Calamity-Rato
>_< shriners what is that? and as for the injury I haven't heard of it either, so I'm slightly curious.

Shriners Hospital is an international group that helps children ages 17 on down who have physical disabilities or suffer trauma from burns. I'm 17 this year so this is the last time i can get help from them. But by the time your 17, you should be able to take care of yourself, even if you're disabled. Then again, it depends on how you're disabled.

Iconised Ghost
i doubt its only england

A note about that: Most countries nowadays are more accepting of such deformities/disabilities/watever. Though you may still face ridicule from other people, and we all know thats true in my case.

Everyone will face ridicule if they have a deformity. I am in my twenties, and still face ridicule for my bad leg, because my right knee can barely bend from stiffness during the winter, and I must walk with a cane, unless I feel confidently balanced without it. I still love the looks of shock when I walk into class and manage to perform just as well or better than the others of my rank, because of the work I put into being able to do it. I wouldn't give up martial arts if my life depended on it. I love it too much.

Yeah, its kinda funny how some people like me are better than many of our peers in martial arts.

it is funny isn't it?

everyone seems to expect you to do worse, and it shocks them beyond all belief when we do just as well or better than those of equal rank.

Yeah. An example is that one time I missed the classes for about 2 weeks. I still practiced all the forms, kicks, grappling, etc. etc. When I finally returned, it was obvious that almost none of the lower belts practiced at all since I was last there.

A note to Shyrendora: no one is ignoring you, we just haven't really acknowledged your presence, i guess. Actually, I don't know why...

Jae, I'm just interested in what style you practice while lacking an arm? I practice a battle-field martail art in all three disciplines of sword, staff (and specialty weapons), and hand to hand; but its all about form and longevity, I've tried TKD and it was not pretty.

Having a disability and doing martial arts is no different than anybody doing martial arts. You just have to find the right art for you.

Jae you say you only have one arm? Or half of one? I'd say that'd hold you back a lot less than say being morbidly obese or having no coordination.
I knew this kid that had no arms at all, just two tiny residual stumps. He did karate and was as hard as nails. Kicked like a mule.
I knew another guy that was wheelchair bound, who also did karate. His upper body strength and technique were unbelieveable, the things that guy could to with nunchaku was crazy...

Tat and cynical - Play nice please

I am fortunate enough to not be disabled myself, but a person at the place I go to is blind in one eye, and it makes depth perception very difficult. I often feel bad, as he ends up being a lot tougher in sparring than he realizes because he can't tell how close and hard he hits them. He certainly is amazing at what he does, though.

While not blind, I have really bad vision, even with contacts, which often makes sparring a bit difficult, as my eyes can't always see what is coming at me, and I don't have full peripheral vision. sweatdrop

Answer to Herr Grimm: I'm in TKD. I kno that it is essentially an all leg martial art, but I'm also learning grappling for when my legs wouldn't help, like when someone is way to close for kicking except kneeing.

Answer to DarklingGlory: I have half an arm; missing the part right below the elbow. That's cool about the kid with no arms. Heck I kno a kid who has no legs and half arms who wrestles. He went to regionals and got third place. Everyone has nicknamed him 'Stubs.' I also have nunchaku, but I'm not very good at them lol. I've also learned a few staff forms.

Have you tried grappling? What martial art are you in? If you've read earlier, another person asked for some suggestions for their blind friend on what to do. Like I told them, keep up a solid guard of your face and grab them when they hit you, if you have the endurance for that. Since its only sparring and i don't kno what art you're in, thats about all i can say for now.

I do Tae Kwon Do, and I've always wanted to try grappling, but unfortunately don't have anybody to teach me. Thanks for the tips, though! ^^
