clothes district. Lizzie would stop to sniff or take a rest stop occasionally, of course, but that was so like a puppy her age. (Though she had grown quite a bit, measuring up by now to Nye's knee!)

He was thinking of turning around when he heard a definitely intoxicated voice call out to some poor woman on the street. Deciding to help, Nye looked around for the hoodlum and his victim. He saw a bunch of guys standing around ... well, someone, but he would have to wait. He wasn't quite sure of what was going on just yet.

Ivie would have to check her back later on, specifically for a sign that said 'please pick on me, I'm a walk-over'. Why did groups of tipsy guys always come and harass her, anyway?

Well, she hadn't seen his friends during the first minute or so, and her lips pursed a little. Okay, she was worried now, even if it was only five pm. Her can of mace could only take one or two of them...

"C'mon, hun, let's go somewhere a little more private, huh?"

"Look, people are expecting me." It was a calculated responce. Usually, if people heard you were expected somewhere they'd leave you alone.

Obviously these guys hadn't read that memo.

"Aw, just a few kisses, luv!" And then one of them reached out and groped her. Ivie didn't even think twice, she lashed out and socked the man clean in the face.

Now Ivie was a poor, abused girl but she wasn't a walk-over unless it came to her ex-boyfriend. Like hell she was about to let some drunk fondle her yumyums!

Nye's panic meter went off when he saw even a glimpse of red hair. He crossed the street with utmost promptness, not quite sure if it was Ivie or not, but he really couldn't take any chances. He had just passed the yellow line when one of the taller ones, the one closest to the poor girl, had stepped back and rubbed his cheek sorely. He didn't look too elated with whatever just happened, and as soon as his expression changed from flirty to dangerous Nye sped up even more.

With a bewildered Lizzie leashed up in his hand, Nye pushed aside one of the lankier fellows with his shoulder and slipped his arm casually around Ivie's shoulders. "There you are!" he said casually, trying to hide the mix of nerves and relief. "I've been waiting for you!"

    Thank god their lies matched.

"And who're you?" the man said angrily, clearly about to punch the living daylights out of someone. Even as he loomed over Nye, the man kept his cool demeanor and lied flawlessly. "Her boyfriend. Officer Delsignore, to you."

Her knuckles hurt. Whoever knew socking a man in the face could hurt you as well as them? Her injured limb slipped into her other one and she massaged it, noting that instead of driving the men off it just...made them angry. Oh hell, she knew what these sort were like angry!

So she was backing off when she heard footsteps behind her and a familiar nose at her knees. An even more familiar arm draped around her shoulders, and she didn't need to glance at Nye as he swooped in. But she did, and although he kept his eyes on the men in front of them, she sent him a nervous smile.

Her eyes snapped back to the injured man as he snarled at them, and his tone made the red-head shrink into Nye's arm. Were the move not so sincear, we could have given Ivie an oscar for it it was so convincing. Her eyes were wide, and her lips trembled a little, but only Nye would have noticed the slight start she gave at the word 'boyfriend'. Well she certainly wasn't going to complain about it right now...and she did feel...awfully safe here.

She simply shrugged a little with a nervous smile as the men took a double-take at the word 'officer'. It was a magic word, that one, and they glanced between each other and quite quickly took off. Soon the street was empty again, and even as rush-hour began, Ivie didn't pull out of Nye's embrace. It was safe.

"Ah...thank you." She said quietly, glancing up at the man who seemed to be dominating her life recently.

Nye sent them off with a glare, making sure the thugs turned the corner before he loosened his protective atmosphere on Ivie. The entire atmosphere seemed to change from tense to close, and safe. Nye's expression lightened as he gave Ivie's shoulder a slight squeeze and checked to see the leash was still in his hands. "You're very welcome. Which way are you off to?"

He wasn't about to explain his simple lies and just how intricately they were woven sometimes, even if these idiots only needed one word to send them scurrying for their safety. He'd have someone call the police on them for sure, next time. Thank god he actually had an officer Delsignore in his lovely little contact list to call up for backup if he ever needed it. Poor feller was already used to emergency calls from Nye.

Or, well, at least someone who sounded like him.

Surprisingly, why Nye had passed himself off as a Police Officer, Ivie hadn't even blinked. Really, she'd just thought he'd been bluffing to send the guys off, so she didn't even bring it back up. Instead, she subconciously snuggled a little further into Nye's arm as a chill wind swept up. No matter how complect and secretive Nye might have been, for now he was rather safe and very warm. A good wind buffer.

Hell, the only really good contact list Ivie had was a very large group of doctors. They were pretty handy sometimes, but I digress.

"Mm? Oh..." She seemed to think for a moment, as if she'd forgotton just where she'd been off to. "Oh! Right, just home. Studying."

Oh Ivie, how exciting your life is.

Nye lifted an eyebrow, looking at Ivie curiously. Their habits were so different, it was almost comical that they got along. She would go home from work and study, and he would try a new takeout place every day on his way home from work, having favorites that he re-visited on days where he wasn't feeling so great.

Not particularly minding the fact that she didn't shrug out of his grip, Nye oriented himself and started walking with his arm still around the redhead and the leash in his free hand. "Alright then, I'll walk you home."

He walked in silence for a good few minutes, watching his panting dog carefully, not quite sure of where to begin with small talk. "So, what've you been up to? Aside from, you know, weird man-eating heaters and battles with soured milk."
