Hojo probably made it permanant to keep Vincent from being able to be gentle with a person he cared about... It'd make it hard for him to ever have another relationship.

Some one told me he lost his arm during some wierd shooting incident or something, and had a sinthetic/robotic/metalic(...whatever...) one put in...But hell like I'd know if that's the truth of it all *shruggs*

Hi...my theory is this...
Since Hojo operated on him about the same time that they injected Jenova cells into his wife (which was how Sephiroth was born...so technically Jenove isn't his mother..but anyway)
Vincent's wife died in child birth...and Vinent wanted revenge..i guess for 3 reasons...
1) His wife's death
2) Hojo operating upon him
3) and Sephiroth kind of being his son
due to Hojos operation..which gave him his transformation powers....Vincent learned that he can no longer age and or die..(well i bet he could if the planet exploded..or somthing along those lines...)
so Vincent left Shinra (Turks)
and went to the basement of Shinra's Mansion (where by my guess the following happend....)
1)his wife being injected with Jenova cells
2) his operation
3)Sephiroth being born and...i want to say...raised here in a tube then moved to the reactor in the back for a breif time period
4) Cloud and Zack..something happend here..(im iffy..but im debating where Cloud and Zack are actually clones or not of Sephirtoh and where born here....but i haven't figured this out yet...)
5)Sephiroth lost his mind....
6)Sephiroth burns down Nieblemham (i misspelled it i know)
other stuff happends...
7)cloud finds vincent in the basement..in a coffin..alive...(if the door was locked and you needed a key..i don't think vincent could get out either...
so Vincent was in there for a very long time.....and things about his general features must have changed after the operation like his hand..so he wears a gauntlet over it....
ever notice when he transforms it goes away...i think that hand is what makes his body transform..but thats my own opinion....
if anyof this info makes no sense at all....
then the sources i got it from were wrong...
and if its right....i did good remembering it....
just don't yell at me...my feelings are easily hurt
