Tiana's face fell. "My parents...they died when I was little. T-Rexaur, I think. They were from Timber...they didn't know the area that well yet. Garden took me in." Then she gave him a hesitant look and sighed. "Well, since you were there when it happened...I guess it's okay. You remember that soldier, Kalo?"

Rifkin placed a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. "That's too bad, Tiana. I'm sure they were wonderful parents, to raise you as they did." He nodded. "Aye, I remember Kalo. I still have his helmet in my room from that day.."

She nodded and continued, placing a hand in Shadowchaser's fur. "Well, he's come around a couple times...not to Garden though. He's changed somehow, grown more powerful. He's a mage now, I think...and for some reason he's thankful to me for the power he's gained." She shook her head. "I don't understand his explanation myself...but he threatened those I knew if I reported him. So you see..." She trailed off and stared at the horizon.

Rifkin watched a boat sail off in the distance. "Very strange...a mage now?.And he was here..in Balamb..and he talked to you? All so strange.." He said quietly. "I was under the impression he had died." Rifkin shrugged. "A powerful mage...he must be schemeing something up."

Tiana nodded quietly. "That's...what I'm afraid of. But...how can I say anything? He's threatened to harm anyone close to me if he's found out..." She looked at him, fear in her eyes.

"Hmn...you could call his bluff?..But that could prove deadly...I suppose in telling me you already have though." He laughed and skipped a pebble across the ocean surface. "So I guess only time will tell?"

Tiana shrugged. "I think...he meant if the headmaster found out. Yet, he mentioned something about a festival in Esthar...and suggested I tell the headmaster about that. So...I'm confused."

"Hmn. Well..." Rifkin started, "He didn't mention anyone getting hurt...if you didn't mention the festival, did he? It seems he has a personal agenda that I don't understand either..." He shrugged, looking at her.

Tiana shivered and pulled her knees up to her chest, hugging herself even though the day was fairly warm. "I don't know..." she said quietly. "I just don't know."

"It's funny...I've been coming down here quite often, but haven't seen him once." He said, frowning. "I worry about home whenever I hear about the Sorceress moving her pawns around...she seems to have a strong hold on Fisherman's Horizon..my father has been unable to get a job.." He stopped. "..Kalo probably comes from a city that most benefits from the Sorceress...like Esthar."

Rifkin nodded. "Yeah....hn..I have to go. I promised to make a delivery while I was in the area, and I wont break my word on this. Hopefully we can speak more of this another time." he said, standing on the dock. He breathed in the sea air one last time before running off onto the solid land.

Rifkin ran straight past Kalo without a glance, as he stepped onto the dock. After a few seconds he laughed lightly. "I thought he would never leave.." Davrick said, a raven perched on his shoulder.

Shadowchaser snarled at Kalo as Tiana jumped to her feet and whirled to face him. Eyeing Kalo suspiciously, she gestured to Shadow to stay where she was. The wolf subsided, but continued glaring at this strange human. "What...what brings you here now?" Tiana asked, trying to sound diffident.
