Even after the tension had left her fingers, I felt the strange need to keep holding on. Now covered in even more blood than before, I felt my breathing become short and sharp, felt my eyes become wide and confused. I'd never seen someone die before. Never. I felt somehow tainted, as if I'd been part of the ghastly act, and although I was well aware that it was completely necessary I felt like a murderer. Not like when the I had felt the shattering of zombie skulls against my guitar. Suddenly, I lost the desire to continue. Hands shaking, I let Mary's body fall to the ground and faced my zombie enemies. Then, slowly, I turned to face my comrades.
"Sorry everyone." I said, though I didn't recognise the voice when it spoke, "I can't do this."
As the wave of flesh made its way over the barricade, I had no intention of running.

"Oi, Alex." Gabriel said, growing anxious, "C'mon, mate, get back from there. We need to move."
Gabriel was surprised to find himself recalling that, not all that long ago, he would have happily let this moping individual die, perhaps even have taken pleasure in it. But now something was screaming out at him, demanding that he save Alex. Because he was his friend. Not his leader, nothing like that. But his friend. And for the first time in his life Gabriel believed that this friend was worth saving.
"Fine, if you won't save yourself." he said, with a sudden narrowing of the eyes and a gritting of the teeth, "Guess it's my job to do it for you."
He moved rapidly across the floor to where Alex had dropped the chainsaw and picked it up in both hands. He'd used the device before, and had no qualms about doing so again. Rushing to the far wall, he slammed the plug into the socket and raced back to Alex's position, standing behind him like his shadow.
"Hurry up and grow a pair." he remarked, pulling the cord on the side of the machine and letting the raw of the saw fill his ears. The first zombie came slowly into range.

Jenny watched the barriers fall with a smile and was proud of Gabriel when he decided to fight, it looked to her as if his fear had left him; she was sure he had understood, Alex on the other hand appeared to have given up.
-Leave him- came the order so she did, she ran towards the zombie hoard with a battle cry instead and jumped into the densest part of the crowd, slashing and chopping. Heads rolled away from her, not one of them got to touch her before they fell, casualties of their own lack of faith. Her face was lit with a maniacal light and her hair flew around her, strands of it getting stuck on the bloody patches on her face.

With a cry Gabriel lunged forwards, sticking the spinning blade of the saw as far into the first of his foes as he could. It met little resistance, cutting through skin and organ and bursting out the other side in a shower of blood, drenching the zombies behind it. With an upward pull, the saw was freed and the head of his enemy fell from its ravaged shoulders, splitting on the ground like a watermelon. With that one out of the way, Gabriel could easily see the extent of their... infestation. The horde stretched back to the ends of the car park, a good eighty yards from their position. It was as if all of Halton and its surrounding villages had come together for a big undead party, with the three of them as the snacks. He should have been scared, something inside him commented, but Gabriel just smiled a thin smile and set upon the next of his foes.

Fifteen zombies fell to her blade before she could get a good idea of their numbers. She sliced open three and decapitate two to get back to Gabriel and Alex. She had a plan, it would be dangerous but worth a try, still cutting up the monsters she called over to Gabriel, “D’you have any flares? Maybe some fireworks?” If she could start a fire near the compressed flour she could blow the whole building to hell, all they’d have to do was get the zombies inside and start a fire, preferably a white or blue hot flame to start with but after that it’s all nice and destructive.

"Fireworks?" Gabriel yelled above the drone of his weapon, "Not exactly the time of year for that, is it? Sorry to say this but all flammable stuff got swiped in the initial looting. For fuel, y'know?"
He mauled the arms off another one before taking a further glimpse outside.
"We can't go anywhere with him" (he gestured at Alex with the thumb of his left hand) "acting like that. We'll need him thinking straight if we're to get out."
With another thrust forward, the armless (Gabriel almost chuckled) zombie collapsed to the floor, trailing blood. A pair of zombies behind it slipped in the entrails, falling face first but still grabbing out for Gabriel's legs. They were quickly dispatched.

