wow... i've wanted to make my own oboe reeds, though i haven't any time (maybe during the summer hopefully). but yeah, i usually buy my reeds on amazon.com...
has any1 ever played on a flavored reed??? My BD told me that they were bad for my sax but I'm still interested. The only flavores i know about are spearmint and cinnimon. well, my friend (plays sax) has a bubblegum-flavored thingy that you can dip your reeds into and she says that it tastes great, but i don't think it hurts the instrument

THANK GOD for this thread! This is my first year playing alto sax, and I play on Rico Royal 2 1/2's.
Before reading this, I thought all reeds were the same. (I could tell the difference between single and double reeds. I wasn't that stupid.)
I certainly was wrong about that, wasn't I? xp

I will probably be learning how to make my own oboe reeds this summer. At the moment, I just buy them from my private lesson teacher.

D: oboe reeds are a pain -dies- -.- i hate making them but they sound SOOO much better than any one you can buy.... clarinet reeds are easier -nods- and no if you get the professional stuff for your reeds it won't hurt my friend has spearmint stuff that flavors your reeds and is supposed to be good for your instrument (how??? idk....)

Reeds are life. <3 I remember one time we were marching in a square in the band hall and the person behind me was to close and the person in front of me was too close, and we were all backwards marching so as you can probably guess we crashed and fell. Dx I kid you not when I say the first thought that ran through my head was, 'OH s**t, MY REED!' I managed to stab my friend in the neck as I was going down, and checked my reed before I checked on her. XD

I got braces today...
but I played my saxophone anyway. <3 My BD was like, "...Woah...are you crazy or something?" Surprisingly, it didn't hurt (I didn't have any pain meds either until like, an hour ago.).

The only good type of ricos are Hemkes (silver box...purple patterens with hemke written in cursive) Use those, or some form of Vandoran (I recomend V-16s) There is an amazing difference between these reeds and Ricos.

[sins.are.tragedies] My band director gives me my reeds for free, and if I somehow get the money for private lessons, I'll be making my own someday. I use Emerald oboe reeds. i wish i could get reeds for free he charges me 2.50 a reed..it sucks..
