Utakan Kira the wanderer Utakan People act like Webber's musical is the very foundation of phandom. neutral What about the Yestin/Kopit Musical? Or even Ken Hill's, which came before Webber's and was his inspiration? I suppose those weren't as well done. I never saw them myself, but they couldn't have caught on as well if they weren't as good. Just a penny for your thought. Or maybe his own fame. Actually Ken Hill's was very successful, but it never spanned to America like Webber's did. Hill's success is what got Webber to do his own. As for the Yeston/Kopit, it's more obscure here since, again, it didn't go past Europe as Webber's did. The only reason Webber's musical is more spread-over is because he had several successful musicals under his belt beforehand and was praised for Cats that was made only a few years prior to PotO. I wish I could see it then. I believe that is why Webber's was so successful as well, from his history.

Ken Hill and Y/K both played in America. 3nodding Y/K was an American production and Hill's Phantom is actually the highest grossing show ever to play Off-Broadway. Other than that though, Uta's right; Webber's Phantom got such a big release because he was already a hugely famous composer when he wrote it. Though... it pains me to say it, but after having seen Ken Hill I think ALW actually IS better. The Hill show is more sophisticated, but it kills the fun of the original story by making Erik a straight-up unsympathetic villain.
So I suppose in some ways ALW's show is the foundation of phandom... there were no crazy rabid phangirls or spades of different fan-novels before then, certainly, even though the story had existed for 70+ years. Still, that doesn't give him the right to act like he created all things Phantomy. (In fact, it occured to me last night that he didn't even create most of the plot twists he claims he added to the story. DJT is in Leroux, of course, Raoul has Christine perform the Phantom's music to lure him out into the open in the 1943 movie, and the Ken Hill show has a Mme. Giry-ish character (Erik's sister) lead Raoul to the lair instead of the Persian.)

This is why I love Fox, he corrects everything I say that's wrong. XD
Webber's famous for taking ideas from other things and people and twisting them to his own uses. The man's just getting sloppy these days, methinks.

Wow. I've never read Phantom of Manhattan, but from the second post it sounds pretty bad. A Phantom sequel would be very interesting, though.

Many phans, myself included, perceive it as a total waste of paper and time. Forsyth does seem to neglect anything but Webber, which is total idiocy all things considered.

I don't know if this is either good news or bad news to some people (but certainly good news to me) The production of the sequal is taking longer to make due to a certain accident with ALW's cat, Otto. Link to the article about the accident. Go Otto! It must be Erik, possessing the body of Otto!

I actually read something about cats being able to tell a proper music note from one that is flat/sharp. Which, in the end, says that cats know good music from bad.
THAT PROVES IT. rofl Ok, I'm being mean now.