Alex. Hold on.
"Targets acquired. Utilising suppressive fire."
Bullets streamed out across the carpark, and a pair of beautiful explosions lit up the sky. Handgun clasped between both palms, Elise pulled the trigger again and again, her shells joining those of her squadmates, five people she barely knew, lying on the ground. There was no point in securing targets, nor confirming kills, it was irrelevant. All she knew was the battle ahead.
The soldier on the far left, who wasn't using the armoured vehicle as a rear-guard, didn't hear the enemy approach him from behind, and he was dead in an instant, sickly jaws clamped around his unprotected neck. He didn't even scream. Elise barely needed a second to aim, and the aggressor lay dead on the concrete. She also pumped a bullet into the soldier's head, not wanting to take a chance. A scream, and as she turned she saw their squad leader on the far right get swamped by foes, who had now turned on the armed soldiers over the unprotected civilians in the shopping centre.
"Fall back. Unable to hold ground. Fall back."
The three remaining soldiers leapt back into the vehicle, slamming the doors shut behind them. There was a scream of the wheels spinning against the ground, and they were in motion, bodies thumping like rain against the front of the transport. Elise sat on the floor cradling her gun, her eyes blank. The soldier at the wheels was able to halve the number of undead enemies before the engine gave under the pressure and it rolled to a halt. Hands thumped down on the plated titanium doors, and for the time they were safe. Not a word was shared between them.

Jenny swore loudly, getting desperate she asked, “D’you have a f** lighter then?” she’d have to be careful but she could make it, “Why the hell should we care about him, he’s given up, he’s pretty much one of them now.” One of them grabbed her wrist and she yelled before punching him in the face and caving it in. The grip slackened but she didn’t notice as she had already moved onto her next victim.
She thought she heard something moving outside and nearly laughed, of course there was something moving outside, the hoards were out there.

"You wanna start a fire with a lighter?! The flame on those things won't hold them off for long. We'd be better off trying to kill every last one of 'em."
With a wide sweep, three heads were severed, and Gabriel used the temporary barricade that the headless bodies provided to head back to Alex.
"We... have to stick together." he called back to Jenny as he did, "Best chance we got."
He reached Alex, and shook him gently by the shoulder. "Hey, Earth to Alex, we need you here. We're gonna make a run for it and we don't wanna leave you behind. C'mon mate, snap out of it!"
Then Gabriel did something he'd never done to a human in his life. He let the saw hang, deactivated in his left hand, pulled back his right and slammed it forwards into Alex's face. He was surprised at how much it stung.

I took the full force of the blow, and in my semi-comatose state I lacked the strength to stay standing. I fell to the floor, crying out despite myself, and made no move to get back up again.
"Th-this isn't where I belong." I whimpered, turning my face away from the accusing expressions of my friends, "I'm better off dead."
Looking back, that's not what I really felt. Seeing Mary's death had affected me more than I'd imagined it would, and I didn't want to repeat that experience. I must have thought that, by standing still and not acknowledging anybody else, I wouldn't have to see someone I felt the need to protect fall away from me.
I shuddered, as if I felt the cold, and curled up tight on the floor.

