As Shinta meditated, Cole appeared by the lake and gently walked over to Shinta. Instead of disturbing him with words, Cole merely sat next to the swords man and gazed at the lake. Cole could feek Shinta's emotions and decided not to read his thoughts to determine what was wrong, either way, Cole had a good idea what was bothering Shinta...

Shinta clenched his hands into fists as he tried to meditate--too many memories assailed him. He sensed Cole approach with an understanding aura and sit beside him on the grass. After trying a few more moments to calm down, Shinta finally gave up with a low growl.
He looked over at Cole with a smile and troubled eyes. "Hello my friend. It has been a while since we spoke like this."

Cole looked over at Shinta with compassion and understanding in his eyes. If anyone within the pagoda knew what Shinta was going through, it was Cole...
"You know something Shinta, it hurts to see you smile like that when I can sense something is bothering you within... tell me, what is troubling you so?"

"It is difficult to be so small and mortal. To see so much injustice and be able to do so little about it. These past few days have resurrected many old memories for this lowly one, memories this one had thought were laid to rest." He sensed Tochi approach and lifted his head to look at the former Shadow clan ninja. "Good afternoon Tochi-san."

He sensed Tochi approach and lifted his head to look at the former Shadow clan ninja. "Good afternoon Tochi-san." Cole's eyes looked over the lake as he listened to Shinta speak... there was a lot of truth in his words, yet Shinta seemed not to realize something... "Shinta... just because you are mortal does not mean you can do only a little to right injustices... yes there is a limit to what you can do but you can not let that thought bring you down. I'm going to let you in on something... even though I am Immortal, and even though I am able to do many things with the powers I have... I would give them all up to have mortality... I too am limited as to how much I am able to right the injustices of this world... no one has the power to help everyone. So we must try and help as many as we can... even if we feel it is never enough."

Shinta nodded. "This lowly one understands some of what you say Cole-san, but that does not stop the frustration at being unable to help those in need. This one will continue to try to do what little is possible. Alas...only the Maker Of All Things is without limits."
The swordsman sighed and gestured at their surroundings. "If you do not mind saying, may this one ask why it is that you desire to be mortal, when your powers allow you to help so many more people then this one and without risking death?"

Making her way across the grass, dew wetting the bottom of her boots, she came across the lake and stopped a moment...staring at it. Her blood red eyes seemed as if they were peering deep into the dark waters, staring down into the depths at the sandy floor...as if some precious treasure lay forgotton there. But she was merely reminiscing about days gone by, and though she did indeed feel that light touch of sorrow, she couldn't help but let a slight smile curl her thin lips.

Tochi stood beside Shinta. He bowed and spoke softly. "I have to go now. the recent arival of these ninja are proof that I cannot run away from my past. I must go now and challenge my father."

With a sigh, Cole turned his gaze up to the heavens before he answered Shinta's question... "I wish for mortality because with mortality, I can be granted the one thing that has been denied to me by my birth right... you are correct when you say with my powers I can help so many more without risking death... however... death is the one thing I can not protect anyone from... the grim reaper has come for many people I have cared about over the years... yet never for me... he denies me passage across the river. I am to forever walk this world watching those I care about grow old and die. Many people look on me as if I were a monster because I never age or die... with this 'power' I have comes a steep price... and that price is to watch all around me wither away and perish... I wish for mortality so that I may rest, but I can not have mortality because many look to me for strength and so I must push past the pain and continue on... whether I wish to or not..."When Cole finished, he fell silent, merely staring up into the sky...

Shinta silently looked over at the kindly smiling figure of Natsuko beside him. He knew he would one day die and then they would be together again. Her presence and that promise of reuniting with her is what gave him hope to go on each day.
He looked back at Cole and bowed his head in profound understanding. "Forgive me Cole-dono, for my lack of foresight in asking such an obvious question."
"Odd that after so many battles and having faced so many dangers, it is only now that this lowly one realizes that death, or at least mortality, is a gift. It took meeting someone like Cole..."
A sudden wave of sympathy washed over him.
Feeling it best to change the subject, Shinta asked politely, "May this one ask, what can be done to help Tochi-san? This one fears another tragedy will result should he face his father alone."

Cole turned his gaze to the pagoda gates and sighed as he thought of Tochi going into battle only...
"I believe Tochi will be alright Shinta. He is as strong at heart as he is strong with his blades. Tragedy follows all of us Shinta, it is just a matter of when he will strike out at you and how you choose to deal with it. Tochi with be fine and I am certain he will return to us once he has completed his task."
Looking back at Shinta, Cole noticed something he did not see before. The aura around Shinta was mixed with something else, as is someone was sitting beside him. Looking next to Shinta, Cole noticed a spirit of a woman that Cole assumed was very important to Shinta...
"She means a great deal to you, do she not Shinta?"

He probed with energy to find the problem. He sighed, it was only dreamrose. He reached in his pocket and withdrew a small bottle and sprinkled the contents onto the blanked, giving it a powerful aroma. That should wake him up

As Shinta said this he saw Natsuko smile and draw closer to him.