Waiting brings out the worst in everyone. The shaking soldier beside Elise slowly rose to his feet, flinching with each further impact upon the door, and walked towards the front of the vehicle, reaching into his pocket. His friend stood hurredly to his feet, and Elise would have done so as well had she been quicker. But right now she was drained. She was weak and vulnerable. Removing his hand from his pocket, the soldier withdrew a grenade, holding it out in front of him towards Elise and the other man, who quickly stopped and drew his gun. Words were shared, but Elise was deaf to them. Whatever they were, they didn't inspire the soldier with any confidence, as he placed his hand on the pin. Still Elise made no move to stop him, to get out the way. She just sat there.
Any eyes turned on the van from outside would have seen it at that moment lunge up like a beast and, a fraction of a second later, burst into a bright orange flame that engulfed the carpark as the engine detonated. The zombies, their flesh weakened from decay, dissolved in the heat, leaving a sparse few gathered at the door to the shopping centre, still lunging to get inside.
The fires burnt all around, creating an artificial second sunset, whilst the charred husk of an armoured van lay smouldering at the centre. Then, slowly, a silhouette made its way through the blaze, clutching its arm and hobbling. As the smoke was carried away on the breeze, Elise stumbled towards the door, damaged gun arm raising, jacket and trousers in tatters, helmet lost in the fray. Her breathing was heavy, her thoughts jumbled. She didn't know how she had survived, but neither did she care all that much. All she wanted to do was gain revenge on those who had destroyed her world. She fired a single shot, sharp pains firing up her arm as the recoil thrusted into her. She brought down her first target.

“Look, Gabriel, I saw a pile of compressed flour all in their little paper bags over there.” She yelled at him whilst cutting anything in reach, “If you can get them to catch fire it won’t be just a little whoosh of flame, this whole place will explode. If we can get them in here and find some way to get a fuse on the flour, we can escape. If not one of us sacrifices themselves and blows this whole place to hell, undead retards and all.”
The head rolled off another zombie with a fresh burst of blood, she was almost surrounded completely now, there was too many of them for she and Gabriel to hold off for long. “If we can’t find a fuse, I reckon this pillock should do it,” She said aiming a kick in Alex’s direction, “He doesn’t seem inclined to do much else.” Another zombie dropped to the floor, “Oh, and we’re gonna have to set it up soon or else we’ll never get out.”

"There is... one more alternative." Gabriel said breathlessly, hacking another corpse in two with a clean swipe, "We kill every... last... one of them."
With his limbs aching, he brought the saw down on the the head of his next target, splitting it neatly down the middle. He smiled, trying to make the best of the situation, and taking a step back to catch his breath. He turned his head towards Alex, still keeping one eye on the advancing crowd. Perhaps it was just wishful thinking, but he thought he could see the end of them, and beyond that fire.
"You know that's not true," he said quietly, pleadingly, then with a chuckle, "Have you tried picturing the faces of people you hate on top of theirs? Old enemies, teachers, that sort of thing?" He took a breath, then started again, seriously, "Surely there's something out there, someone still alive. Don't you want to find them?"

"There was someone," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper, "but she died right in front of me. What's the use of finding someone if you can't help them?"
I looked up into Gabriel's eyes, feeling like a child trying to explain my logic to a grownup who I knew full well was right.
"I don't have anyone else, save you guys. And we're all going to die right here, aren't we?" I smiled, no longer caring how it looked or what the future held, up at the zombie army. Then it sank suddenly, and my eyes widened, as I caught a glimpse, not far off, of a uniformed figure walking slowly towards the opposite end of the zombies, gun held high. Something in their eyes...
"I-it can't be..." I stammered, the colour returning to my eyes in one quick flash, "Elise... Elise!" I cried out, taking a step foward, eyes on my sister, who I hadn't seen in... oh, how long? It, like many many things, didn't matter to me.

Elise suddenly stopped walking, and her once firm arms wavered slightly. She knew that voice... it was so familiar...
"Alex?" she whispered, taking a step backwards in disbelief, then louder, "Alex is that you?"
Her call was cut off, however, as a zombie reached her position, grabbing the pistol in its hands and leering towards her, its skin discoloured from premature decay. Elise screamed, her legs shaking with fear, suddenly painfully aware of the injuries all across her body. She lunged out with her fist, catching the zombie right on the nose and forcing it back a couple of steps. It was immediately flanked by two more of the ever-decreasing hordes, now little more than a squad, and started towards her again. In an attempt to retreat, Elise tripped over her own feet, falling hard upon the ground, able to do little more than stare as her enemies lurched towards her.
